Forum Thread of the Day: “Was Kuchar’s act at the Porsche European Open in the spirit of the game?”

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from Callyboy and draws attention to an incident from last week’s Porsche European Open involving Matt Kuchar which has caused a stir both on our forums and on social media. The episode which you can watch here, saw Kuchar improving his lie in a waste area by judging that the small particles surrounding his ball were all loose impediments. While Kuchar’s act did not violate the rules, our members are split on whether the action was within the spirit of the game or not.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • OldTomMorris: “I’m sure it was a “Waste Area”. Kuchar has become a target off the back of some things (deservedly so), and while this looks weird, I don’t see a problem with it. Don’t look to Twitter for a fair and balanced reaction.”
  • JohnnyCashForever: “It doesn’t really pass the eyeball test, does it? If Kuch wants to get hyper-technical with the rules and remove very small rocks that are the size of individual grains of sand, then what prevents the rules committee from imposing a penalty on him if he “accidentally” removes actual grains of sand in the process and improves his lie?”
  • bladehunter: “Isn’t it just another glaring hole in the rules? He’s easily within the rules to move them. The Twitter twits responses about a DQ are hilarious. Have to remember. This is in a waste area. NOT in a hazard or whatever they changed the name to.”
  • MaxBuck: “I would interpret what Kuchar did as violating Rule 1 and Rule 8.1. Rule 1 states in part, “You should normally play the course as you find it and play your ball as it lies.” Kuchar violated both the spirit and the letter of that rule IMO. I’ve lately gone from being a big Kuchar fan (love his demeanor on the course) to not much of a fan at all.”
  • philly2kuk: “Whether this latest episode is by the rules or not, after his run in with Sergio, the caddie payment issue and the fact he tried to claim his ball had plugged in the fairway at the memorial when it had bounced into somebody else’s pitch mark, he’s making himself an easy target for the press. If he had some sense, he’d be trying his hardest to avoid scrutiny for a while. He missed the cut anyway, why not just leave some of the sand/impediments there and get on with it, so you’re not being targeted again??”

Just viewed this for the first time, how on earth could he have believed he was in the right improving his lie in such a way, cheating in its purest form

I agree this is quite silly, but then again everyone loved it when a handful of people struggled to move a boulder to help out Tiger….
If it was Tiger moving small rocks in a waste area, everyone would praise him for finding a loophole.–fans-move-boulder-for-tiger-woods-in-1999.html

Actually, there was a lot of outrage over that, and it led to rules changes. Most commentators said the same as they do now about Kuchar. Bearing in mind, a large percentage of “Tiger fans” were not “golf fans”, and only cared about golf when he was crushing the field. They came from other sports where you get away with anything you can. They are long gone.

This sounds almost reasonable until you watch the video – He’s just repeatedly grabbing sand/rocks and tossing them aside to make his lie better. It’s hilarious. What a goon.

This whole loose impediment issue is about rocks and twigs and such. It is Not about improving your lie. That’s what this was, he improved his lie. Did he also delay play? I’m thinking he’s not going to like the optics of this episode either.

    Max Buck says ;
“(his niggardliness and this sort of thing).”
I do know the actual definition of this word and it is applicable. But the risk in publishing this … well it’s like going after that tucked pin when you are two up.

He sucks. He is cheap. He thinks he is better than others. His wife is way to hot for him. Hope he trips and falls on his big shiny teeth while finding his wife cheating on him then falls off a roof.

Justin Thomas opens up on skin cancer scare in social media post

Justin Thomas took to social media on Thursday to share his skin cancer scare after a recent trip to the dermatologist.

In his post, the 26-year-old revealed that a mole on his left leg was discovered to be in the early stages of melanoma, on which Thomas stated

“Luckily, we found it at a time where there should be no problems going forward.”

Thomas has urged everyone to get checked, especially those regularly exposed to the sunwhile he also displayed the large incision he was left with after the removal of the mole.

“I recently had a scare at the dermatologist where a very small mole on my left leg was caught in the early stages of melanoma. Luckily, we found it at a time where there should be no problems going forward. That being said, EVERYBODY GO GET CHECKED!!

No harm can come from it and it’s the best way to catch anything before it becomes a serious issue. Especially for all the junior golfers (and other athletes) spending so much time in the sun. It is so important to make sure you’re monitoring your body – no matter how old you are or how much sunscreen you use. It really got my attention, and hoping it does the same to y’all!”

Marc Leishman WD’s from the Greenbrier after being struck with a ball from one of his playing partners in Wednesday’s Pro-Am

Following an opening round of 76, Marc Leishman withdrew from this week’s Military Tribute at the Greenbrier after an already ailing back was made worse in bizarre fashion during Wednesday’s Pro-Am.

According to a report from Golf Digest, the Australian was ready to get his season underway despite four bulging disks in his back, but during Wednesday’s Pro-Am, Leishman was struck in the back by an approach shot from one of his playing partners.

The incident occurred when Leishman believed that the player had picked his ball up on the short fifth hole, and despite seemingly not being in the line of fire, the 35-year-old was then unexpectadly struck by the errant approach shot on the right side of his lower back from a distance of 100 yards.

Speaking to Golf Digest after round one of the event, Leishman stated

“I can’t blame anything I did today on that. But it did hurt at the time. I was good until yesterday. This is frustrating, yeah. I was looking forward to getting the season off to a good start.”

In the same interview, Leishman announced his intention to battle through the pain but subsequently withdrew from the event after shooting a round of six-over-par on Thursday.
