Congratulations to Tiger Woods on his 5th Masters victory, and 15th Major!

That being said, it is 2019-

Sadly, TaylorMade remains RH Only on the $2,000 custom? personal set of TW blade irons.

    Nike wasn’t.

If it was cost-effective to do a lefty set they would. Just doesn’t appeal to enough people. 10% of US golfers are right handed. So you have 10% of the market, and the looking at just the really good players.

      45.25″ from what I gather.

When did TaylorMade start making Mizuno blades? When Tiger endorsed TaylorMade? Design input “ make some like these Mizunos. Or just stamp TaylorMade on these

Seeing that worn spot on his putter, I wonder if it hasn’t developed a slight imperfection or small dent that would affect a true roll. I’m sure not many people have struck that many putts on the face. It is quite amazing that he has basically used that same putter for 20+ years I hear he has a few back ups but that none feel like the original. Pretty sure he could adapt rather quickly since it looks the same.

      I’d say no.

Over time, random grit on the ball or face can scuff the sweet spot, but you won’t ever dent the metal face it at all, using putting speed against urethane.

      Apr 19, 2019 at 2:19 pm

He used a nike putter for most of the years between his last two majors. He went back to his old putter but it’s not like he’s used it for the last 20+ years.

This is such a great story for Tiger. Beat his demons, got himself back on the bike, and continues his dominance! The sky is the limit! Tiger grows up, kicks butt, and is there for his most important fans, his family. It will be delightful to hear all the country club Tiger haters downplay this victory, especially after their President gives him the Medal of Freedom (just to divert from the impending indictments)…

First note. 23 shanks on his equipment that he just won a Masters with. Ok guys, sorry you don’t like his clubs or that he doesn’t have a mixed set. Whatever. He basically designed his own irons that look very similar to DJ and Rory’s TM blades. He wields them better than anyone ever pretty much. So what’s the problem shank voters? He plays traditional looking wedges instead of those hi-toe things (respect) and he went back to the most valuable putter in the game of golf. What’s not to like here? If he suddenly switched to Adam Scott’s f@$ing space-ship you’d have something to bag on.

Second note. Interesting how many fashion mavens commenting on Golf WRX. His line of Nike clothes has always been fairly lame. This isn’t news. But, like, who cares?! The GOAT won again and it was a very cool historical moment for the game, the tournament and fans alike. EVERYBODY looks dumb in a green jacket. Doesn’t matter what collar is going on. Cuz, y’know, it’s a GREEN jacket. The only uglier jacket is the plaid one you get for winning that other tournament I can’t remember the name of right now.

The internet has revealed that the world is full of dirt bags.

The funny thing is, that one day, probably soon, someone is going to develop AI that traces these types of posts back to the the person who wrote them. They’ll be collected in a database somewhere. You’ll be able to figure out if your grandfather was a sad internet troll. People will lose their jobs over it.

        • Todd Smith

          Apr 16, 2019 at 9:13 pm

I think Tim just doesn’t like the dynamics that such judgment and sexism produces.

But yea firing someone or calling them names is only gonna make it worse IMO. The internet didn’t “reveal” dirtbags, Maybe Tim was in denial lol. Keep ur head up Timmy u will find a way 🙂

Haha love it…. awesome win but when was the last time Scotty made a GSS with an oval track?
Maybe because that’s not GSS and the original. Same one that Scotty milled out 2x 1 gram holes to get the perfect weight. But then needed to add red printer ink so the holes would not rust….
When was the last time Stainless Steel rusted… ???
All a farse so Scotty cam get $10k per GSS head..

mock neck for fit and trim men on the course, the rest of us look like jelly beans wearin’ on of those.

        • dtrain

          Apr 15, 2019 at 2:29 pm

Slipping a green jacket over a red mock is a bad look, really bad. You’d think Tiger would have had an extra shirt in his locker or something. I really can’t wait for the whole Nike athletic look to go away. It’s fine for dudes playing a muni on the weekends , but just doesn’t look professional.

That being said, congrats to Tiger.

WITB Time Machine: Geoff Ogilvy’s 2006 U.S. Open-winning clubs

2006 was a pretty good year for Geoff Ogilvy and Cobra Golf.

In February, Geoff won the Accenture Match Play at La Costa Resort against Davis Love III, and then in June, he famously went on to come from behind and win the U.S. Open at Winged Foot—the site of this year’s competition, with clutch pars coming down the stretch.

It was an exciting finish to a fantastic tournament, and it was also an exciting time for gear junkies since it was also around this time Cobra, Geoff’s equipment sponsor at the time, relaunched a tour staff, which included the likes of Ian Poulter, JB Holmes, Camilo Villegas, Kevin Na, LPGA Tour player Jeong Jang, and of course the aforementioned Mr. Ogilvy.

Cobra’s back on tour!

Cobra had all kinds of cool prototype clubs on tour including long neck versions of Speed Series drivers and various iron sets—the above were the first “new” Cobra blades at retail.

I should also note that 2006 was still four years before Acushnet sold Cobra and its assets to Puma, and it was very likely that there may have been some back-and-forth trading of forged blade and CB iron designing with the R&D team over at Titleist while Cobra was outfitting its tour staff—but that part is just speculation.

Either way, some of the tour prototypes ended up coming to life in the retail market including the drivers used by Poulter and Ogilvy with the Cobra Speed Pro series. The Australian won the U.S. Open with a Cobra X-Speed Proto (seen below)

Geoff Ogilvy U.S. Open WITB: Set breakdown

With Cobra under the same umbrella as Titleist, Ogilvy’s bag had a mix of both Cobra and Titleist gear, so let’s break down each club and its historical significance.

Driver: Cobra X-Speed Prototype with 80g Aldila VS Proto. This was strictly a tour prototype but it did become the Speed Pro D when it came to retail. Honestly, this is one of my favorite drivers of all time. To demonstrate how influential Ogilvy’s setup was, the stock shaft in the Pro D when it was released was a 65g VS Proto painted yellow to match the club graphics.

Fairway wood: Titleist 906F2 with TT Dynamic Gold X100. Here is an interesting piece of trivia: was Geoff Ogilvy the last golfer to win a major with a steel-shafted fairway wood? I believe the answer to be yes. Tiger had gone to graphite by then, but the smooth swinging Aussie was still using the tried and tested steel shaft.

Irons: Cobra Proto forged CB (2-iron) and Prototype MB’s (3- 9-iron). These irons looked so cool, and as much as you could argue that they were very similar to Titleist 690 CB and MB’s they weren’t, they were Cobra forged irons and that made them way cooler. What is also interesting is he only played the set to 9-iron and used a pitching wedge that matched the rest of his wedges—he was a man before his time.

Wedges: This is a great example of how tour player trends change the consumer and retail market. His wedges consisted of Titleist Vokeys: 50 degrees (bent to 48), 56 degrees, and 60 degrees (bent to 61). This was a time before wedge companies were designing matching pitching wedges to replace stock wedges in iron sets, and because of this, a number of players were bending 50-degree wedges strong to fill the gap—it also helps that his irons lofts were weaker to gapping.

Now, we see matching wedges up to 45 degrees as many players are opting for pitching wedges to match their gap and sand wedges for shot control around the greens.

Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport Prototype in oilcan finish, which I think we could all agree is the prototype shape of what is now famously referred to as the 009.

Ball: Titleist Pro V1
