Paige Spiranac blasts golf culture: “A big boys club” that is “elitist, stuffy and exclusive”

Published

on

@_paige.renee

Women’s golfer and social media personality Paige Spiranac has lashed out at the culture in golf, calling the sport “elitist”, “stuffy,” and “exclusive” – reasons why she feels she has never been welcomed into the game.

The 26-year-old who broke onto the scene as a college prodigy was speaking on her podcast Playing-A-Round, where she criticized the dress code of golf which she claims is hypocritical and the culture of the sport which she calls a “big boys club”.

“They call it a gentleman’s game but those guys definitely don’t act like gentlemen a lot of the time. There’s just so much hypocrisy in golf, and it’s so frustrating for me.

It’s this big boys club where if someone does something they’ll cover that up…but I wear a tank top, and I’m the s–t, and I’m the w—e, and I’m the one that’s ruining the game.”

Spiranac, who boasts over 2 million followers on her Twitter page, also revealed on the podcast that she was once rejected from helping a charity because of her cleavage.

“I wanted to help this charity out, and I wanted to give them free golf clubs. The guy wrote back and said, ‘We would love to but, because of the way our board members view you, you can’t help out’. I want to give back to these kids who don’t have anything, because I grew up not having anything, and I can’t even f—ing do that because of my cleavage.”

The 26-year-old who enjoyed a brief stint on Tour believes problems with inclusivity is one of the significant issues facing the sport, and how the game creates boundaries that don’t need to be there – chiefly in the fussiness over what you can and can’t wear on the course.

“We bond over having a common interest, and we all love the same thing … I don’t understand why it matters if you’re wearing a polo (shirt) and I’m not wearing a polo.

If a guy on tour wears shorts instead of pants, the world’s not going to end. In golf, people make all of these problems so serious, and it’s not serious.”

You can subscribe to Spiranac’s ‘Playing-A-Round’ podcast here.

Last time I checked, most golf clubs do not allow tank tops when golfing. I was always raised and taught to wear a collared shirt when stepping on the course. I guess these millennials think they can do what they want and make their own rules. Fall in and follow suit….if you’re going to dress like you’re going to the night club, you probably will get treated that way. If a woman has a new body, people can see that, and there is no need to show it off.

This is a 21st Century version of the “buttondown bastion” reaction of country club golf to the social upheaval of the 1960s.

The “uber tightness” emerged in the wake of the Civil Rights movement and protests against the Vietnam war and the riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Many country clubs in the 1970s saw themselves as the last outposts of civilization. No moustaches – and heaven forbid – beards. When Craig Stadler – the Walrus – showed up at PGA tournaments wearing a formidable moustache, country clubbers feared that the USA might take its last tumble into oblivion.

Other crises emerged in the late 1990s, such as club wives pressing to get tee times other than before noon on Wednesdays, or being allowed to eat in the main club room. Ugly lawsuits emerged over this. The lawsuits both cracked the “proper” facade of country clubs and cost them big money in legal fees and settlements.

Back to the pros, LPGA don’t make nearly as much as PGA players. The winner of a Symetra Tour tournament (LPGA developmental) gets maybe $30,000, which is what some guy that barely made the cut at the Honda Classic gets for teeing off a 7:45 AM Sunday morning. Maybe female pros get fewer free clothers than the males????

My take on the root cause: It’s very much a generational thing. Both tournament organizers and college professors get a little concerned to what young women wear to events, be it a 9 AM tee time of a 1 PM English lecture.

That said, Paige’s counterattack leaves herself open to continuing criticism from the “stuffy” set, and praise from the upstart set. At least she won’t be forgotten.

Also, she could be attempting to “catch the wave” following Rory MacIlroy’s slam of Muirfield golf club as “stuffy”, and one other young male player (can’t find recent story) who said golf was unwelcoming.

And Paige will maintain celebrity among those who think golf is stuff, and young women who detest their older male bosses. (Sometimes with good cause!)

Oh, well, I have some simulator time in an hour. So, I will now focus on what I CAN control in golfdom.

    Dave Chappelle nailed it.

“The girl says “Oh uh-uh, wait a minute! Wait a minute! Just because I’m dressed this way does not make me a whore!” Which is true, Gentlemen, that is true. Just because they dress a certain way doesn’t mean they are a certain way. Don’t even forget it. But ladies, you must understand that is fucking confusing. It just is. Now that would be like me, Dave Chappelle, the comedian, walking down the street in a cop uniform. Somebody might run up on me saying, “Oh, thank God. Officer, help us! Come on. They’re over here. Help us!” “Oh-hoh! Just because I’m dressed this way does not make me a police officer!” See what I mean? All right, ladies, fine. You are not a whore. But you are wearing a whore’s uniform….”

Paige, you are wearing a whore’s uniform, so don’t get pissed off when certain groups don’t want to be associated with that. You make plenty of money selling your “assets”, so collect your checks and move on.

“…old heads preaching old head sh*t.”

Man, this guy sounds like a moron. How does any of this have to do with insecurity? I think this has to do with the fact Paige is unaware of how she makes the majority of her money. Here’s a quick hint:

“In 2015, a Total Frat Move[10] article encouraging people to check Spiranac out online, resulted in her Instagram following jumping from under 10,000 to over 100,000 in just two days.

This explosion in social media led her to being invited to play in the Omega Dubai Ladies Classic in 2015. She missed the cut, but the online attention resulted in many sponsors and endorsement deals, making her a professional golfer. Her 2016 golfing season saw her play on the Cactus Tour, finishing the season with $8,010 in winnings and another invitation to Dubai.”

In other words partner, she’s relevant and known for having great boobs and a nice body. And she likes to play golf.

So, she shouldn’t be surprised if organizations don’t want or need to associate with her. It’s a free country dude and she’s certainly made PLENTY of money using her “talents” as it is.

This guy needs to get Paige’s rack out his head.

The point is that she needs a reality check. She’s making a ton of money by selling her sexuality, but doesn’t want to be thought of in this way? What?

It’s like Chappelle said, “The girl says “Oh uh-uh, wait a minute! Wait a minute! Just because I’m dressed this way does not make me a whore!” Which is true, Gentlemen, that is true. Just because they dress a certain way doesn’t mean they are a certain way. Don’t even forget it. But ladies, you must understand that is f*****g confusing. It just is. Must agree with a few of the posts here.

She is using the stuffy male culture to her advantage, and for income. To hear her complain about it seems nothing but odd. Using her platform to whinge about how everyone looks at her seems stupid given she is paid for having people look at her, literally.

Do I wish it were less stuffy? Yes. Is she the absolute worst person to be delivering this specific message? Yes.

I didn’t resent Laura Baugh. I didn’t resent Anna Kournikova. But this is just stupid. She trades on her looks (real and enhanced), then blasts the people who are the source of income for that trade.

She’s won one bush-league (Cactus League, actually) tournament and hasn’t played professional golf in 4 years. So let’s not kid ourselves regarding what she’s selling.

She’s irrelevant. She played Junior golf in Colorado after a failed gymnastic career. She was mediocre at best. Her mother was a “always there” golf mom who was typically coaching her between holes. Her college career was fair and her pro career absent. The fact that she is still present in the golf industry is the mere fact that guys are idiots and she has a rack. How is her opinion relevant??? Why are we still forced to hear her rants? Boobs are everywhere. Hers are no different, she just chooses to push them in our face as a career.

    Comment section is pure gold.

My issue with Paige is how she has shed tears on camera, and been very open about her younger days being “bullied” over her breasts, yet she exploits her body image more than anyone I know of. She just strikes me as one of those self-entitled wannabe Instagram “influencers” and complains about the attention she attracts but knows DAMN WELL that she does it on purpose. It’s a feminist mentality or something I couldn’t tell you. All I know is she is just as shallow as the people she is criticizing, just in her own way. Id respect her far more as a content creator if she focused on herself and approaching problems better. Wish her the best in her business opportunities nonetheless.

She’s a snowflake hippocrit is all I see…..if she were ugly she’d be working in a pro shop selling sweaters….she should be thanking all the shallow make golfers out there who click on her videos to check out the Hooters girl who can hit a golf ball.

Then leave the fucking game, Paige. She makes a living off of beta farming and Instagram likes. She’s pushing the conformist ideology because shes a woman. Golf has been a boys club since its inception. Deal with it. Not everything requires “”diversity.””

This comments section is a clear example of why the US needs a far, far better educational system.

The comments are mostly cognitively dissonant, and the spelling and grammar would be laughable in most countries at a 3rd grade level.

No wonder T won. His support system is right here, ridiculing a woman for expressing an opinion. Well done!

    • BurrB

      Mar 9, 2020 at 2:18 pm

It really is comical. Nobody can address the issue she’s talking about, so they just go on calling her whatever makes themselves feel better & superior. You’re right, I don’t know how any of it can be taken seriously with the level of education on display. Truth is she’d wipe the floor with most of the people commenting too.

        Mar 10, 2020 at 1:00 am

You’d lose that bet – I’m neither a citizen of another country, nor a trailer dweller.

I am a person who understands that you can criticize your country without “hating” it. At least, theoretically you are allowed to do so in a republic like the US.

Some folks will say it’s “unpatriotic” to criticize the country. Then they talk trash about “the gub-mint” and anyone on Penn Ave not pale enough for them. And the 50% of the population they don’t agree with.

It is a shallow world we live in. Knowing you may have/possess certain physical qualities and beauty, then exploiting it all for fame and money has its negatives. Certain women who do such, have any air about them.

      Mar 9, 2020 at 7:19 pm

Why do we have to get politcal I come here to get away from politics.

      • Moosejaw McWilligher

        Mar 10, 2020 at 12:55 am

Typical cop-out. It’s not “politics”, it’s values, and it’s life. The fact that things like *education* and *gender equality* have been politicized exemplify how the values of the world have gone so far astray.

The fact that more people have clicked “shank” here than any other article I’ve seen prove it. A male-dominated forum goes out of it’s way to show their disapproval of a woman. Just because she plays the game – pun intended – doesn’t mean she has to like it.

        • Jbone

          Mar 10, 2020 at 2:17 am

You made it about politics by bringing up our president. What a reach this is to try to turn her criticism as an indictment on society when in reality it is the opposite. Her “profession” in unhealthy for women and catnip for the lowest common denominator of men

  55. Mike Honcho

    Mar 9, 2020 at 1:11 pm

timeline of events. Losing relevancy, ex releases topless photo. She gets sports illustrated body issue for taking back her body. Which she then portrays pretty much as soft core porn. Loses more relevancy, calls out men and elitist. This is literally nothing more than an attempt at staying relevant. Sadly, she is not and in 2 months when a certain major rolls around she will be even less relevant. I would suggest she works harder at golf and tries to be Relevant on a tour, any tour, rather than make her relevancy about being naked and calling out men.

  56. Michaele11111

    Mar 9, 2020 at 12:58 pm

Big boobs on display, constant sexual innuendo and a lack of professional grade talent and it is everyone else’s fault she has not been successful.

There must not be a market for what she is selling. If there were, she would be successful.

McDonalds is hiring and I don’t think they are “elitist, stuffy and exclusive”.

    • El Burro Kuchar

Agreed. She has large breasts and does not hide them. Therefore, anything she has to say is irrelevant.

She is absolutely correct, even if she does exploit her looks for her own benefit. That’s is being a smart entrepreneur and I don’t hold that against her, not even a tiny bit. She can also put together coherent sentences better than anyone in this comment section.

Tend to agree, Tom S. It’s clear that few are willing to hand this woman a free pass, so she markets what she has; clearly with a certain amount of success.
As do innumerable others in any number of commercial arenas. To attack Paige for this is the height of moral hypocrisy, and may also be an indication of just how intimidated some men are by a woman’s success (or unavailability).

      Mar 9, 2020 at 5:51 pm

Except she has made a bunch of money being a golf personality. So yes that is a job title. Why would she work if she is making money doing to do that.

  59. Sir Chunksalot

    Mar 9, 2020 at 12:24 pm

It’s pretty simple Paige – if you purposely choose to sexualize your media image to make money (and you without doubt do exactly that), then you don’t get to be all pissy about men objectifying you. Oh and if you chose to play somewhere other than Troon North and similar elite clubs, you might see that the majority of golfers are very far from elitist and stuffy.

  60. JD

    Mar 9, 2020 at 12:16 pm

She’s not wrong. Just the wrong person to deliver this message. This argument held much more weight coming from Koepka. I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to play at many different country clubs as someone in my 30’s, but honestly enjoy golf much more at better kept public or municipal courses. CC rounds take on average an hour longer, and I hate having to pay to watch some stuffy old fart boot a Pro-V1 around for 20min a hole.

    Mar 9, 2020 at 11:31 am

Wait…you’re telling me that marketing yourself based on your body can have negative consequences? So…some people may not want to be associated with that image? Mind blowing stuff!

Next thing you’ll see is a “professional” dancer complaining that corporations are elitist because they have a dress code which won’t let them wear the typical dancer “business” attire to their 8-5 job.

  66. DocMojo

    Mar 9, 2020 at 11:21 am

Sounds like being an IG queen isn’t paying the bills the way she would like.

“The game” is stuffy and elitist? Didn’t she get an exemption into an LPGA event a few years ago? She’s gotten plenty of opportunities through her looks and clothes that other women wouldn’t get. Couldn’t make enough birdies when it counted though. One Cactus Tour win, congrats.

She’s making a living by wearing clothes that 99% of other women would feel uncomfortable or embarrassed to wear. I’ve never understood how her IG feed is supposed to be “empowering” for other women or whatever. She makes a huge deal about how she was bullied as a kid and her feed is supposed to inspire other women … all she’s doing is body shaming every normal looking woman out there. Making them feel like this is how they should look on the golf course when that’s impossible. Even for her — nobody plays golf in full hair and makeup.

My goodness is she hot though.

  67. Alan

    Mar 9, 2020 at 11:19 am

She uses her body as a lure, posting nothing but golf shots in skimpy outfits and teasing and she has the nerve to call the game and her lowbrow audience sexist? Good grief! If you didn’t sell yourself as a slut, you would not be treated as such… The only reason you have achieved anything in this game is because you sold your soul. Get real.

  68. Mac O’Gradu

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:52 am

Paige’s lack of self awareness is incredible. She’s won what? One Cactus Tour event? What’s her educational background? “Instagram 101”? This chick needs to realize what assets have made her money, keep her mouth shut, and collect her checks until father time takes a toll on her looks.

  69. Niels

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:50 am

So many comments about her looks, her ability, and her persona. It says a lot that if all people have in defense of what she had to say is nothing related to what she’s saying. I personally don’t like the dress codes and the ‘tradition’. I never understood what difference it makes to someone else what shirt I wear. And I do agree, it keeps people from trying out golf and grow the game.

  70. Anthony Kim

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:46 am

Paige’s lack of self-awareness is incredible. She’s made an entire career out of wearing skimpy outfits and showing T&A. She’s won what? A cactus tour event? She’s not an ambassador for the game either; she’s merely a product of the “Instagram Influencer” culture we’ve all grown tired of. This chick needs to stop reading her own press clippings and realize what she actually brings to the table.

  71. Robert Allenbee

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:38 am

Oh Paige, Imagine if you were ugly, life would really be hard

  72. Bob Jones

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:34 am

This never seemed to be a problem for Natalie Gulbis, whom I never saw wearing tops that showed cleavage. Gulbis was a much better golfer, too.

  73. N

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:28 am

The problem with her trying to gain credibility is that she constantly contradicts herself i n either what she says or what she does.

Talks about wanting to be taken seriously for her playing ability, yet in her 1st podcast she mentions that she’d tried to get her amateur status back to play in the pebble beach pro am (presumably to film for social media).

Then there are the serious social media posts (golf tips, travel, anti cyber bullying campaigns etc) which are then broken up by the occasional swing vid where she struts up to the ball in an revealing outfit, poses, then smirks into the camera (these are pointless).

Its almost as if either she or whoever manages her, isn’t really sure which route her ‘career’ should go.

  74. Pierre

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:21 am

She should make everybody happy and just switch to beach volleyball.

  75. Gary

This video keeps covering up my screen. What’s going on?

  76. Brandon

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:15 am

She can come Play-A-Round with me anytime. I am by no means an elitist. I barely have standards.

  77. GMatt

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:15 am

It’s all about her, nothing more nothing less….. If she truly wanted to help out the charity, why didn’t she still give the “golf clubs” to them without recognition? It’s about the act of charity, not the recognition she wants for giving it.

  78. Jack Nash

    Mar 9, 2020 at 10:11 am

At least hot babes that can’t golf can pose for bikinis pics on Instagram and be an “influencer”. Unfortunately ones like this lose all credibility once they open their yapper.

  79. Gunter Eisenberg

  82. Brittle Grips

    Mar 9, 2020 at 9:55 am

I support the notion that golf is elitist and full of assholes. The problem with her argument is that without the overriding identity of respectability in golf, her brand is no longer unique. If golf were to achieve the freedom she’s talking about, she’d be a dime a dozen, and largely irrelevant. Be happy you’ve succeeded in your niche, Paige. Women who use their talent with clubs get the microphone when talking to golf & society, not you.

  83. Grayson

    Mar 9, 2020 at 9:53 am

Golf is about having some class, which she has none.

  84. Funkaholic

This is from someone who garners attention any way she can except with her clubs.

  86. greg

    Mar 9, 2020 at 9:36 am

Does anyone else see the hypocrisy here? On the one hand, Paige has made her reputation (and presumably a decent income) on her willingness to flaunt her body in attire which maximizes her “attributes.” Good for her. That said, she doesn’t also get to complain because some folks aren’t fans of women who have chosen to draw attention to themselves by objectifying those attributes. She made a choice- it’s not golf’s issue that some people do not agree with that choice.

  87. Chris Walton

    Mar 9, 2020 at 9:34 am

  89. Paige Sucks

This chick is irrelevant to golf. Failed player who found out she could get more attention in a bikini than on the golf course. It’s obvious why no one takes her seriously.

Charles Barkley reveals his solution to ensure golf’s successful fan-less return

Published

on

@justinriley7

Fresh from his entertaining role in the booth for Sunday’s The Match: Champions for Charity, basketball legend Charles Barkley appeared on the “Dan Patrick Show” on Tuesday where he discussed his primary idea to help tour golf make a triumphant return next month.

Just like at Medalist on Sunday, Barkley revealed that mic’d up players and allowing members of the broadcast to have on-course interaction with them is key to keeping viewers entertained during the sport’s spectator-less return.

“If you’re not going to have fans, you can’t just have guys playing golf and announcers talking. If they’re going to be successful and have great ratings – number one, they’re going to have great ratings because we need golf, we need sports – I think they should consider mic’ing the players.”

5-time major champion and golf analyst Nick Faldo is already onboard with Barkley’s idea, tweeting that he feels that tour pros wouldn’t object to it either before adding “this could be huge”.

“I think more players will do this, and if they are happy with we analysts talking direct to them, this could be huge!”

Would you like to see players mic’d up and interacting with members of the broadcast during live tournament play, WRXers?

The DailyWRX: What’s buzzing on social media (5/26/2020)

Published

on

I hope everyone had a safe Memorial Day weekend—but we back to work and the golf season is in full blossom.

Here is what was a buzzin’ on the interweb.

Hmm…

I wonder who from the top sheet is a legitimate stick. My money is on Steph. I’ve seen him up close and the guy can get it around—meaning the guy can hit it all over the place and still shoot in the low 70s. That’s the mark of a player.

Thank you…

I get to work a dream job because you all fight to keep us safe. We are nothing without you.

If you were placing bets before the tee shots…

No one, I mean no one, bets on TW having the worst shot. Odds are 6.5 billion to 1.

The equation of comfy…

Torn ground + favorite t-shirt = kitty fur…I get it. I’m in. Where do I pay?

Public service announcement…

He split his pants. It’s Tom Brady. No amount of memes, Twitter posts, or IG things will make it anything. I was hoping the world would let that one go due to its LOWWWWWWWWW hanging fruit appeal. I mean I’m writing a “do not post”…post on it, What a world.

DM @johnny_wunder with non-Tom Brady tore his pants stuff.
