Forum Thread of the Day: “Matt Every suspended for three months after testing positive for cannabis”
Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from nichho and discusses Matt Every’s recent Tour ban after testing positive for the use of cannabis. The PGA Tour announced that Every will be eligible to return on Jan. 7, 2020, while the 35-year-old released a statement voicing his disapproval of the Tour’s current policy.
“I tested positive for cannabis, a drug I do not abuse and a drug that I have a legal prescription for in the state of Florida. I have been prescribed cannabis for a mental health condition by my physician whom has managed my medical for 30 years.
For me, cannabis has proven to be, by far, the safest and most effective treatment.
With that being said, I have no choice but to accept this suspension and move on. I knew what WADA’s policy was and I violated it. I don’t agree with it for many reasons, mainly for my overall well-being, but I’m excited for what lies ahead in my life and career.”
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Matty01984: “I love how Every is banned for it as this time of year. Genuinely seems like they have looked at it and thought, right we need to take a stance on this (even though our stance is going to be ridiculous), let’s ban the guy over this stupid fall period when interest levels are negligible in any event.”
- Chrisosterone: “Regardless of my personal opinion on the subject, marijuana is currently a banned substance. There are myriad other avenues for him to research meds for whatever medical condition he is currently afflicted with a banned substance. Simply find another avenue if you want to play on the PGA Tour. Case closed.”
- Man_O_War: “He’s been an open user for years…guess he was dodging bullets for a while.”

Why Ludvig Aberg is my new favorite player – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing one of the new sensations in the world of golf – Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year-old finished solo second at the Masters a couple of weeks ago, and gained many plaudits, including from several WRXers.
- RELATED: ‘There were a number of red flags’ – Ludvig Aberg reveals why he turned down multiple LIV offers
One member, RoyalMustang, took to the forums to explain why Aberg is now their favorite player, saying:
“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.
Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”
And our members have been reacting and sharing their positive takes on the young Swede.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- redfirebird08: “Ludvig has a great attitude, a great smile, and a great golf swing.”
- otto6457: “I’m very lucky to have talked with Ludde several times at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech. He’s a truly nice guy and very friendly. Always said hello when we passed each other in the club house and was always smiling. Watching him hit balls on the range was a joy. He has “that sound” and trajectory to die for. There were many times he was out on the range in 30+ mph winds just hitting the most beautiful shots that just seemed to ignore the wind. World class ball striker. And yes……..I am a fan boy.”
- konklifer: “I like him. In an era of endless waggles and laboring, his swing and pace of play are a joy to watch.

Whoever thinks cannabis is a performance “enhancing” drug obviously has no experience with it.

Unless they’re considering cannabis a performance enhancing drug, then this is a ridiculous and antiquated policy. Medical marijuana has been a reality for a long time now, and despite a certain push against (funded to some extent by the “socially sanctioned” alcohol industry), it will be legal in more states soon. The fact that it’s still “illegal at federal level” is one excellent example of why U.S. division of state and federal law is moronic.
Why not ban alcohol use and nicotine? Both very harmful drugs!

The USGA/US PGA Tour can pretend to be “growing” the game with Play 9 and NBA-style promo videos, but this a public stance that reaffirms golf’s out-dated and out-of-touch approach to marketing its players. Just like baseball, they’re resisting change at all costs to cling to “tradition” at the cost of ensuring the game’s survival moving forward.
The Euro Tour is double-lapping the US PGA in becoming a 21st century sport.

I agree with your sentiment and while baseball has a long way to go in many aspects of their league. They do not test or punish their major leaguers for street drugs. At all. The PGA tour could learn from them in this regard. I fail to understand how testing for these non-performing enhancing drugs helps the players or the tour itself or more importantly helps any players who possibly have a problem.

Geez, what’s next? Is someone going to suspend someone for 3 years for flipping off a camera man?……
