Three in a row, that’s what Lorena Ochoa accomplished at the Safeway Classic in Portland, Oregon. This win came by five strokes, giving every indication that her past difficulties with closing tournaments is just that, past. Ochoa shot a 71 in the final round for a 12-under 204 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club and her [...]

Steve Stricker used seven birdies to vault past K.J. Choi and into the 54 hole lead at The Barclays on Saturday. Mr. Choi’s mundane 70 allowed ten players to creep within five shots of the lead. Hunter Mahan tied his second tournament record in five weeks with nine birdies, all from 12 feet or less, in a round of 62 to put himself into a tie with Rich Beem for third. Another shot back are Geoff Ogilvy, Rory Sabbatini, and Woody Austin, whose name has become a fixture on leaderboards of late. Steve Flesch, Kenny Perry, and Ernie Els stand another shot back heading into today’s final round.
Rory Sabbatini leads The Barclays through one round of play. He is trailed by Rich Beem and K.J. Choi by just one shot.

Lorena Ochoa won the Canadian Open by three shots over Paula Creamer with a final round 69. For Ochoa it was her second national title in a row following her British Open win two weeks ago at St. Andrews, and fifth win overall. Ms. Creamer shot a final round 68 but two short par putt misses cost her an opportunity to put any kind of pressure on Ms. Ochoa down the stretch. Watching the back nine on Sunday proved to me once again why Ms. Ochoa is the number one player in the world as she continually hit fairways and crisp irons, often inside of her playing partner Ms. Creamer.
So what is it about a professional golfer that you notice first? Is it their smooth swings that launch the ball effortlessly down the centre of the fairway? Is it the phenomenal clubhead speed they generate when they do decide to hit the ball hard, leaving less a divot as a scorch mark? Is it [...]
