Jordan Spieth blasts caddie, Michael Greller, during round one of the U.S. Open after back-to-back errors

Published

on

Jordan Spieth began his U.S. Open campaign with a one-over round of 72, and on the eight hole at Pebble Beach, the Texan let his frustration spill over as he laid into his caddie, Michael Greller, after back-to-back mistakes.

The 25-year-old was even par at the time, but on the treacherous eight hole he hit his tee shot through the fairway and off the cliff, before taking a drop and hitting his third shot over the green.

Fox Sports microphones picked up Spieth’s frustration at this moment, as he appeared to blast his caddie.

“Two perfect shots, Michael. You got me in the water on one and over the green on the other.”

After his round, Spieth clarified that the comment was made due to his frustration that as a team, the two couldn’t figure out how to get things right on the hole.

“When you hit a couple of shots exactly where you want and one’s in the water and the next one’s dead over the green, I’m going to be frustrated that as a team we didn’t figure out how to make sure that didn’t happen.

I may have looked like the bad guy, but my intentions were that we should be in play if the ball is hit solidly.”

Spieth tees off on day two alongside Tiger Woods and Justin Rose at 11:24 AM ET.

I will say whe I get wrong yardages on my GPS I flip out. I swear, piss and moan and then realize its my own fault and I should always check the markers.
Jordan is young and wants to win. But he still decides what to hit, how and to where. If he is relying on Michael to always point, aim and even tell him what shot than Michael should get 40% because thats hand holding. Otherwise Jordan needs to be a man, take the data Michael gives and make a decision.
I remember Bones saying Phil was never a blammer. He always made his decisions off what Bones gave and even advised. After all it is still the golfers decision and their actions. That means its their loss or their win. Suck it up bro!

Time for spieth to grow up and take it like a man. What was his excuse for the rest of the tournament?

My only issue is that if you listen to the broadcast, Greller is saying he thinks it is one LESS club on the second shot and Jordan stuck with that club. Greller did not mess up there.

The caddy F*ed up and took the criticism. End of story. Spieth wants to win and was pissed. Not a big deal

Tour Pros sometimes, if not always, depend on their caddies for correct distances and Greller gave him a couple of bad yardages. On this course, that’s a killer. There’s nothing wrong with putting on a little more pressure to remind him that he’s responsible for the yardages. Once he’s got that, it’s off Greller’s back and on him to hit it the proper distance. Think these guys don’t know how far they hit a certain club?….think again.

Agreed, but when you’re paying someone to do a job, you expect it to be so.
He’s also young and foolish at times, he’ll wisen up with age 😉

When I play golf I am responsible for figuring out my yardages then picking the club for the distance I need to hit the ball to the target. Don’t all players have the final say in the process?

I’m not sure how much a caddie makes, but hells yeah I’d be pissed too.
Obvi Spieth should be able to conclude his own game play, however your caddie is your assist so better he better check himself and call a good play. UGH!! ????
