Wilson Staff Cortex wins “Driver vs. Driver 2” (in-hand photos)

Published

on

Designed by show contestant Evan Hoffman of San Diego, California, the Wilson Staff Cortex is the winning driver design of the second season of Driver vs. Driver.

The titanium-bodied Cortex features carbon panels and a sliding adjustable weight system.

Additional Cortex features

Fast Cage Technology — The company describes this as, a “weight-tuned titanium internal structure with an impressive 44% of its surface area covered in Carbon Fiber Panels. This Ti –Carbon construction allows for extremely precise distribution of weight and frees up additional weight for maximum adjustability.”

Wilson’s longest ever Slide Track — An eight gram sliding adjustable weight is positioned in the center of the head. Additionally interchangeable two and eight-gram weights can be adjusted on the sole and heel of the club.

Fast Fit Technology hosel system — Players have six adjustable options to dial in the loft of the driver in half-degree increments.

A Fujikura ATMOS Tour Spec shaft — red, blue, or black — is standard.

“Season Two of the show yielded two amazing finalists; the Cortex and the Rozwell,”
said Tim Clarke, President of Wilson Golf. “Ulimately, the Cortex came out on top with
its clean, classic shape, overall consistent performance results from a wide range of
player testers, and steady sound across the entire face of the club. We are excited to get
this driver into the hands of players at all levels of the game.”

Hoffman presented his original concept to Wilson LABS, and the engineers chose if from hundreds of submissions. After a nearly two-year process of refining, Hoffman is the winner of a $250,000 grand prize and the inclusion of his creation in the Wilson Staff Line.

The Wilson Staff Cortex will retail for $499.99 and will be available in 9-, 10.5-, and 12-degree models.

Wilson has to find there key marketing component. Years ago it was the Fat Shaft. Callaway has the Jailbreak, Taylormade has the twist face, Ping Dragonfly tech, PXG has all the moveable weights, etc…etc… Wilson keeps making these non marketable clubs and think they can compete for our dollar. There is nothing new here..

I just hit this driver, it’s a dud. The quality and technology here is no different than anything else on the market. Wilson has missed the mark. So they create a show to design a driver that’s new, something to create buzz. They have a season long show about an r&d competition, and basically made a driver copying other manufactures, but with nothing to market. I would expect to see something like twist face, or jailbreak, some sort of marketing technology from Wilson here. Unfortunately there is none.

Pretty version of the Tailor Made M1. Much better looking than the Wilson Titan. Me won’t pay that price. I will get one from a hack for a fraction of the price.

So many haters out there. Wilson has very skilled engineers including some ex guys from Adams and Callaway. Hit this driver today and it was better than my Rogue. I bought it right away, plus i can still get a decent trade in for my Cally. Kudos to the Wilson Team!

fellas fellas…. there is no innovative engineering in these titanium drivers… it’s just an exercise in shapes and cosmetics. The only ‘engineering’ is manufacturing engineering done in Chi na… where titanium manufacturing is superior and cheaper.

The driver looks similar to the Cobra F6+ on the bottom and carbon fiber crown from TM and Callaway. This is something we have already seen in other clubs unless it increases yards and ball flight I have very low confidence it will be a great seller and at that price point doubt it will. Probably by late March $399.99 or $349.99

They were too scared to go with the cool looking non-traditional one in the Bette designed and intriguing Rozwell so they went with the boring Taylormade one. Duh

5 bills?!! =D What’a riot!! That hunk ‘o tin prolly cost $12.42 tops to produce, and $1.02 of that went into the grip! It was fun watching
the last DVD winner collect dust in it’s overproduced marketing station near the putting area!!! They didn’t even feature the monstrosity
    in the club section!

Has Wilson made adapters and weights readily available this time around? Haven’t in the past, so those of us who have favorite shafts or prefer different lengths/swingweights have little or no interest-especially at $499.

They spent millions developing this show and the club, and all they could come with is a rip off the sliding weight mechanism and a cumbersome swapper weight on either side. Duh. They didn’t have to do the show to come up with that, surely?
They should have gone with the Rozwell, because it was an intriguing design and different from all the rest.
Now we are stuck with a TM rip off that will all be forgotten in a couple months.
What a waste of time and money. Sorry Wilson, you failed again.

Wilson is ruining themselves with this Driver vs Driver stuff. I want to think the best of the best engineers with all the best technology and tools built my driver, not Joe Blow off the street. May be a good driver but not too many people will be interested I imagine.
Maybe they are making money on the TV show

For real tho.. How many people want to plunk down premium money for a driver they know came from an amateur tinkerer? Also, if you work in Wilson’s engineering group, aren’t you looking for a new job at this point? They’re bringing people in off the street to do your job for you.

    • sam

      Nov 14, 2018 at 5:15 pm

yes, because Wilson’s engineering group had nothing to do with the performance of this club…(insert eye roll and sarcastic voice)

    • Brad

      Nov 14, 2018 at 5:38 pm

Karsten Solheim was an “amateur tinkerer” in the realm of golf. He only managed to create the most iconic and used putter design in the world, as well as one of the most popular iron designs ever. Both of these innovations changed golf club design forever. Both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were college dropouts with no “formal” qualifications in computer science or engineering, but both led companies that created some of the most revolutionary products in their industry.

      Shall I go on?

    • CrashTestDummy

      Nov 14, 2018 at 5:39 pm

This one looks like it has the standard settings for customizing flight patterns. I know what you mean. I am pretty sure that all golf companies use industrial designers to create the look of the drivers, but they work closely with engineers though. . On the next season (if they have one) should pair each designer with an engineer that is working or worked in the golf industry.

So what makes this driver overpriced compared to those other low spin drivers out there now? If you take the labels off this driver what do you find? You get a driver that has a carbon crown(some carbon in the sole), movable weights for shot shape bias, a track and weight system to control spin/launch along with an adjustable hosel plus a plethora of no up-charge premium shafts. Now if you apply these kind of technologies to any other brand what do you expect to pay….probably that $449-499 range if not more depending on the shaft added. I think it is probably a fair price to ask for when you have all that proven tech. Now as a whole i think driver prices have maybe gotten out of hand but that’t the market we live in today, heck premium shafts go for $500-600 and some cases over $1000. If it performs as well as others do i don’t see a problem with them asking for $499.

I play Wilson Staff ci 11’s and they are great clubs and sexy as hell with an all black finish with that said I am a Wilson staff fan. I also love the Duo balls but my god how can they put the same Wilson logo on a $499 club that they do on a 125 starter set that you can buy at Walmart. I thought this was the whole reason they use the Wilson staff brand to differentiate themselves as serious players clubs.

Would be interesting to know the swing weight and if they will be offering any heavier weights for those of use who might want to trim it down a half inch. Saw stock length was 45 inches. But nothing else as for specs on their website besides the different shafts.

I must admit, its a good looking driver. The polished head has a high end luxury look to it. It sounds like it will perform well, based on the reviews from the show. The bottom does remind me of the Taylormade M1, so nothing too exciting there. The holo caust was a hoax. Other than that I can’t wait to try it out and put it in the bag!

Ask any of us with the first one, the Triton, had I paid more then $79 for it I would have been very upset. No way a Wilson “Made for TV” driver is worth $499….check and see how many tour pros have had success with the first one….bet you will not find to many Triton drivers on any tour..They may pay one of their pros to play one the new ones in a tournament or two…chances of it staying in the bag after promotion money are very slim…..

        Nov 15, 2018 at 7:31 am

The driver was changed massively by the Wilson engineers. Watch the bloody show before ripping the driver. You don’t like it because of the brand, because you are brand snobs.

      • Bill Cavanaugh

        Nov 15, 2018 at 3:22 pm

Most tour players play the driver they got paid the most for. It’s how Taylor Made keeps their number 1 position. They pay the most money

        • Rico Strong

OK-Old guy’s shafts are different-just checked the fujikuragolf.com site and there are no reg or sr. Atmos white/red shafts listed, however the Wilson.com site lists both for “Red” minus the “tour spec” designation. Have to wonder what is really under the white/red paint job on the reg and sr. shafts. Oh well, all the test results I have seen so far tell me I should be playing the Cleveland Launcher HB anyway. Saw the $499 Cortex price and bought a mint Launcher to mess with for $149 (and the miyazaki sr. shaft is 1/2 white to boot-‘course I don’t know what’s under that paint job either.) Isn’t golf (equipment) fun?

I am going back for another session when they get the correct shaft that I should be using. I only buy a driver about every 5 years or so, and play about 100 rounds a year.

Honestly, kudos to Wilson for flexing a little muscle with the driver vs driver show. The rapid prototyping and offering that kid a job. I mean sure people want to play TM because of the mass appeal, but I would like to see what this club can do. I hope they incentivize their tour pros to play these because to some degree drivers are so comparable today.

    Nov 14, 2018 at 1:38 pm

This is a good looking club and will probably perform just as well as other top name brands. Wilson has put out some solid irons and wedges as well. The driver market is just oversaturated so everyone saying they can get it for $129.99 next season, that applies to about every driver. Are you paying for performance or the name? It’s a tough market, just ask Nike.

    Nov 14, 2018 at 1:25 pm

For all you ‘its an M1 driver’, yes it may look the same with regards to the weight track but the titanium cage is very different and the main reason it’s so consistent across the whole face.

Before you make negative comments, give it a fair chance and try it- it may surprise you.

If you’re going to compare it to TaylorMade, don’t forget to add the $250 shaft upcharge for the Atmos TS. That is an amazing shaft for a standard offering. It’s a great deal when looking at a $750 TM driver.

Great looking driver. but not the right pricing. I would expect this price from Callaway,Taylormade and Titleist.if you want to sell a lot of these $299.00 to $349.00. The ping G400 Max is $399.00 . Come in less than the big guns, more people will have to give it a try, due to this driver being a value for the price. IE… Cleveland Golf Soft Putter line or The 2019 Tour Edge Exotics Driver Line. You almost just have to give it a try with the same technology being offered at a price you can’t resist. That should be the marketing strategy.Once people compare after hitting the established versus Wilson Cortex, they will not see that much difference to warrant purchasing the big brand name.

I’m sure the top photo of laying the driver on the railroad tracks isn’t the mental image Wilson wants readers to be having….

If you watch the programme you’d see what makes it different. It may look similar to others, but there is lots that makes it different. Guessing you guys are the type that only buys a driver because it’s a certain brand or popular model or a certain pro uses it. None of that should matter when picking the best club for yourself.

I am interested in this driver. Wilson’s irons, especially the v4’s, are some of the best irons I have ever used. Their PMP wedges look legit and I would love a set of their raw v6’s. I may go full blown Wilson that is how confident I am with their gear. Only problem is if I decide to move away once committed I will lose my shirt on resale.

    • BRENT

      Nov 14, 2018 at 12:29 pm

You are correct! Wilson has to start somewhere…again. I love the brand myself but younger people don’t get it. They may have caused the problem by selling recycled soda cans at Wal-Mart during the 90’s-2000’s but… That doesn’t take away from the Staff line in my opinion.

From Mygolfspy.com “That $499 does include some nice no upcharge options. Along with the full array of Atmos Tour Spec shafts, you can also select the EvenFlow Black or Blue or the HZRDUS Black or Red from Project X, or the UST Mamiya Recoil. Great looking club, overpriced. I agree with Jbone, would need every shaft option to substantiate price…

A shocking Backstryke putter appearance + 7 interesting gear photos from the Zurich Classic

Published

on

Welcome to New Orleans, where TPC Louisiana plays host to the 2024 Zurich Classic. In between breakfast beignets and nightly Creole feasts, PGA Tour players are also competing in the unique two-man format at the Zurich this week.

Although the vibes in Nawlins are a bit lighter-fare than the recent back-to-back competitions the Masters and the RBC Heritage signature event), the gear news was no less serious this week.

We spotted some recent changes from Rory McIlroy, a very rare Odyssey Backstryke putter, dove into the bag of legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and spotted Patrick Cantlay continuing to test new equipment.

Get your beads out and crack your crawfish, because it’s time for an equipment rundown from The Big Easy (meaning New Orleans, of course, not Ernie Els).

Rory’s on-and-off lob wedge

Since the end of 2023, Rory McIlroy has had an on-again, off-again relationship with a Titleist Vokey K-Grind lob wedge. In his last start, it was on, and the wedge is back in the bag again this week. We got a great look at the complicated grind that McIlroy uses.

A full look into McIlroy’s bag above also shows that he switched out of the TaylorMade BRNR Mini Copper that he used at the RBC Heritage, and he’s back into the Qi10 core 3-wood. As we discussed last week, McIlroy will likely keep the BRNR around as a course-specific club, trading it in and out for the 3-wood.

Turning Back the clock

Unless Tommy Gainey is in the field, it’s unlikely you’ll ever see Odyssey’s Backstryke technology make an appearance on the PGA Tour.

But then, when you least expect it, Russ Cochran shows up.

For more than a decade – since the 2013 Sony Open in Hawai’i – Cochran has been stuck on 599 PGA Tour starts. This week will be his 600th.

Cochran is in the field at the Zurich this week playing alongside Eric Cole, whose regular caddie is Reed Cochran, Russ’s son.

The Backstryke putter was first released back in 2010, and its unique design helps shift the axis point of the putter closer to the CG of the head. And, the putter is getting a nod this week at the Zurich Classic, thanks to Cochran’s 600th career PGA Tour start.

The putter is certainly awesome, but don’t forget to check out Cochran’s full WITB from this week.

Drew Brees with a Super Bowl winning Scotty Cameron putter

Drew Brees, a legendary retired quarterback for the hometown New Orleans Saints, made an appearance at the Zurich’s Wednesday Pro-Am, playing alongside Zach Johnson, Ryan Palmer, and current Saints QB Derek Carr.

Brees’ bag included a TaylorMade Stealth2 Plus driver, a BRNR Mini 13.5-degree, a Stealth 5-wood, a mixed set of P-790 and P-760 irons, Milled Grind Hi-Toe wedges, and a custom Scotty Cameron “New Orleans Saints” putter, which Scotty made for Brees following his Super Bowl MVP-winning performance in 2010.

It should also be noted that Brees has his Venmo QR code as a bag tag.

If you’re gambling with Brees on the course, just know that not having cash won’t work as an excuse.

Brilliant.

Stricker’s unrecognizable putter

Steve Stricker has made numerous upgrades to his bag recently, including a new TSR3 driver and T100 irons, but his longtime Odyssey White Hot No. 2 putter is still going strong. It’s the most recognizable unrecognizable putter ever.

Here’s a better look at Stricker’s flatstick, which he started using back in 2007.

Patrick Cantlay has opened the equipment-switching floodgates

Over on the PGA Tour’s Equipment Report this week, we covered Cantlay’s recent switch into Ping Blueprint S irons, and a Titleist TSR2 driver.

Cantlay hadn’t switched irons for about seven years, so the iron switch he made at The 2024 Masters came as a shock to the norm. He simply isn’t one to change gear very often, so anytime Cantlay makes a switch, it’s news.

It seems the floodgates of equipment testing have opened up a bit for Cantlay, who was also spotted testing a custom Scotty Cameron blade putter on Tuesday this week. By Wednesday, Cantlay was back practicing with his familiar Scotty Cameron T5 Proto mallet, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on going forward.

Daniel Berger’s custom Jailbird site lines

Berger, who’s currently using Odyssey’s Ai-One Mini Jailbird mallet putter, has a unique 3-dot, 2-line alignment on the crown of his navy-white-navy-white mallet putter. Looking down at the putter, it’s easy to see why this alignment system would help; it just seems impossible to set up to the ball off-center, or misaligned to the target.

Also, for anyone worried, you can rest easy. Yes, he’s still playing the 2013 TaylorMade TP MC irons, which we highlighted in our recent “Modern Classics: Old vs. New” video testing series.

FitzMagic teams back up

Brothers Matthew and Alex Fitzpatrick are teaming up once again at the Zurich this year, and Bettinardi Golf hooked them up with some festive “FitzMagic” headcovers to match this week.

See what else is in Alex Fitzpatrick’s WITB here

And, with that, we say goodbye to the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Don’t forget to check out all of our photos from this week, including 30 unique photo galleries full of equipment photos.

We’ll see you next week in Texas for the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson!
