I'm headed up for business at Fort Belvoir, VA for the next few weeks and was hoping someone could recommend some courses in the area. Has anyone played the course on base and if so, is it worth looking into? I have the afternoons after 2:00 and it looks like my weekends will be free, so I have plenty of time. I'm looking at anything worth playing, not just the most expensive. I can play a good track that may not be in the best of shape without any regrets as well as something more upscale.

Thanks

Play the Medal of Honor Course at Quantico. You'll be about 15 minutes away from Woodbridge. Last year it wasn't in too good of shape, but it is a challenge for sure.

The Gunston course at Belvior is a nice one. Not much water on it, but it will eat your lunch and take your girl if you think it's a pushover.

There are a couple decent courses down towards Fredericksburg, VA. Check out Cannon Ridge and Augustine.

Been many years since I played at Belvoir. Flew out to meet my wife's dad when I popped the question. He told me to bring my sticks and we went and played at the base while I was there. Best I can remember it was a nice little track. Thing I remember the most was that the greens felt like you were walking on a sponge. I have lived in Texas all my life and you may as well putt on the parking lots around here in August. Wife's dad still lives in Woodbridge, I will have her get some recommendations from him and post them later.

There are two courses on base at Ft. Belvoir. Both courses are in OK shape shape and it's convenient if you're on base.

Laurel Hills in Lorton is very close by. Opened last October and is still growing in, but definitely worth playing. Canon Ridge is further away but another course worth playing if you have the time.

Why don't you try Old Hickory. It's not too far from Lake Ridge and just of the PWCP. Westfields, in Clifton, isn't that far away either. Just a straight shot up the PWCP until you reach 28. If the price tags scare you, try Forest Greens in Triangle. It is a nice layout with decent conditions at a reasonable price. Good Luck.

The base courses in the area are pretty good, along with Quantico and Belvoir, the Army-Navy Fairfax course is not bad (27 holes). In and around Woodbridge, Old Hickory is very nice, just a lot of homes right on the course. Westfields is over near Centerville, good track. Out towards Gainesville-Haymarket (about 30-45 minutes away), try Stonewall or Bull Run. Both are very nice. Of course, if you're people who know people, try to find a member at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club who'll take you out and have the time of your life!

Check out Laurel Hill. Brand new course that opened up that I heard was a pretty good track...

If you don't mind a 1/2 drive, you could play Reditions Golf Course (compilation of famous holes from around the world)

http://www.renditionsgolf.com/renditions.a...d=153&page=2373

Some other tracks on the MD side...

Glenn Dale Golf Course (www.glenndalegolfclub.com)
Enterprise Golf Course (www.pgparks.com/places/sportsfac/golf.html)

Also check out the Golf course at Andrews AFB (if you have a military ID)

I will be Woodbridge visiting my wife's family and wish to squeze in 2 or three rounds of golf. From research, this is the list I compiled:

Old Hickory
General's Ridge
Bull Run Golf Club
The Gauntlet
Cannon Ridge
Laurel Hill
Augustine
Renditions

Has anyone played these courses? What are the conditions of courses in this area during the summer months?

Any info would be helpful.

Thanks.

I can comment on Cannon Ridge, Gauntlet and Augustine as they are in my hometown and I've played each quite a few times. Cannon and Augustine are going to be in the best shape as per past experience, although I havnt been home to play this year yet so I dont know currents. All are good tracks that have their challenges, I enjoy the Gauntlet probably the most but that may be because I have played there so often. Each has a similar feel as the design goes, with Cannon I believe being a little more linksy on some of the holes. Both Augustine and Gauntlet are tight with many woods areas so take some extra balls if you arent relatively consistent driver of the ball. Gauntlet will have the easiest greens l feel but all arent too difficult. All in all they each are fun to play and will pose a challenge for a good golfer but still be fun to get around for a little less skilled player. Have a good trip, lots to see and do around the DC area, thats why I love calling it home. biggrin.gif

If you can play only 3 courses -

1. Laurel Hills
2. Cannon Ridge
3. Old Hickory

All are in excellent condition.

Asloper,

I am curious why you list The Gaunlet and Generals Ridge as don't play and Bull Run as a Maybe? Is it the layout, conditions, or poor service?

Thanks in advance,

Toe

I agree with 1t2golf. Old Hickory and Laurel Hills are 2 of the better courses in the area and very close by to Woodbridge. I've heard great things about Cannon Ridge. Stonewall and Westfields are great courses as well but green fees are near the $100 range.
