The keys to success at Seminole c/o amateur great George “Buddy” Marucci
Sunday, the golfing world will have its eyes on the TaylorMade #DrivingRelief skins match. The Rory/DJ vs. Rickie/Wolff battle royale is enough to make anyone watch, but to take it even further, they are playing it on one of the country’s most respected courses, Seminole Golf Club. No one knows this place as well as former Walker Cup Captain and Seminole member George “Buddy” Marucci.
I had a chance to pick his brain on best practices to succeed at Seminole and this is what he had to say.
JW: If you could identify the keys to playing Seminole well, what would they be?
BM: The positioning is very important….not only off the tee, bust especially on the greens….very difficult from above the hole. You must hit the ball in the proper areas at Seminole.
JW: Can you identify any potential momentum holes that need to be played well to win?
BM: Depends on the weather. If there is wind, the par-3 holes will be very difficult…in addition, pay attention to holes 4 and 6 as they will be key on the front side.
JW: What are the birdie holes out there? and what are the “just make a par” holes?
BM: “Birdie holes”: 1, 3, 9, 10, 14, 16. “Par is a good score”: 4, 8, 13, 17, 18.
JW: What do players need to understand about the green complexes? Grain, slope etc.
BM: Like most Ross designs staying under the hole is essential. In regards to around the greens, if you are short-sided in any of the bunkers it’s extremely difficult.
JW: As far as these guys hit, where does length really give you an advantage? I understand length always helps, but where would someone like Rory create opportunities for himself by blasting it out there.
BM: With some of the newer championship teeing areas, the length is a big advantage, but all of these players hit it a good distance so hitting it far but in the right spots will be the key.
I also spoke with a friend who has played there a number of times and he said 17 and 18 are two holes that could play a serious factor in the match.
Source: At 175 yards, the par-3 17th may seem like a simple hole, but a precise tee shot to the right part of the green is essential to not only making birdie but ensuring a non-dramatic par. Hitting into any of the bunkers around that hole depending on the wind could be disastrous and in some cases, you could be hitting your third shot from off the green if you are not paying attention.
The 417-yard 18th, once again, seems like a chip and a putt to these players but paying attention to wind direction could create some very important decisions on the tee shot. It’s not simply the yardage and lies that you need to address, the angle you want into the green may be the biggest decision you make.
I have heard the “good player” insider tip to playing Seminole is if you are going to miss it anywhere, make sure the next shot is going back into the wind.

Bomb it 350, hit iron 240. Chip to 7 feet and drop the putt. Seemed like they would post some decent scores.
