Forum Thread of the Day: “Is Rory McIlroy now a bad pressure player?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from bscinstnct, who brings up the topic of Rory McIlroy’s recent struggles to get over the line. Our members discuss why they feel the Ulsterman is currently unable to break through and win at the moment, and whether it’s because he now struggles mainly when the heat is on.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • gvogel: “There is only one person who can figure out his inability to close the deal, and it is Rory.  Not a psychologist, not a caddy, not anyone else. On some deep subconscious level, Rory is going to have to become his own best friend. He’s not there in the way that Arnold was, or Jack was, or Tiger was/is.”
  • MMB1500: “The reality is that McIlroy’s career will be 99% defined by how many times, and which tournaments he wins, not by how many additional millions he has in his bank account. McIlroy knows this. Everyone knows this. His inability to close out tournaments from positions of strength is fast becoming a crisis. That’s the point.”
  • CasualLie: “I wonder if sometimes being a long hitter is a curse for Rory.  Especially on par 5s.  260 yards in, even with iron in hand how accurate can you be?  So you miss the green (understandable) and end up in a bad spot (going to happen a lot)…is that better than laying up to a wedge distance you know you can get within 10 feet, and closer to 5 feet?”
  • JonnyKrasnodar: “It’s entirely mental. He defends, and he ends up in bad spots, he plays aggressive, and he ends up in bad spots. It’s all over his face. ‘Why me?'”

When I watched him in person on the range and on course he was too busy trying to look cool. He is much more self conscious than his earlier years with an ego to boot. He has developed a “look at me” persona and then propitiates to fellow golf stars when having a bad round. He needs to loose this attitude and genuinely not care what people think of him, his golf game or hitting bad shots.

What’s with all the Rory publicity lately? He’s such a nothingburger, not even remotely entertaining to watch. Well, except when he tried to cheat at WGC Mexico.

Jack Nicklaus had 19 2nd place finishes in majors….. can we get an article about why he can’t close?

Somebody tell him to quit using the 7.0 in his irons, no matter how much he lifts heavy in the gym, he needs to get real and go back to the 6.5 shaft that won him so many before, and let go of his ego

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
  • driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300.  The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length.  I am playing a Ventus Red 70.   I play 70 grams in my fairways.  I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee.  When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time.  So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck.  The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
  • JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”

Why Ludvig Aberg is my new favorite player – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing one of the new sensations in the world of golf – Ludvig Aberg. The 24-year-old finished solo second at the Masters a couple of weeks ago, and gained many plaudits, including from several WRXers.

One member, RoyalMustang, took to the forums to explain why Aberg is now their favorite player, saying:

“I loved the way the Ludvig was out there, having a great time, not taking himself or the situation too seriously. Even after the double at 11, he was like “well, that’s golf!” Loose and relaxed: that’s the way to play. It’s obvious he loves what he’s doing, he loves the big moments, and he loves being a part of it all.

Arnold Palmer was viewed that way. Just like Brooks Robinson was forever viewed as not just a great baseball player, but a great human being and friend to Baltimore.”

And our members have been reacting and sharing their positive takes on the young Swede.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • redfirebird08: “Ludvig has a great attitude, a great smile, and a great golf swing.”
  • otto6457: “I’m very lucky to have talked with Ludde several times at the Rawls Course at Texas Tech.  He’s a truly nice guy and very friendly.  Always said hello when we passed each other in the club house and was always smiling. Watching him hit balls on the range was a joy.  He has “that sound” and trajectory to die for.  There were many times he was out on the range in 30+ mph winds just hitting the most beautiful shots that just seemed to ignore the wind.  World class ball striker. And yes……..I am a fan boy.”
  • konklifer: “I like him. In an era of endless waggles and laboring, his swing and pace of play are a joy to watch.
