Today from the Forums: “Driving iron for a first-time buyer?”

Published

on

@srixoneurope

Today from the Forums takes us to a conversation on driving irons. WRXer, rockhound100bopd, plays a short home course where he only uses driver off the tee on three or four occasions and is interested in trying a driving iron. Our members have been discussing the strategy in our forums and giving advice on finding the right driving iron for a first-time buyer.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the full discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • thejuice: “If you can, try a Srixon U85 (or U65 if you can find one). It feels REALLY good when struck purely (forged face I believe) and the ball flight is piercing but not low running. I have a 4/23* and it’s my 205-215 club.”
  • hopewell: “My experience is rather limited so take this on face value, but I’ve got a Cobra Utility black w/hzrdus black in the bag and can’t get enough of it. Holding out on a 4i too, but the UK second-hand market hasn’t produced one as of yet! Having hit this back to back with a friend’s p790, I’d take the Cobra all day long. My only gripe with this is my miss on the face is towards the toe, and I lose 20-30 yards with a bad miss. Obviously Indian and not the arrow, but it’s never something I noticed when playing hybrids at that end of the bag. With cobra replacing the Utility this year, potential to grab a bargain and/or get a fit?”
  • j3r1ch0h0l1c: “I have to give a shout out to Srixon on this topic. I bought a U65 off of BST here with the Modus3 120S, and it’s a beast. It actually feels a bit more flush if you hit it higher on the face, but a low strike runs the ball forever.”
  • Boomersooner523: “Sounds like you use the driver about as much as I do so here are my thoughts….. I don’t know if I will ever give up my TM p790 2 iron….It came with the standard HZRDUS shaft, and it was garbage…Switched to a .5 shorter Tour ADI AD-95x. Fairway monster now with the slightly heavier shaft. I also find myself using this club all the time from punch outs of woods to stingers in the fairway or even the high launch drives on par 4’s. If you have the swing speed you should definitely pick one up…2 of the 3 guys in my group bought one after seeing how much I use it when we play. Disclaimer: I have huge hands, so I have a lot of weight in the grips, this is the only club I had to throw some lead tape on to get the swing weight where I wanted it. I say that because this is the only club in my bag that really suffered from the weight distribution on the club.”

    Adams DhY. Got a 21 degree on the bay for under 20 bucks in great condition. I’ve hit it against all the new stuff and nothing is noticeably better. It’s money from 220-230.
