Hidden Gem of the Day: The Links at Ivy Ridge in Akron, New York
These aren’t the traditional “top-100” golf courses in America, or the ultra-private golf clubs you can’t get onto. These are the hidden gems; they’re accessible to the public, they cost less than $50, but they’re unique, beautiful and fun to play in their own right. We’re treating this as a bucket list of golf courses to play across the country, and the world. If you have a personal favorite hidden gem, submit it here!
Giving my brother Gianni Magliocco a breather for a few days. From the wintry north, here’s the fourth installment of a five-part Hidden Gem of the Day series from the Buffalo-Niagara region of western New York state. A pair of courses, unaffiliated, sit within a mile of each other as the crow flies. As the golfer drives, it’s a mile-and-a-half. The first is the Links at Ivy Ridge.
Designed in the late 1990s, it opened in the early 2000s to great acclaim. Although the layout of the course was recognized as excellent, the key to the entire build was the hiring of Blaine Harrison of Canada as the shaper. Ivy Ridge is more parkland than links, with characteristics of Irish courses working in combination with upstate farmland.
The Links at Ivy Ridge offers myriad tee decks, ranging from 5,100 to 7,000 yards. Dustin Johnson holds the course record of 65, recorded in a USGA Men’s Amateur qualifier in 2006. The course opens with a journey up a rise, then cascades down to the west, in a manner you won’t soon forget. Ivy Ridge offers dry washes adjacent to the fairways, strategically-situated ponds alongside greens, and putting surfaces that amaze with their size, and often beguile with their internal contours. My favorite holes include the par-4 2nd, the par-5 13th, and the par-3 15th.
Fall rates at The Links at Ivy Ridge checked in at $30 all day, every day. Even in the high season of summer, they don’t climb any more than 50 US dollars.

You’re a good man for giving this course some due credit. I grew up in Clarence and still play the course with my family everytime I’m back. I appreciate you
