Patrick Reed airs out Jordan Spieth and Captain Jim Furyk following the 2018 Ryder Cup loss

Published

on

In an interview with Karen Crouse of The New York Times, Patrick Reed held zero punches about his displeasure with former Ryder Cup partner Jordan Spieth, Captain Jim Furyk, and the egos of the United States team.

First, a bit of back story. Patrick Reed — dubbed “Captain America” — played foursomes and fourballs with Jordan Spieth in both the 2014 and 2016 Ryder Cups, amassing a 4-1-2 record as partners in the two events.

But when it came to the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, Patrick Reed was paired with Tiger Woods in both fourball sessions (losing both), while Spieth played with Justin Thomas in fourballs and foursomes (Spieth/JT went 3-1). Reed sat the bench for both foursomes sessions.

According to Reed, the decision to split from Spieth was not his call, or the captain’s, but rather, due to Spieth’s wishes. Reed also took shots at Furyk for sitting him in both fourball matches.

Here’s what Reed had to say…

About Jordan Spieth

“The issue’s obviously with Jordan not wanting to play with me,” Reed said, according to the NYT. He added: “I don’t have any issue with Jordan. When it comes right down to it, I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with or if the person likes me as long as it works and it sets up the team for success. He and I know how to make each other better. We know how to get the job done.”

In the post-Ryder Cup press conference with the entire team, the ex-partners were asked about the split, to which Spieth answered: “We were totally involved in every decision that was made… Jim allowed it to be a player-friendly environment.”

When asked about this moment in the interview by the NYT, Reed said, “I was looking at (Jordan Spieth) like I was about to light the room up like Phil in ’14,” in reference to Phil Mickelson calling out Captain Tom Watson in the 2014 post-Ryder Cup interview.

About Captain Furyk

“I thought he might go back with the groups that have worked in the past (after the first alternate-shot session).”

“For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice.”

About the U.S. Team

“Every day, I saw ‘Leave your egos at the door,’” Reed said, of inspirational messages in the team room. “They (the Europeans) do that better than us.”

Solution: Make Patrick Reed the next Ryder Cup captain, a playing captain even if he qualifies on points. You think this is a joke? All of this year’s vice captains had pathetic Ryder Cup records. Who is remotely qualified to be the next US captain?

The ever so team-sports-pretending Ryder Cup is unbearably boring we need dramas to entertain the fans, especially after losing.

I bet on the European team and won a nice piece of cash. The USA team had no chance with Mickelson and Watson on it. They cannot hit their drivers straight enough, and Mickelson is old and washed up. Also, Furyk was a bad stupid captain. His pairings were stupid, like Woods and Reed, and Woods and Dechambeau. Tiger got no help from those two. Also, Koepka was paired badly. I think Reed is correct to some degree.

From our European perspective, he is, to us, your typical American bullish, opinionated, loud-mouthed guy.
At least he lives up to that, and owns it.
We don’t know about the rest of you guys. Bunch of wusses, is how you say it, is it? Yes that’s what you are. At least he’s got some balls that the rest of you don’t.

Funny… the American squad sure has alot of Major championships for some guys with no balls ????… your boy Rose barely had the nads to squeeze out that FedEx cup… Not to mention rorys self castration on 18 Sunday at the cup

But Justin Rose did squeeze it out, as you might say. He actually won, didn’t he?
But, to give credit to Reed, he did win his singles match on Sunday. So he should be allowed to be given the space to air it out

And I don’t care to help promote PPV for PGA Golf either…. If this thing is successful, we’ll be seeing PPV of the majors first, and then it’ll pollute down to the other tournaments. No way will I help with that.

I was pissed off more about the giant circle jerk that was the post RC press conference. Bryson looking at Jordan to thank him was as sad as his play. They should worry more about winning than feelings. I rarely appauld Reed but he is right! Also, going into it I knew they wouldn’t play Webb enough. I’m not a Webb fan but he hits FWs.

Neither Woods or Mickelson had any business at this Ryder Cup. In my opinion there being picked at all was forced upon the sport by the sponsors. We all know how much of a draw they both are and I can see the sponsors demanding that they play. More people watch and the advertising is worth more. Anything is for sale as was this team.

Team USA looked tired and ready to end the season. Team Europe looked ready to play. Our group at the course did question the team picks given the previous success, but the whole weekend looked like Team USA was tired, not prepared, not cohesive and not into the Ryder Cup.

That’s probably because the PGA Tour Championship is always the week before the Ryder Cup while the European Tour Championship is in November, the season was already over for the PGA Tourgolfers while it was still the middle of the season for the European Tour golfers

Pat, apparently you forgot that golf is first, a gentleman’s game. Show some class. No one likes a loser who whines, and your performance was hardly noteworthy. You had every chance to show people what you’re made of, and you’re still failing. You are in charge of you, and although you can’t control what other people do or say, you can at least act with some humbleness and grace.

For one, Mickelson should have stayed home. Very few U.S. players could hit the fairway. Bomb and gouge was a bomb. Many of them were coming in playing crappy. Reed was one of the least accurate. The U.S. never had a “team”. They were just individuals. The Euros were playing well before the Cup. They weren’t even close to underdogs. Next Cup you MUST leave Woods and Mickelson off the team. Their record alone proves that they’re not capable. Suffer thru some young players, to get your matches. Guess how the next Cup course in Italy will be set up? Fairways and greens always win the day.

Thought Woods, PM, and BAD were good captain’s picked because were in the top 12 by the same points criteria that determined the top 8. Picks should have been done after the PGA. Finau was a good pick but Xander would have been good also IMO.

Woods looked exhausted walking to first tee on Friday morning.
Nobody should sit out a whole day. Should be a rule.
How can you play bad then diss pairing, captain?
Thought rough was ridiculous but both sides had to deal with it.

When a quarter of the team – Koepka +4, Reed +9, Watson +10, and Mickelson +13 – combine for a +36 at the Tour Championship one week before the Ryder Cup, it’s usually not a good sign of what’s to come. Scores like that usually don’t turn around in a week in a hostile environment. You could see the lingering effects during the Ryder Cup. It’s no wonder they lost.

Good thing they put together a ‘task force’. ROFL. Europeans will always be better at this. They seem to have different outlooks in life than overly brash ego-centric Americans. Tiger is not a team player in mindset. Never has been. And he played way too much for his pleasure, leading up to Ryder Cup. Phil is nearing senior tour status and his statistics reflect this. Reed is crazy talented, but rubs everyone the wrong way. Not to mention, most every American seemed to be hitting second shots from the rough. Maybe they should choose Team based on the course they’re playing.

    • Another Perspective

      Oct 2, 2018 at 3:40 pm

Interesting you bring ego into it. I’d argue it’s the ego, or rather chip on the shoulder, of the European squad’s collective ego that makes them care so much more about this even than the American side. American’s have never really cared about this event to the extent Europe has because they’ve never had that need to prove something that so clearly possesses the Euros and drive them to excel to the impressive degree that they do in the event. And that’s not a knock, it’s a simple fact. The American’s are just there to play some golf – the Euros are there to beat America. There’s just sooooo much more self and emotion tied up in it for them. And that’s always a recipe for success, really.

I’m sure the USA team members went there prior the the tourney even if they were not yet picked as a member or should have! I don’t mean just a week or a few days before ? As much money as they make one would think they could prepare by going over a few times just to test out the course ,weather, food ,time change ,etc.USA is such a primo. bunch! Tiger Woods is not the Woods of old! He played with a smug attitude and failed badly. He should retire ,he’s a has been!Reed appears to be a spoiled loser.. It wasn’t my fault, it was the other guys!!Phil was joke!!! Jorden faded away like melting ice cream. Dustin ,what was his problem? It seemed as if the most of the team was on a HangOver!!!.Ricky had skips in his thinking process.. Furyk is not the Captain type, a captain makes the call whether it’s popular or not because he is the one that gets the blame when it all said and done.

i”m glad someone is 2nd guessing why we failed to win the Ryder cup. Accepting defeat at the pro level should never be the status quo. Some may not like Reed’s no holds bar assessment, but you have to admire his courage to speak up. Bravo.

Apparently leaving your ego at the door applies to everyone but Patrick Reed. It’s really a bad look when the losers start back stabbing the captain and other players. If. I was Jordan I would want to play with my friend and they did OK the simple fact is they just got beat just play better.

    Oct 1, 2018 at 12:29 pm

Like it or not Reed says what he is thinking, right or wrong and who in here is bright enough to know anything about Ryder Cup play and the pressure of it. Furyk did the best he could with what he had and right or wrong he cannot be faulted regardless if he way a good or bad Captain. Sure he could have picked partners better and played the one bright light on the team, Tony F.

But the Euros just had a better team, the Home course and fans and that was a bigee. We will have a chance next time so relax and wait. I hope the next Captain uses his picks and pairing wisely and thinks hard about not picking Woods, Phil, or some other “experienced” over the hill player and goes with young Pros eager to win and not just give advice, face it these are all Pros. and what counsel do they need. And, the thing has turned into a money making circus anyway and with the Presidents Cup every other year has lost its real meaning.

  23. Tom

    Oct 1, 2018 at 12:22 pm

Earlier in the year Reed made a sarcastic dig about Spieth when he (Reed) didn’t get the ruling he was asking for, implying “I would have got it if my name was Spieth.” If I was Spieth I wouldn’t want to play with a guy like Reed either. No class airing out team room issues in the heat after a loss!!! Just like that A whole Mickelson throwing Watson under the bus….

  24. Gordon

    Oct 1, 2018 at 12:04 pm

The European team had made sure to play over 300 rounds between them on that course in Paris. Guess how many the US team had collectively accrued? Just 3 (three)!!

Of course the venue was set up to favour we Europeans, rather that the ultra-wide fairways played on the PGA tour when you can hit 320+ and it doesn’t really matter how accurate you are, as distance is everything. As far as I am aware, we don’t have any tradition of Long-Drive competitions, as we care more about planning a way to get round.

Finally, you have never seen any post-Ryder Cup losing teams, and there have been plenty, where the players dig out each other, or the Captain, after a loss, as per PM (2014) or Reed this year. We win as a team, but we also lose as a team.

  25. Harry Adam

    Oct 1, 2018 at 12:02 pm

Celebrating another European win, as I am, I’d just say to my US friends – do not be too hard on your captain, your team or any individual player. As you might well expect, Europe sets up the course to be very different from the typical PGA tour set up. More punishing rough, tighter fairways and just a higher premium on accuracy and less on pure length.
The problem for the PGA tour is the course set up which is the way it is, so that tv audiences get to see enormous drives and very few disasters. Bunkers are not really hazards – not often like the fairway bunker that McIlroy went into on the 18th.Took him 2 to get out and then into the drink. That’s a hazard, but on a regular tour event I suspect the set up would be from a bunker over the water to make it not only possible, but smooth hard pack sand raked with the back of the rake not the tines. All the talk about doing something about the ball and distance – not necessary – it’s easy to defend a course if you want to and make risk reward more interesting.

The 1st mistake Furyk made was picking Ducheambeau. The guy is just too weird, abrasive, awkward, unlikable, etc. You have to be able to communicate with your partner in any 2 man format and you could tell that his partners couldn’t communicate with him.
2nd and 3rd mistakes were Phil and Tiger. Yes they are 2 of the best in the history of the INDIVIDUAL game. But 2 of the worst in Ryder Cup history. They have to go with younger, hungrier guys. I know, I know, you have to have some veteran leadership. so go with guys like Zach Johnson or Matt Kuchar who have proven to be better team players (even if their current world rankings aren’t as high.

Egos aside I don’t think that was the problem, looking back its easy to say that was the issue when you want to point the finger. Reality is there way 25yds of rough that wasn’t trampled down. It didn’t suit the bomb and wedge game we see on the PGA tour. Justin Thomas was the only one of the team to play it in tournament conditions and he was the best of the US team.

So you get to play with the big cat and your complaining, was opportunity to do what other players haven’t been ankle to work tiger, they’re saying he shot like 85 on Saturday, so if he was with Jordan he would have played better. He mentions checking the ego but yet doesn’t want to play the role he was given, he won’t be on another team I bet, just shot himself in the foot.

One point that I saw on Twitter was that JT was 4-1 for the week, and he was the only player to play in the Euro tour event earlier in the year. These guys should have played the course much earlier to get used to the course. We weren’t prepared to play this course IMO. Phil never should have been on the team also, and that clearly showed.

Reed just simply played bad, awful is the TRUTH. The US team was unprepared for that type of course and conditions. Added bad pairings with certain players, it was really a good match. Add this the team should have had a rest period before they went over there. Goodbye Phil and Tiger.

What a tell when he wouldn’t wear sunglasses when it was clearly a team thing.

This is now the third team he has managed to alienate. At a certain point, as an adult, maybe he should ask himself whether the teams were the problem — or whether HE is the problem. Good luck on future US teams when no one is going to want to play with you. PS: you can’t shush the crowds when you’re in your pocket every other hole.

point being is. yes the terrible indeed. eat the f$%^ up and move on. think about what’s better in the next one. captain, picks, pairings, playings, opponent’s better playings, hostile fans. every single things. it’s not just Phil’s hook, Pat’s ego, Tiger’s jinx nor Furik’s strategey and leading “alone”

All the above comments are on-point. The Euro’s won because they had a team matched to the course, we didn’t. They don’t whine after getting beat here, we whine and point the blame to others when getting their asses kicked (Hear that Phil/Patrick) Even the PGA is to blame in some aspects, why do they put the courses out for bid ($$$) and select the highest bidder when the Euro’s put the Ryder Cup on courses they play annually. It’s all about the money to them so the whole system (at least every 4 years) is flawed….
NBC should be questioning their involvement given the poor ratings due to the US team’s crappy play… will sponsors weigh their future investment in ad space??

Why had only 6 players played the course before Ryder Cup week and only one play in the French Open? Ego’s still tend to get in the way. I was listening to PGA radio and the announcers had it right. They said in alternate shot the key is always to give your partner the best opportunity. Time and time again the Euro’s would put a drive in the rough and instead of hitting an iron and leaving it in the fairway, we would pull a driver and put it in the rough. How many holes were won with par in that format? How bad is it going to look now for Tiger and Phil to go play for $9,000,000 on pay per view after that performance. Pigs get slaughtered guys!

Patrick Reed clearly doesn’t care what those around him think about him which is fine but in the end he will find it has a negative impact on his potential success and whatever legacy he leaves behind. He will be an outcast where ever he goes on tour and may not be welcome on future Ryder Cup teams. At the same time it’s nice not seeing something sugar coated. Hide the truth all they want, the US isn’t looking at the real reasons we don’t win Ryder Cups. It’s my opinion that PGA players are coddled and whiny with egos that are part of the reason we don’t compete well in the Ryder Cup. To concerned about who they are paired with because of the ball a guy plays or who is friends with who. The Europeans don’t care. They want to win no matter what it takes. Furyk can meet with the committee all he wants to try to figure out what went wrong. Until they put ego aside and build teams suited to the venue they will be playing, NOTHING is going to change.

  43. Brad

Yes, Furyk is a terrible Ryder’s Cup captain, but Reed is just terrible. I wouldn’t want Reed to caddy for anyone on the Ryder Cup team let alone play on it.

Reed isn’t “Captain America”, he’s Major Whiner.

Nothing really matters because Europe kicked butt period….It had a lot to do with the 13th man, which was the course set up…everyone that plays the game has run into a course/hole that does not play well for him/her..add in 50,000 fans of your opponent and a few boogies are coming your way.

Always great when the guy who goes 1-2 and basically shot 7 or 8 over on Saturday is the first one to complain. Take care of yourself first before you start blaming other people. He’s pretty much answering why Jordan wouldn’t want to play with him. He’s a self-centered little baby.

For full disclosure, I’ve never liked Patrick Reed. It was a sad day for golf when he won The Masters. He’s just not a good ambassador. He’s the only person I’ve ever seen on Feherty that didn’t come off well. He doesn’t appear to have married well either. Is that mean-spirited? Sorry, but I haven’t seen the other WAGS comments yet. She may not be the only one.

Side note: Will Phil now apologize to Tom Watson? They were thrashed even worse this time in Europe. How are those pods working, Phil?Watson was right saying that the players have to play. Period. Our team didn’t play very well at all. It wasn’t Furyk fault either. I would leave the captains alone. Europe just played much better in general. And their fans were much better behaved than ours in the 2016 Ryder Cup. Ours were an embarrassment to the team and our country.

Am I a prude? Yeh, probably.

Spieth should grow up and tough it out with Reed and Reed needs to become a more likable person. Do you think everybody on the Euro team likes Poulter?? Prob not, but hes an American beating machine when it comes to the Ryder Cup– and thats all that matters for 3 days!

I feel that the team played lost, no direction, like they didn’t want to be there. That performance was just terrible, why not more 3 woods off the tees? Don’t guess it matters, they didn’t want to be there, DJ hit an iron off the tee with Ricky Friday afternoon and missed the fairway by 20 yards……………..just didn’t care??????????????

I don’t care for Reed, but he is right about Furyk. As a Ryder Cup player Furyk was gutless, and as the captain he was clueless.

Furyk was a terrible captain, he didn’t do anything, maybe he went for the really good seats, cause he sure wasn’t a captain!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure you would be better. Contact the PGA and see if they will let you Capt. next time. I am sure you will be a great winner. And please, explain why he was terrible.

Patrick Reed played like a 7 out there, spraying it.

Tiger played better than could be reasonably expected.

Furyk made the right call, and Reed can go sulk in a corner. For saying how good he is, all he had to do was show it just a little bit…

Always good when an article gets a lot of likes and dislikes equally…

Re: Captain America… it’s amazing how absolutely clueless he is with PR. I’m pretty sure he’s got some kind of Asperger’s… or maybe he’s just that narcisstic

For Starters, Tiger as much as I like him, and Phil – should be left at home. Their Ryder Cup record is atrocious. As for the others – I don’t think the Europeans are better golfers or do they have more spirit or anything else. It has more to do with the course selection and setup. This year’s course put an emphasis for the straight hitters and a detriment to our big hitters. It is a bit difficult hitting from the water and killing rough! And, of course, the super slow greens did not help the US putters. Player selection based on play on US courses are of little help when the Ryder Cup is played on an European course selected by the Europeans to emphasize their strengths – not the US strengths. It isn’t, or shouldn’t be a popularity contest. Start matching the our players to the course the Ryder Cup will be played on which includes the slower greens and penalizing rough and I believe we will see better results by the US teams.

Great golfers will adapt and be the best wherever they play.
Europe are by far a more coherent team.
In the same vein, USA always win the Presidents Cup because they in turn gell much better than The Rest Of The World

You didn’t have to be much of a people watcher to see there was something up with the US Team vibe. Apart from the two J’s, the rest looked like a still life from Madame Tussaud’s Funeral Parlor. Contrast the Euros who were showing ‘joie de vivre’ from day 1 , hour 1, even when getting stuffed in the opening 4 ball.

They really needed Kuchar and ZJ in the team as players. Wrong captain’s picks. Eldrick should never have been there, he doesn’t care about a team game, never has, he’s as selfish and lonely as they come

Sorry, have to disagree. Tiger is not who he once seemed to be (the person you described). Have you not been paying attention lately? Or are you one of those ‘once a hater, always a hater’ types?

      • Scheiss

        Oct 1, 2018 at 11:06 am

Clearly you have not been paying attention for the past 20 years. If he had cared he would have kept his pants zipped up and smiled to his wife everyday and kept his family together

Plus its pretty bad to question jim, he is the captain of the team and the pairing decision came from the whole team, not jim himself. As a cap he was more responsible for choosing the team rather than the pairing. US jst simply could not get comfortable with the climate and layout of the course.

His comment when he did not get relief from a rules official that he would have if his name were Jordan Speech really helped his cause. He is someone who should never be on a team. In college, he was the same way/

Are you really going to complain about having to play with Tiger Woods? I’m sure Tiger will take note of that slight as well.

  61. JP

    Oct 1, 2018 at 12:52 am

He should have owned up to dragging Tiger Woods down. Woods was playing great on day 1, but his playing partner that “was so successful in the Ryder Cup”, really earned the losses.

  62. David Toms

    Oct 1, 2018 at 12:26 am

All you had to do is hit a fairway Pee Wee Reed. You were terrible, as bad as a player can hit the ball. As a 3 handicap I could have won more holes for Tiger than you did.

You made Tiger worse, and he was playing great. Here’s to hoping you don’t make the team in 2020.

    • CaoNiMa

      Oct 1, 2018 at 2:09 am

No, there is no way you would have been able to hit those fairways under that pressure, you’re a 3 hcp on your wide American munis with no rough, ask Rory how that worked to his plan at Le Golf National lol

  63. ChipNRun

    Oct 1, 2018 at 12:19 am

Patrick Reed aside, I thought the USA pairings and slottings were a bit odd throughout the RC.

Yes, Tiger is back. That said, I would have rested him Saturday afternoon so he was fresher on Sunday. For someone in the latter days of mending, 36 holes a day in 50* weather can sap the energy. After a brave face the first couple of holes on Sunday, Tiger looked tired and flat.

Put Finau into Saturday PM and see what happened.

Then there’s the Furyk Factor. I respect him as a skilled and dedicated player, but not my idea of a team captain. I see him as a decent manager but a suspect motivator.

I think we all figured this out after his wifey, Justine, announced it on social media. Personally, I like Captain America. But this will only further isolate him and solidify his rep as the most hated man in golf on any continent.

Just keep winning, P-Reed. Now you know what it feels like to be Vijay Singh.

I think them splitting had a lot more to do with JT being there for the first time and JTs relationship and history with Jordan. Patrick just can’t help himself.

Finally, a comment that fits the situation. I knew before it was ever announced that JS & JT would be paired together. Friends since childhood, no way Furyk was going to keep them apart.

“For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice.”

“Every day, I saw ‘Leave your egos at the door,’” Reed said, of inspirational messages in the team room.

Guess he was trying to prove that last part by example.

This is one of the reasons P. Reed alienates people around him. He’s a whiny loudmouth. While he is right about not needing to like your playing partners, he’s forgetting about the ten other players Spieth could partner with who HE gets along with better! Even if P. Reed feels this way, there’s zero reason to go blabbing about it to the NYT while the European team is still spraying champagne. That’s super low class and will quickly evaporate any respect his American teammates and other pros have (or had) for him. His wife should be his confidant, I’m sure she can keep conversations private (Oops, forgot she has Twitter). This Ryder Cup stuff will be the topic of many of their conversations in the future, right after they figure out where their kids are going to college (UGA and Augusta State are off the list).

Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
