Forum Thread of the Day: “What if Tiger is back?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from DJGainer, who asks fellow GolfWRX members what the effect will be should Tiger Woods go ahead and regularly win once again on the PGA Tour. Our members discuss both the possibility of Woods being able to achieve that and the impact that it would have on the game of golf.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to join the discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • the bishop: “If he wins he wins, and I think ratings will be good.  But as far as the same effect as back in the late 90’s early 00’s, no.  He was younger then, in his 20’s and younger kids relate to someone like that.  My oldest son, born in 1987, began playing golf partly because of Tiger and when we’d go to the range, he’d swing hard and say “I AM Tiger Woods” like one of his commercials from the time.  I don’t think he would inspire younger kids today like he did then.  He’s in his 40’s, and his oldest kid is a middle schooler now I think.  It’ll be great for his long time fans though.”
  • straightshot7: “It won’t transform the game because he already did that. But anytime he’s in contention there will obviously be very high ratings. If he’s in the final group of a major, you will probably see some TVs exploding from excessive rating syndrome.”
  • bazinky: “Plus, just imagine if Tiger is able to win a major and is playing well enough to have an actual rivalry that isn’t one-sided? You have the young-gun or guns versus a resurgent all-time champ adding to golf history. Just look at what happened at the Tour championship (which no one normally cares too much about). It would be absolutely explosive for golf!”
  • IVM: “Tiger winning 2 or 3 tournaments a year would be amazing, and if he won a major that would be incredible. Do not forget he is a middle-aged man with a fused back if he can do this that would be great for golf. He cannot dominate as he once did as his body would not stand up to the pressure. But the above would be good enough to move the needle in golf.”

Can we talk about this when he wins a full field event on a course he’s never won on?

So if he wins the Masters (again) can we talk about it or still no?

You missed the point genius. It won’t happen so let’s never talk about it again. Time for the Tiger bandwagon to disappear and go find their next cool thing so golf can find it’s sustainable market footprint.

Forum Thread of the Day: “Softest, most forgiving players cavity irons?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from moorebaseball, who asks fellow GolfWRX members for their recommendations on soft and forgiving players cavity irons. A whole host of different irons get a mention in the thread, with Mizuno’s cavity irons proving to be one of the most popular choices amongst our members.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • jimb: “I haven’t hit anything better feeling than the 2013 Callaway X-Forged.”
  • deep18: “As others have said, JPX919 Tour. Players look but according to Mizuno’s data, slightly more forgiving than the AP3 and almost as forgiving as the MMC.”
  • elwhippy: “Mizuno will be the softest. Srixon a close second. I imagine the TM will be most forgiving. AP2s are very blade like in their performance. P760 goes very high and straight with DG 105 and 120 shafts.”
  • 300_Straight: “Wilson V6 Tour is also a great feeling iron from what I’ve heard. Never personally tested it, though. Any Srixon 7 or 9 series irons are very soft, as are most Mizunos, Callaway X Forged, etc.”

Forum Thread of the Day: “Peter Kessler’s social media strategy”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from BenSeattle, who brought up the topic of former Golf Channel and PGA Tour host, writer, and producer, Peter Kessler’s recent social media outbursts. Kessler has been very prominent on social media of late, beginning by lashing out at a promo video from No Laying Up, and more recently targetting Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee in many different posts. The erratic nature of Kessler’s attacks has got many of our members perplexed, as well as Kessler himself, blocked from following Chamblee’s Twitter account.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

dlygrisse: “Lots have said very similar things about Brandel here. Keep in mind these are both people who get paid to make golf seem edgy. They are both probably good guys if you were to meet them, but I’m guessing they won’t be playing a round together anytime soon.”

MattyO1984: “The shame in it all is that PK actually had some valid points about Brandel and No Laying Up, but for someone who made a living out of talking, he articulated those points like a drunken best man giving a speech at a wedding.”

gators78: “No Laying Up released a 2 minute promo video for a travel series they have coming up. Peter Kessler himself posted ~150 responses, which is absolutely insane, I welcome people to actually go look at his twitter feed if you think I’m exaggerating. After that jumped the shark he moved to firing off at Brandel. Something is clearly off.”

Forum Thread of the Day: “What are the best Maltby irons ever, and why?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from AbSWFPGA, who asked fellow GolfWRX members for their opinion on what Maltby irons they consider to be the best and why. Plenty of different Maltby irons get a mention, and the thread even inspired one of our members to pick up a set.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Shifty76: “This forum is bad for my wallet. Really had no desire to switch irons from the AP1s I bought a couple of years ago, but you buggers sold me on the Maltbys. In the process of buying a set of like-new 4-GW DBMs now…not even sure if I’ll hit the 4i as my Heavenwood covers that distance, but if I can hit it well enough maybe it’ll go in the bag on windy days.”
  • Perrkka: “I have only played the DBM. They are excellent. I put them together with Project-X 5.5 shafts. The result was great.”
  • Nat: “I’ve hit almost every Maltby iron since ’03. I have to agree on the DBM/TE/MO5 as the best. I currently play the KE4 Tour + which is a tad more forgiving, but not nearly as sexy looking. The TS2 is up there as well, clean look, very solid feel, just not enough to warrant the $ over my KE4 tour+.”
  • Sparky14: “I just picked up a DBM set. Even on graphite shafts, I’m shocked how harsh those heads feel. And being the ho that I am, I also picked up a set of Honma 737V irons on steel shafts, and they feel so much softer than the DBM. I’ve always loved the M05/TE line, so I’ll stick with the non-black Maltby versions.”
