Nike Covert FAQ’s with Sara Brown

Published

on

Nike Golf’s new line of VR_S Covert drivers and fairway woods have been the most talked about new offering from the company in its history. But for many golfers, the differences between the company’s “Performance” and “Tour” models have been confusing.

Why is Rory McIlroy playing a Covert Tour driver, when Kyle Stanley and Nick Watney are playing the Performance model? And why do McIlroy and Tiger Woods play Performance models in their fairway woods?

GolfWRX On-Course Reporter Sara Brown talked to Rob Burbick, who fits Nike Golf athletes every week on the PGA Tour for new equipment, about some of our viewers most frequently asked questions.

I looked at the video, and went to the Nike site to check specs (shaft SW etc). NO specs on this particular driver.

Two weeks ago I was in oregegon and walked into a Nike Outlet first, then the “Nike Store” in Portland looking for a golf hat, maybe a shirt. Both times I was told “no golf stuff in the store”.

What the heck is Nike doing about marketing golf besides spending many millions on ads and sponsorships???

Yeah. You’re right. I live in the PDX area. And no Nike golf stuff in their store. Only at golf shops and online. Or, if you can score a pass to the employee store. Although, there are a ton of serious golfers in this area, Nike really caters to the runner. (Typical PacNW folks). Us golfer in the NW could care less about running.

That’s gotta be the least amount of bs I heard about new clubs. No 10 yards here, 17 yards there. Just play what fits them better. All about finding the best shaft head combo.

That explanation by the Nike rep. was the biggest bunch of B.S. I have ever heard about equipment. That is not the reason that any of their tour players play one head over another.

Oh, well thank you for that. I was about to swallow his evil lies hook, line and sinker. Phew!
Please enlighten us. What is the REAL reason Tour players use one head over another?

its not bs at all, you obviously arent that knowledgeable about equipment. I’m a 5 hcap and when I don’t play many oem clubs because they don’t give me the option of hand picking specs while many other componente vendors do. Average joe goes to a golf store and buys a driver that is stamped with whatever loft they need and thats it. Reality is head stamped 9.5 may be 9.5 or it may be 12.5. the face may sit closed or it may sit open. Experienced players know what they like visually as well as what works technically and get heads hand picked accordingly

Zozo Championship Tour Truck Report: Phil’s new driver and 2-wood, Tiger testing a new 3-wood

Published

on

Slower week than most at Sherwood but still a couple of nuggets—and who doesn’t love a Tiger/Phil equipment update?

Callaway

Phil Mickelson: After his (two drivers in the bag) win on the PGA Tour Champions, Lefty went full gearhead and continued to test not only the new Apex MB ’21 irons (6-PW) but also put a 47.5-inch Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero in the bag. The (low-lofted) 9-degree head, set now at 8 degrees (swing weight at D7) will be equipped with either a Project X HZURDUS Smoke Green 60 6.5 or a KBS TD 60G C5 TX.

In addition, Phil is bringing back the 2-wood having put a 43.5-inch, 12.5-degree “old school” X Hot 3 Deep. The idea with both is distance gain (non-shocker) for example on Tour there are a number of bunkers, forced carries at the 300+ clip and to be able to fly by those on command is a huge advantage. Dispersion will suffer a bit in this scenario, but that’s what the 2-wood is for. The new driver set up got Phil about 8 mph of additional ball speed and on avg a 310 carry. The 2 wood is to fill the larger gap created by the driver—this new fairway metal gives Phil about 280-285 carry.

Ping

Tony Finau: Ping G425 LST (9 @7.5 Big-) with Diamana D+ 70TX tipped 1.5

Andrew Landry: Ping G425 LST (9 @8.75, flat) with Fujikura Ventus Blue 6X (46 Inches)

Joaquin Niemann: New Ping G425 7-wood (20.5 @20) in the bag with Graphite Design Tour AD DI 8X (20.5, 40.5 inches).

Titleist

Slow week, no major updates to report beyond Aaron Dill making 9,000 wedges for the players in early Augusta prep…

TaylorMade

Tiger Woods is testing a SIM Ti 3-wood with a Mitsubishi Chemical Diamana D+ 70 TX shaft. The 15-degree 3-wood is set at 14.25 and is on the upright setting. (42.5, D4, Golf Pride BCT 58R). Won’t know if it goes in play until tomorrow tee off…
