Knox shoots 59 at the Albertson’s Boise Open

Published

on

Russell Knox carded a 12-under 59 today at the Web.com Tour’s Albertsons Boise Open presented by Kraft. He’s the current leader at 14-under, 1 shot ahead of Hunter Hass.

Knox’s round marks the fifth ever 59 recorded in the history of the Web.com Tour, and the second of 2013 — Will Wilcox shot a final-round 59 at the Utah Championship on July 14.

To shoot 59, Knox needed to sink a 7-foor par putt on the final hole of regulation to break the 60 barrier (you can watch the video below).

Prior to this year, the previous three 59s came by the hands of Jason Gore (2005 – Cox Classic), Doug Dunakey (1998 – Miami Valley Open), and Notah Begay III (1998 – Dominion Open).

The 28 year-old Knox started his day at Hillcrest Country Club with a birdie on the No. 10 (See the scorecard below). He then recorded four pars and closed his front nine with a birdie-eagle-birdie-par finish. On his back nine, he eagled No. 11 and then followed it up with five consecutive birdies before closing with two pars. The 59 for Knox breaks the previous course record of 61.

Knox, originally from Inverness, Scotland, went to Jacksonville University and turned pro in 2007. The strengths of his game relate to driving accuracy, which has also translated into a high greens-in-regulation percentage.

The 2013 season marks a different year for Knox as he is now splitting his time between the PGA Tour and Web.com Tour after spending the majority of last season as a PGA Tour player.

He has made seven cuts on the PGA Tour (10 starts) this year, where he finished T17 last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Knox is currently 169th in the FedExCup race with earnings of $259,473 (Knox finished last season 179th on the list).

On the Web.com Tour, Knox has made six cuts out of eight starts and has placed in the top-15 four times. Knox current stands 71st on the Web.com Tour money list with a total earnings of $50,536 from his eight starts – Daniel Chopra is currently in 25th position, the cut off to earn a place on the PGA Tour for 2014, with earnings of $103,360 so far this year.

After the round today, Knox has a one shot lead over a group of three and will start the weekend looking for his first top-10 of the season.

Will Peppler is a former member of the University of Manitoba golf team. Currently he is a graduate student studying kinesiology and neuroscience. In his spare time Will enjoys running, cycling, and of course golf.
