Not enough shoulder turn will prevent a proper weight shift and loading of momentum for the downswing and too much will throw the whole swing off of center and cause unnecessary strain in the transition! Shawn has been writing for numerous publications since 2001 including Golf Tips Magazine and Score Golf Magazine. He also appeared of the Golf Channel’s Academy Live in July 2001 with Jerry Foltz and Mike Ritz. Shawn Clement has the distinction of being one of the only professionals fit by Ping’s Tour fitting centre where he was fitted with left and right handed clubs including 2 drivers with 115 plus miles per hour and 300 plus yard drives from both sides.

    Shawn is conflating two things: the height and width of the arms — which is his real focus — and the actual turning of the shoulders, which he really doesn’t pay attention to. Every swing shown has each player’s shoulders turning at least 90 degrees, even if the club isn’t getting to parallel at the top of the swing.

    The overall advice seems sound. However, it would be a lot clearer if he wasn’t calling swing width the “shoulder turn.”

      I would say he is conflating shoulder turn and the turning of the torso.

      Is he really turning the shoulders all that much? In relation to the hips, he’s turning much less than others. Look at the hips. The butt cheeks are basically facing the target, which I have not seen to that extent in other swings. Also his left shoulder is very high at the top of the back swing. I think his swing may be easier on the body though.
