Augusta National currently monitoring coronavirus outbreak; releases statement; “on schedule” 2020 Masters
On Wednesday, Augusta National released a formal statement in which it announced that they were monitoring the current outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19), but that the 2020 Masters, as well as the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and Drive and Chip and Putt National Finals, are planned to go ahead as scheduled.
In a press release, Augusta National chairman, Fred Ridley stated in-part
“The safety, health and well-being of everyone is our top priority at Augusta National Golf Club. We are, therefore, mindful of the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19, which has been widely reported and continues to spread in areas where it has been detected. Augusta National is not only monitoring the situation closely, but also consulting with relevant experts, including the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Georgia Department of Public Health and local authorities.
As a result of this collaboration, and based upon our knowledge of the situation at this time, we are proceeding as scheduled for the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals and the Masters Tournament. We will continue to review the available facts and information with the experts and authorities, establish precautions and take appropriate action to ensure the safety of all involved.”
Earlier this week, the PGA Tour released an official statement in which the organization said that despite there currently being no planned schedule changes, they will: “regularly review our schedule in light of revised CDC and WHO reports and make any updates as necessary.”
There are reportedly more than 93,000 people who have been diagnosed with the coronavirus. The U.S. currently has 150 confirmed cases, with an 11th person dying from the outbreak on Wednesday.
The 2020 Masters at Augusta National Golf Club takes place next month from April 9 to 12.
