WOTW: U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland’s Breitling Navitimer 1 Chronograph GMT 46

As we all know, this weekend was the U.S. Open at iconic Pebble Beach. Gary Woodland held off back-to-back defending U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka to win his first major title! It was a great tournament with a few players making a run at Woodland, but he held them off and executed the shots when he needed to win. And when he hoisted that US Open trophy high in the air, on his wrist was…nothing.

Woodland never put a watch on after his round, and that naturally makes us think he has no endorsement deal with a watch brand. (A bizarre scene at a tournament sponsored by Rolex). We also did a few searches, and Gary doesn’t have too many photos out there with him wearing a watch. The few photos we found have him wearing an Apple iWatch and a few models that can’t be identified under a sleeve.

I did find a photo on Woodland’s Instagram account, from January 21st, 2018, where he is wearing a watch that is visible, however, so let’s check it out — because it’s no Casio! The watch he appears to be wearing in that photo is a Breitling Navitimer 1 Chronograph GMT 46 (A24322121G1A1) with a silver dial.

WOTW Specs

Watch: Breitling Navitimer 1 Chronograph GMT 46
Reference: A24322121G1A1
Case: Steel
Size: 46mm diameter / 15.5mm tall
Movement: Caliber Breitling 24, 25 jewels
Glass: Cambered Saphire, glareproofed both sides
Bracelet: Steel 24/20mm
Price: $7,480

A bit of background on Breitling: The company was started in 1884 by skilled watchmaker Leon Breitling. He also crafted precision measuring tools, but innovative pocket watches are what made the Breitling name famous. The first Navitimer was created in 1952 and featured a flight slide rule that made it is hit in the aeronautical world.

The Navitimer 1 Chronograph GMT is a pretty big piece at 46mm in diameter and 15.5mm tall, smaller wrists will probably be overwhelmed by the size. The Navitimer is a GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, meaning that you are able to set an additional time zone on the watch. The self-winding, automatic, Breitling Caliber 24 is a 25 jewel movement with a 42-hour power reserve. Water resistance is pretty low at 30 meters (3 atm), but this is a pilot inspired model and not a dive watch. The back of the case also has all the major cities and their timezones engraved in it for reference while traveling the globe…just like Gary does!

While Woodland’s win of the U.S. Open made for some great golf, his lack of wearing a watch during the celebration was a bit disappointing for us here at WOTW! However, with the $2.25 million winner’s check in hand, we’re confident he’ll have no problem upping his wrist game.

NORTH BERWICK, SCOTLAND – JULY 14: Bernd Wiesberger of Austria celebrates with the trophy following victory in the final round of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club on July 14, 2019 in North Berwick, United Kingdom. (Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images)

Across the pond is where we will be this week and that is fitting since it is The Open week! But first we must check out the watch Bernd Wiesberger was wearing after he won the Aberdeen Standard Scottish Open! And while Dylan Frittelli didn’t disappoint on the course with his first PGA Tour win, he did let me down wearing what looked like a fitness tracker on his wrist. But back to a real “watch guy” Bernd, he was kissing that trophy wearing what looked like an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph in stainless steel.

Audemars Piguet is a very high-end Swiss watchmaker that sponsors many golfers across the world. Audemars Piguet was started by Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet in 1875 to create complex and precise timepieces. Today, Audemars Piguet keeps that tradition with their full line of classic and cutting edge designs. Bernd has shown quite a few AP watches on his Instagram account, including this piece in 2014.

Audemars Piguet created the first Royal Oak in 1972, their first luxury sport watch made from steel. Since then the Royal Oak has become an icon of luxury sport watches with its signature hexagon screws placed in an octagon bezel. Bernd’s Royal Oak Chronograph (ref: 26320ST.OO.1220ST.01) is made from Stainless Steel and has AP’s “Grand Tapisserie” dial in black. This dial has an exquisite square texture, matching black subdials, and the date at the 4:30 position. That dial is covered by extremely hard sapphire crystal. In 2012 this updated 41mm Royal Oak Chronograph replaced the previous 39mm version, keeping up with the demand for larger watches.

The Royal Oak Chronograph uses AP’s Caliber 2385 movement, the same used in the current version of this watch, the Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph. The 2385 is a 37 Jewel movement with 40 hours of power reserve and runs at a frequency of 21,600 beats per hour. Bernd’s Royal Oak Chronograph has a water resistance rating of 50 meters and originally came with a stainless steel, folding clasp, bracelet. It looks like he might have changed out the steel bracelet for a black rubber strap that is more common on the Royal Oak Offshore line.

Congrats to Bernd on winning the Aberdeen Standard Scottish Open and for being a watch guy. Great to see an old favorite on his wrist and good luck to him at The Open this week!

WOTW: Jon Rahm’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller

WOTW specs

Watch: Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
Reference: 326934-0003
Case: Oystersteel 904L Stainless Steel
Bezel: White Gold Fluted Ring Command
Size: 42mm
Movement: Rolex 9001, 40 Jewels
Power Reserve: 72 hours
Glass: Saphire Crystal (Cyclops lens over date)
Water Resistance: 100 Meters
Bracelet: Oystersteel 904L Stainless Steel Oyster
Price: MSRP – $14,400 / Retail – $23,000 tp $25,000

While Matthew Wolff was naked-wristed at the 3M Open, over at the Irish Open, Jon Rahm torched Lahinch Golf Club with a final-round 8-under 62 to win by two! For Rahm, this is his third Rolex Series win. It is fitting that Jon won his third Rolex Series event, because when he hoisted that crystal trophy, he was wearing a Rolex Sky-Dweller in Stainless Steel with Blue dial (Ref: 326934-0003)!

The Rolex Sky-Dweller is a watch aimed at travelers. It was introduced in 2012. The Sky-Dweller stands out from other watches with its iconic dual time zone display. This off-center disk rotates to show the home time zone in a 24hr format while the hands show the current time zone. The Sky-Dweller also offers a unique integrated calendar. The day of the month is shown at 3 o’clock like most watches, but the month is marked in a contrasting rectangle above the numerals on the face. This way you don’t have to reset the date for months that are 28 or 30 days.

The date system only requires one adjustment a year on the first of March. The date functions on the Sky-Dweller are very simple to adjust, just rotating the fluted Ring Command bezel counter-clockwise allows the date, local time, or reference time to be changed. To handle all the time zones and dates, Rolex created the 9001 movement with 40 jewels and extra gears for those functions. The 9001 is a COSC certified movement with a 72-hour power reserve and is one of the more complicated movements Rolex has created. Rahm’s model has the blue dial that is protected by a Sapphire Crystal that is extremely scratch resistant. That crystal also has a cyclops lens over the date that magnifies those numbers, making them easier to read. The Sky-Dweller case and bracelet are made from Rolex’s Oystersteel, a 904L stainless steel that offers superior corrosion resistance. Oystersteel is harder to machine but offers a much more durable and consistent polish. The Sky-Dweller is water-resistant to 100 meters and offered in Stainless Steel, Yellow Gold, and Everose Gold.

‘The Rolex Sky-Dweller has become a very popular model and demand is high for all versions. Rolex’s website lists the price of Rahm’s stainless steel/blue dial reference at $14,400 but checking websites like Chrono24, the price for a new model goes between $23,000 and $25,000.

Congratulations to Jon Rahm on winning the Irish Open and making a great choice in timepieces!

WOTW: Nothing! (So let’s look at a Shinola Runwell Automatic instead)

Last week was a week of firsts, the first PGA Tour event in the city of Detroit and the first PGA Tour win for Nate Lashley. If you don’t know, Lashley capped off a shocking life comeback to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Lashley shot a staggering -25 at Detroit Golf Club, winning by six strokes. After his emotional win, Lashley held the new Rocket Mortgage Classic trophy high in the air and on his wrist was…nothing but warm Motor City air (see below).

Since I couldn’t find a picture of Nate wearing a watch, I decided WOTW could feature the popular Detroit watch company Shinola.

Shinola was founded in 2011 producing luxury watches, leather products, jewelry, and other goods. The timepieces are assembled in the historic Argonaut Building in Detroit. The Runwell Automatic is Shinola’s flagship watch that has been years in the making. The Runwell is a staple for Detroiters and can be seen on wrists all over the city.

Many had been asking for an automatic version and after landing on the Sellita SW200-1 movement the Runwell Automatic was born. The Swiss Sellita SW200-1 movement is a 26 Jewel workhorse that is the base movement for many luxury brands. Covering that movement is a classic midnight blue enamel dial with full number markers. The 45mm case is made of stainless steel and wears a little smaller than its dimensions. The Runwell Automatic features a laser engraved, stainless steel caseback with a small window showing off the automatic movement. Finishing off the Shinola is a premium leather strap that is cut and sewn in America. The strap has quick release pins that allow you to switch out straps with no tools.

The Shinola Runwell Automatic is a great, classic style watch, that can be worn with a suit or shorts and a T-shirt. Nate Lashley has an amazing comeback story, as does Detroit, and we hope this win is a turning point in his career! Shinola should send Lashley a Runwell Automatic for that Rocket Mortgage Classic win!
