What’s changed? Brandel Chamblee explains why he now thinks Tiger Woods can win another major

Published

on

Often regarded as a “Tiger hater,” Brandel Chamblee told our Johnny Wunder on the Gear Dive podcast that his is, in fact, a huge Tiger Woods fan and always has been.

If you caught any of Chamblee’s remarks on the Golf Channel after Woods’ win at the Tour Championship, you know the analyst was plenty eloquent and complementary of the 80-time PGA Tour winner and what he achieved.

“Dan [Hicks, on NBC] was just alluding to this was the most improbable comeback in the history of sports, for a lot of different reasons. We know his injuries. He came back from emotional and psychological toil the likes of which nobody has ever been hit with in the game of golf.

“He gives the impression of somebody who’s purified by golf, that he’s gone through these sad realities of life. He’s gone through the surgeries and the scrutiny. And he’s come out the other end and he just wants to play the game right.”

Chamblee spoke further about Woods and the 14-time major champion’s latest victory on the Gear Dive. The full 50-minute interview is well worth a listen, as Chamblee discusses modern instruction, the most important recent invention in golf teaching technology, what’s in his bag, and much more–but here are a few of his best Tiger Woods takes.

Commenting on the magnitude of Woods win for the golfer’s career, Chamblee said, “It sort of got this historical freight train back on the tracks. Everything is on the table. It’s possible he could win more majors. It’s possible he could get to 90 wins…he looks healthy. He’s pain free.”

“I’m far more convinced with what he did this week than what he did at the PGA Championship. At the PGA, the golf course was really soft and that allowed him to miss fairways…but ever since the PGA…he’s been a much, much better driver of the golf ball. All of a sudden, that makes major championships a possibility for him.”

“In my opinion, he’s the greatest player who’s ever played. Nobody has ever played golf like him. But he didn’t just beat his competitors…he defeated his demons. That’s what made it so compelling. We’re all familiar with his issues. Most of relate to most of them…we’re all fixated on them..We know it slowed his career down…he was knocked off the highest pedestal. To re-establish his reputation as a leader in the game…as a an intimidating player…it went a long way toward becoming the alpha male again in the game of golf.”

Chamblee had this to say about his reputation as a critic of Tiger Woods.

“I’m a huge Tiger fan. Always have been. I love watching the game played at the level he’s played it. He’s the best who’s ever played it.”

And he said this about Woods process of tearing down and rebuilding his golf swing multiple times.

“To me, that’s the craziest thing in the history of sports. No athlete gets to a position where they dominate, they absolutely emasculate their competition, and they’re consistent as well…nobody gets there and then abandons the technique that they used to get there. Nobody.”

“I started working at the Golf Channel in 2004. He was in the middle of a swing change. He was changing the golf swing that he used to win four majors in a row…Imagine you’re me. You’re sitting in that chair. He’s in a down year in 2004. He’s changing his golf swing. What are you going to say? This is a good idea? I like the changes he’s working on? He’s trying to get better? It makes sense to me? Hell no, you’re not going to say any of that! That’s ridiculous…the craziest thing in the history of sports.”

Great stuff. Check out the full podcast on SoundCloud below, or click here to listen on iTunes!

Bandwagon a$$clown. Either you believe he will win a major again or you don’t. How many skeptics said he’ll never win again period. Where are THEY now (oh yeah, trying to tell everyone they never doubted Tiger would win again).

I’d be honestly shocked if Tiger didn’t pull out a major in ’19.

Chamblee has been a Tiger guy for as long as I can remember. People can’t differentiate Chamblee being honest about Tigers game and being a “hater”

The guy does his homework is fairly well spoken his voice doesnt make me want to stick ice picks in my ears but it is well known that he is a world class Tiger hater. I just think he can see what is about to happen now that its clear that Tiger is about to go on a tear and make even more history. So he is trying to save some face and keep his place at the golf analyst table. I would have more respect for him if he came out and said he was wrong to ever doubt Tiger. I could maybe forgive him if he said that he has wished for Tiger to fail out of jealousy and done all he could to try and make himself look like he is somehow qualified to make any type of judgment on Tigers game. Truth is he is not and has never been anywhere near qualified to even speak to Tigers ability now or in the past. Brandal had a small carrer on the tour and as such deserves some respect. He by no means was ever good enough to even comment on Tigers game when alone in his car much less behind a camera for the masses to see. So I wont cut him any slack as long as he is trying to backpedal I will call him out for it. Be a man stick to your past comments and tone and let the cards fall where they may.

Don’t be silly. With Tigers back and swing like it was last year, he would have never won again on tour, which is what Chamblee said. Once he started playing pain-free Chamblee pointed out what his problem was which was keeping him from winning. Tigers swing has evolved over the year and he has found a driver swing to complement his iron swing and is once again among the best players on tour.

I Call BS on Chamblee saying he has ALWAYS been a Tiger fan.

Chamblee has ALWAYS been the biggest Tiger fan boy. There are countless videos/proof of his fondness for Tiger Woods when he first saw him as a 16 year old with Freddie Couples! FACT. that said, Chamblee “research” and “swing analysis” is an absolute exploitation and plagiarism of Wayne Defranseco. FACT

Johnny Miller returns to the airwaves on Real Golf Talk, Callaway’s new podcast

Published

on

Johnny Miller is back sharing his opinions on the game on Callaway’s new podcast: Real Golf Talk, which aired its first episode today (listen here on Soundcloud).

The longtime NBC golf announcer retired from broadcasting earlier this year, but Miller now features alongside avid golfer and television host Chris Harrison on the podcast, which will air six episodes in 2019 and eight in future seasons.

Speaking on the opportunity to work alongside Johnny Miller on the podcast, co-host Chris Harrison stated

“Johnny Miller was a legend on the course and in the TV booth there was no equal. I know he’s got more to say on the world of golf and the world in general. There’s no chance I’m missing the opportunity to sit next to him and hear what he has to say.”

Miller (who, sidebar, will play all Callaway products) said this

“I am proud be returning to Callaway and working with the company’s incredible team on some exciting new projects. I’ve had so many great experiences with the company, from playing their equipment to working with Mr. Callaway and so many amazing people over the years. It feels like a homecoming for me, and I think golf fans will really enjoy what we have coming, starting with our new Real Golf Talk podcast.”

Real Golf Talk with Johnny Miller is a part of the Callaway Podcast Network and is available on Apple, Spotify, and Soundcloud.
