The Match Pt. 3 – The perfect candidates to pair up with Tiger and Phil

Published

on

@championstour

After Sunday’s hugely successful The Match: Champions for Charity, golf fans are already demanding for the third instalment to complete the Tiger Woods vs Phil Mickelson trilogy.

Whether it’s athletes from other sports, current LPGA stars or celebrities, there’s been plenty of names touted to pair up with Tiger and Phil, and here’s a rundown of some of the biggest contenders to tee it up for The Match Pt. 3.

Sporting Greats

Michael Jordan

A sporting superstar, an avid golfer and a high roller gambler – the world would tune in for MJ. If The Match 3 wants to go in the same direction as the second instalment then landing MJ would be a massive coup, and during an interview with Dan Patrick this week, Phil said he wants him involved.

  • Handicap: 1.9

Steph Curry

One of the biggest NBA players in the game, serial golfer and a man who has done some incredible things for the game of golf to help the sport grow. Curry has already teed it up on the formerly known Web.com Tour, and he has the game to hold his own in this contest.

  • Handicap: 0.1

Tony Romo

The former Cowboys QB loves his golf and provided plenty of highlights when he teed it up last year at the PGA Tour’s Safeway Open. Romo has a natural flair for the mic, and he’s already shown he’s not afraid to mix it with the pros.

  • Handicap: +0.3

LPGA Stars

Lexi Thompson

I’d love to see more mixed events, and if The Match 3 is to involve LPGA players, then Lexi Thompson has to be involved. Arguably the most recognizable face on the LPGA Tour, Thompson would be a great addition with her power game, blessed with the ability to hit both bombs and hellacious seeds – the perfect fit for the event.

Danielle Kang

The World Number 5 in the world, and Danielle Kang’s star is on the rise. Not only can she play, but she’s not afraid to talk the talk too. She may not have “made the Europeans cry” as she hoped at the 2019 Solheim Cup, but that likely wouldn’t hold her back from trash-talking either Tiger or Phil.

Nelly Korda

The 21-year-old may not have a major to her name just yet, but her number 2 ranking shows she’s close to breaking through. America’s highest-ranked player and one of the longest hitters on the LPGA Tour.

Celebrities

Larry David

As comics go, Larry David is difficult not to love. He may not be the best golfer in the world, but the humor he would bring to the event would more than compensate for any suspect shots.

  • Handicap: 15

Bill Murray

A golf icon in his own right, Bill Murray is seen annually entertaining the crowds at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and his golf game is very solid too. He’d be a popular choice, and there’s no chance the occasion would get the better of him.

  • Handicap: 7.2

Ray Romano

Just like Murray, Ray Romano loves his golf and is seen annually at Pebble Beach during the Tour’s Pro-Am. His game may not hold up as well as Murray, but his entertainment value would more than make up for that.

  • Handicap: 17

WRXers, who do you want to see tee it up with Tiger and Phil for ‘The Match Pt. 3’?

there are many good potential partners for Tiger & Phil, but I’d like to see mixed twosomes next. I go with Lexi & Nelly. They bring lots of GAME, and even more APPEAL (though I’m not sure Nelly knows that yet!)

I don’t see any reason why the match or whatever the next one of these is called need to be limited to 1 foursome. Tiger Phil Romo and Curry would be my pick for their foursome. For the second foursome, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth (since Rickie already got a shot), Lexi and Danielle Kang would be very entertaining.

I like the idea of LPGA players but only a few have that long drive that is important to bring in TV viewers…my self I would just love to watch Inbee Park play 18 holes every shot. Her swing is the most amazing in golf and no one putts better. We tried on the range to copy her driver swing and “How does she hit it 250”

Phil paired with Kyle Berkshire. Tiger paired with Jamie Sadlowski. That would be the Full Send Battle of the Bombers. I love the LPGA but they have a severe marketing problem. They have no star power other than Lexi. They have great players but lack of charisma.

    Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player

I like the idea of two LPGA PROS paired with two celebs.
    Possible parings
    CARTS OTHERS DRIVERS
First six holes carts vs carts
    Second six holes opposites partners
    THIRD six holes drivers partners
    HENCE THE NAME COD
YOU WILL HAVE 3 SIX HOLE MATCHES

John Smoltz – he’s a great player and he’s very comfortable with a mic since he works in a booth these days.

I’d love to see MJ, Curry or Romo. Personally I’d really like to see some LPGA members. The LPGA would have been impacted by this downturn significantly more than the PGA tour and it would be nice to see the Ladies some notoriety and hopefully bring a little more interest and support to their games.

How about Jack Nicholson? He’s a golfer, an interesting character and has a membership at the Los Angeles country Club.

Consider this a vote for “not Bill Murray”

Whoever the choose, I hope they remember that PERSONALITY rules the day. Rory tried to engage his crew in some banter, but all of them opted out, and that became a snoozefest. Peyton and Tom actually bring something to the table. I think Romo and Curry would be great, and they wouldn’t need different tees or strokes. Obviously MJ would be a great get, but we’d quickly realize he’s not a 1.9 handicap. As for LPGA players, Kang would be ideal. I’m trying to think of another player with a big personality, but I’m struggling.

Is Vince Gill still around? He is/was a scratch golfer. Clint Eastwood maybe isn’t a great golfer but enjoys golf and is decent and would be a lot of fun. And Darius Rucker! As a fan, I agree seeing some LPGA players would be most enjoyable. Just sayin …

I like the idea of having some of the LPGA players in there. Maybe throw in an amateur from the NFL NBA MLB and NHL to add some spice to it. We know the NFL has great players but the other big sports have some real good ones to. Joe Pavalski from the San Jose Sharks is a great player we all know that Steph Curry always shoots for three and a few of the MLB players can post some good scores. I think it would be cool to have all of them in one tournament and see what happens. Maybe one PGA player one LPGA play and two amateurs in a foursome.

Tiger Woods reveals his at home putting practice routine

Published

on

In Episode 8 of GolfTV’s and Golf Digest’s mini-series “At home with Tiger Woods”, the 15-time major champion explained his primary putting practice routines when at home in South Florida.

Explaining to GolfTV’s Henni Koyack, Woods revealed how he consistently focuses on his putting from 6 feet and in before going straight into a heavy workload of lag putting.

“I end up doing a few sets of chalk lines from probably about 6 feet and in. I work on my start line (and) I try and get that dialed in. And then I really don’t spend a whole lot of time in the 8-15 foot range.

Once I get a lot of my dialed-in time on my putting, then I’ll lag putt a lot and start trying to get my feel in my fingers and how I like to release the putter and feel it in my stroke. I like to do designated tee drill, line drill and then lag putt to death.”

Woods also explained to viewers that he likes to keep his home green running at a “baseline” of 13 on the stimpmeter, which he finds easiest to then make adjustments from at tournament events.

“So, here I like to keep the greens running about 13. And then we go to certain tournaments, and they’re faster. Ok, I make the adjustments. At certain tournaments, they’re slower. But, I use a baseline right around 13.

At golf courses, the greens have gotten so much faster over the years. Like the standard, it used to be like 10. Maybe 10.5 was a really fast green. But now, some greens are getting up to 14 or so. So, I like to keep mine on the faster side.”
