Cam Smith claims his friendship with Patrick Reed is finished as tensions rise at Presidents Cup

Emotions are running high at this week’s Presidents Cup, and Cameron Smith has continued his back and forth with Patrick Reed ahead of the opening day from Royal Melbourne, claiming that their friendship is now a thing of the past.

The Australian accused Reed of cheating at last week’s Hero Challenge, an accusation Reed took umbrage with, who dismissed those claims from the 26-year-old on Monday.

Speaking to the media at this week’s Presidents Cup, Smith described how tensions are reaching boiling point down under after both men’s disagreement on the incident, per the AFP.

“I’m sure he didn’t like it. I think there is a little bit of tension there. I’ve looked at Patrick a couple times but he hasn’t looked back. I’m looking forward to the weekend.”

But don’t expect Smith to make the first move in putting to bed their current quarrel, who added that he wouldn’t be going out of his way to speak to Reed this week, and how their friendship has disintegrated over the dispute which began last weekend.

“I definitely won’t go out of my way. I think our friendship, I guess, is not quite there anymore. I’m here to do a job for Ernie and that’s all I’m focusing on. I think it’s case of team versus team, what’s right and what’s wrong.”

Anyone for a Smith-Reed singles match at this week’s Presidents Cup?

I am sure Patrick lost some sleep.

Cam should really reconsider any friendship with the person who told him he should wear a flat bill.

Based on the hole-by-hole: Patrick Reed 4&3 over Ratface

Lesson: Don’t talk sh*t until after the prize is decided.

Cameron smith is an instigator. He took the situation with Reed and tried to turn it into something to use against the entire US team.
Reminds me of a spoiled snot nosed kid.

Sounds like this wasn’t a friendship, but rather an acquaintance … on both sides … friends would talk about what happened out of the public eye … just another occurrence of social media trash talking gone awry

DJ suffered the ultimate travesty at Whistling Straits when he ground his club in a bunker the size of a thumb, but wasn’t advised of situation until AFTER he holed out on the 72nd green…

Or we could just stick to golf and not turn the incident (which is OVER by the way) into a soap opera.

to even have a course like that is stupid…either make it a bunker or not….if it is not a bunker, you can ground your club. and when you have acres of soft sand like a bunker, how can you ground your club and NOT move sand. dumb design.

      Dec 15, 2019 at 9:48 am

Oh really? I’m sure you are eminently qualified as a course architect and therefore exactly the person to critique Royal Melbourne.

Go back to your muni and quiet down little guy.

The Patrick Reed incident had nothing to do with Royal Melbourne.

    • Rich Douglas

      Dec 15, 2019 at 3:13 pm

      This misses by a mile.

It wasn’t the status of the area of play–whether or not it was a penalty area. The issue is that he improved his lie with his practice swings–something that is not allowed ANYWHERE on the course.

Did you not even review the event?

National Golf Foundation’s nationwide course surveys show human and business impacts Coronavirus has had on golf

National Golf Foundation

The National Golf Foundation has conducted multiple surveys to study both the human and business impacts that the Coronavirus (Covid-19) continues to have on the game of golf.

Amongst their findings, the NGF found that based on phone surveys for over 1,000 golf facilities, 74% of in-season golf courses remain open despite the current Coronavirus pandemic. (As of March 27)

National Golf Foundation

The organization also revealed that there is a temporary golf course closure in the following states – Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusettes, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.

National Golf Foundation

From a golf business standpoint, the NGF asked the ‘Top 100 businesses in golf’ how the ongoing spread of the Coronavirus had affected their business – with 23% saying severely, and 42% saying significantly.

National Golf Foundation

The consumer perspective has also changed dramatically due to the pandemic. The NGF’s findings show that while previously the situation had not had an impact on consumer’s golf equipment purchase decisions, the research now shows that the vast majority are now delaying any golf equipment spending.

Check out all the findings from the NGF’s research here at
