WOTW: Justin Thomas’ Rolex Sea-Dweller from the FedEx St. Jude Invitational

Published

on

Justin Thomas worked his way up from being five strokes down on the start of Sunday to win the FedEx St. Jude Invitational. His final-round 65 was more than enough as he won by three strokes and he notched third win of the modified season. After the win, JT held that WGC trophy up with a big smile on his face and a Rolex Sea-Dweller in stainless steel on his wrist.

JT was wearing the same Sea-Dweller that he has worn a few times in previous wins. He wore this same watch back in January when he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in a playoff with Patrick Reed and Xander Schauffele.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller is the big brother to Rolex’s most recognizable dive watch, the Submariner. Sea-Dwellers are extremely rugged and capable dive watches that were first introduced in 1967. Those first Sea-Dwellers where also the first dive watches available to the public with a helium escape valve. Since then the Sea-Dweller has gone through a few versions with updates to its water resistance rating as well as mechanical movement. The Sea-Dweller is water-resistant to 1,220m (4,000ft), making it more than capable for any dive that a human could put it through. The Helium Escape Valve allows high-pressure gases to escape, saving the movement, when diving to extreme depths.

The Sea-Dweller’s main protection from extreme water pressure is its 904L Oystersteel case. Rolex’s Oystersteel is their own stainless steel alloy that resists corrosion better than traditional stainless steel. The case is 43mm, about 3mm larger than the Submariner, and contains Rolex’s 3235 self-winding, automatic movement. The 3235 contains 31 jewels and offers an impressive 70 hours of power reserve. All Rolex movements are COSC certified for precision and Rolex actually demands that its movements are twice that accurate.

After certification, Rolex tests the accuracy on their own high-end equipment to ensure that precision even after casing. Covering the 3235 is a black dial with larger hands and hour markers filled with Rolex’s Chromalight for easy reading in dark conditions. Rolex’s Chromalight is said to last up to 8 hours, twice as long as standard luminescent, and glows a distinct blue color.

The Sea-Dweller dial features the date at 3 o’clock and there is a cyclops lens above it to magnify the numbers for easy reading. The Oyster bracelet holding this timepiece to your wrist is made from solid links of matching 904L Oystersteel and features a Fliplock extension link to easily fit over a wetsuit. Rolex’s Glidelock system is also included so you are able to adjust the band without tools a few millimeters for that perfect fit.

Congrats to JT on his third win of the season, current No.1 ranking on the FedEx Cup points list, and No. 1 ranking in the world. He is such a fun player to watch and a fan favorite. I hope he has a great finish to the year and we can maybe see something new on his wrist!

JT, I suggest an Everose “Rootbeer” GMT-Master II, if you happen to read this…

WOTW: Bryson DeChambeau’s Rolex Sky-Dweller From The U.S. Open Championship

Published

on

I don’t know how to say it, but Bryson might have put on one of the best performances we have ever seen at a US Open. He dominated a brutal Winged Foot golf course that was meant to humble the best players in the world. He was the only player to finish under par and when he hoisted that silver trophy in the air, on his wrist was his trusty Rolex Sky-Dweller!

WOTW Specs

Watch: Rolex Sky-Dweller
Reference: 326934-0003
Year: 2017 – Current
Limited: No
Case: 904L Oystersteel
Bezel: White Gold Fluted (Ring Command)
Dial: Blue
Size: 42mm
Movement: Calibre 9001, 40 Jewels
Power Reserve: 72 hours
Glass: Sapphire Crystal
Water Resistance: 100 Meters
Bracelet: 904L Oystersteel
Price: $14,800

The Rolex Sky-Dweller was introduced in 2012 just as Bryson was graduating high school. He was a long way from being the latest U.S. Open Champion, but the Sky-Dweller has been his go-to watch every week. The Sky-Dweller is one of Rolex’s most complicated watches. It features a Ring Command bezel, made from white gold, that works with the mechanical movement to display the month, date, and second time zone.

It is a pretty rare thing to have a bezel that works directly with a movement, but the Rolex 9001 does just that. The 9001 is a self-winding automatic movement that contains 40 jewels and offers 72 hours of power reserve. The 9001 was fully developed and built in house by Rolex for the Sky-Dweller. Like all Rolex movements, the 9001 is a certified Swiss Chronometer to ensure that it is extremely accurate through all conditions. Sky-Dwellers have 42mm cases made from 904L Oystersteel and contain a screw-down caseback and crown to give them a 100-meter water resistance rating.

Under the scratch-proof sapphire crystal is a beautifully finished blue dial with an off-center ring to keep track of the 2nd time zone. The day of the month is shown at 3 o’clock like most watches, but the month is marked in a contrasting rectangle above the hour markers on the face. This way you don’t have to reset the date for months that are 28 or 30 days. The date system only requires 1 adjustment a year on the 1st of March. Hour markers are done in white gold and are filled with Chromalight, a long-lasting luminescent material. The bracelet on the Sky-Dweller is made from flat links of matching 904L Oystersteel. The outer links are done in a brushed finish while the center is polished to a mirror-like shine. The Oysterclasp contains Rolex’s own Easylink adjustment system that allows you to adjust the band 5mm for the perfect fit.

This was such an amazing U.S. Open to witness and one that I think will be talked about for a long time. Bryson has said he has worked his whole life for this moment and it is great to see his hard work pay off. Maybe Bryson can take a little of those winnings and purchase one of the new 2020 Sky-Dwellers. I suggest the Everose Gold with Chocolate dial and Oysterflex strap!

WOTW: Dustin Johnson’s Hublot Big Bang – Mystery Watch SOLVED!

Published

on

Dustin Johnson once again proved that he is playing some of the best golf in the world right now. He won the Tour Championship, and FedEx Cup, by 3 strokes over Xander Schauffele. As you would expect, DJ had a huge smile on his face and his trusty Hublot Big Bang Chronograph “Beverly Hills” limited edition on his wrist. Yes, I finally know exactly what is on DJ’s wrist!

WOTW Specs

Watch: Hublot Big Bang Chronograph “Beverly Hills”
Reference: 301.KX.1779.LR.BHB17
Limited: Yes, 25 Pieces
Date: 2017
Case: Tungsten
Bezel: Tungsten
Dial: Blue Carbon Fiber
Size: 44mm
Movement: HUB4100
Power Reserve: 42 Hours
Glass: Anti-reflective Saphire Crystal
Water Resistance: 100 Meters
Bracelet: Black Alligator and Blue Rubber
Price: ???

I feel like I have been searching for this watch for WAY too long, but now the search is over. I was fortunate enough to get a reply from DJ’s manager who put me in touch with a person that gave me all the details!

Say hello to DJ’s Hublot Big Bang Chronograph “Beverly Hills” Special Edition! Only 25 pieces were made for the entire world in 2017 and even Google can only find a few Japanese websites that list it.

The “Beverly Hills” is a 44mm Big Bang Chronograph with the top and bottom pieces of the case being made from Tungsten, with a satin finish. Sandwiched between the 2 Tungsten case parts is a blue composite resin containing the blue rubber and stainless steel crown and pushers. The bezel is also satin Tungsten with a bezel lug done in the same blue composite resin as the middle case.

This case back is made from titanium and features the Special Edition engravings as well as a sapphire crystal window. The crystal also has “90210 B.H.” painted on the inside to pay homage to the Beverly Hills zip code. Each of the 25 units made has XX/25 engraved to prove that this is a very limited edition.

The Tungsten bezel is of course held down with 6 of the legendary Hublot H screws. If you have read my previous WOTW articles on this watch, you know that dial has been my biggest adversary. Well, the dial is crafted from Blue Carbon Fiber, as I had previously thought, with Rhodium plated sub-dials. The date window is at 4:30 and has white numerals on a black background.

The Big Bang’s hands and hour markers are done in a matching Rhodium that is satin finished. The minute and hour hands, along with the hour markers, are filled with a white luminescent for easy reading in low light.

Internally the “Beverly Hills” uses Hublot’s HUB4100 self-winding automatic movement to keep precise time. The HUB4100 is made from 252 components, including 27 jewels, and offers the lucky 25 owners 42 hours of power reserve.

The strap on the “Beverly Hills” is unique as well, being made from black alligator leather, blue rubber, and containing matching black stitching. The back of the straps has “BEVERLY HILLS” engraved and filled with grey lacquer that matches the stainless steel deployant buckle clasp.

The only spec I don’t know is the price, but I saw an old listing on a Japanese website for 998,000 Yen ($9,416) but I have to think these would go for substantially more now.

Dustin made his road to winning his first FedEx Cup look so easy—much easier than finding his exact watch reference. What a way to end a strange 2019-2020 PGA Tour season, which was more exciting than any of us could have hoped. I know we will see more of DJ—and his Big Bang “Beverly Hills”—holding up trophies next year! I hope he puts some of that $15 million into some more limited edition watches for us to find!

WOTW: Jon Rahm’s Rolex Sky-Dweller in Stainless Steel

Published

on

Jon Rahm won the BMW Championship in an exciting fashion! After watching last week’s WOTW featured player, Dustin Johnson, sink a VERY tricky downhill putt to force a playoff, Rahm made a 66-foot putt on the first playoff hole to win! With a huge smile on his face, he held the brushed silver BMW Championship trophy in the air with his trusty Rolex Sky-Dweller on his wrist.

WOTW specs

Watch: Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
Reference: 326934-0003
Limited: No
Case: Oystersteel 904L Stainless Steel
Bezel: White Gold Fluted Ring Command
Size: 42mm
Movement: Rolex 9001, 40 Jewels
Power Reserve: 72 hours
Glass: Saphire Crystal (Cyclops lens over date)
Water Resistance: 100 Meters
Bracelet: Oystersteel 904L Stainless Steel Oyster
Price: $14,800

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is a watch aimed at travelers. It was introduced in 2012. The Sky-Dweller stands out from other watches with its iconic dual time zone display. This off-center disk rotates to show the home time zone in a 24hr format while the hands show the current time zone. The Sky-Dweller also offers a unique integrated calendar. The day of the month is shown at 3 o’clock like most watches, but the month is marked in a contrasting rectangle above the numerals on the face. This way you don’t have to reset the date for months that are 28 or 30 days. The date system only requires one adjustment a year on the first of March. The date functions on the Sky-Dweller are very simple to adjust, just rotating the fluted Ring Command bezel allows the date, local time, or reference time to be changed.

To handle all the time zones and dates, Rolex created the 9001 movement with 40 jewels and extra gears for those functions. The 9001 is a COSC certified movement with a 72-hour power reserve and is one of the more complicated movements Rolex has created.

Rahm’s model has the blue dial that is protected by a Sapphire Crystal that is extremely scratch resistant. That crystal also has a cyclops lens over the date that magnifies those numbers, making them easier to read. The Sky-Dweller case and bracelet are made from Rolex’s Oystersteel, a 904L stainless steel that offers superior corrosion resistance. Oystersteel is harder to machine but offers a much more durable and consistent polish compared to other stainless steels. The Sky-Dweller is water-resistant to 100 meters and offered in Stainless Steel, Yellow Gold, and Everose Gold.

The end of this shortened PGA Tour season has been nothing short of exciting. Some great golf by the best players in the game is everything we want come playoff time. Congratulations to Jon on his big win, lets hope he can help make next week’s Tour Championship just as fun to watch!
