Golfer sues high profile golf club who revoked his membership for playing too much

Published

on

Sunningdale Golf Club is being sued by a former member who alleges that his membership was revoked because he played too much.

According to the U.K. Times, John Cawood, 72, a retired Australian lawyer, is in the process of suing the club after allegations that he was kicked out for playing more than 30 rounds a year.

The issue stems from Cawood playing as much golf as he has on an overseas membership which costs approximately three times less than the full annual membership fee of around $5,000.

Per the report, the Central London county court heard that Cawood joined the club in 1997 and would stay in the U.K playing golf for three months a year. It is claimed that Cawood also stayed in the U.K for an 11-month period over 2014-15.

Claiming a “stitch-up”, Cawood stated on Wednesday

“The club has a perceived idea that I play regularly over 30 times but it’s not true. The last time I played over 30 rounds was in 2006 and I paid a pro-rata rate per game.”

Cawood’s membership was revoked in 2015 after he had been warned twice that he should become a full paying member.

Sunningdale Golf Club boasts celebrities such as Sean Connery and Hugh Grant as its members, and it costs approximately $77,000 to become a member.
