Tiger Woods says he would put himself on the all-time Mount Rushmore of Golf

Published

on

Who’s on your “Mount Rushmore” of golf?

For Tiger, apparently, it’s Snead (Sam), Jones (Bobby), Nicklaus (Jack), and “me” (Tiger Woods). He put himself on the Mount Rushmore of golf! Watch the video below…

It’s basically impossible to argue with him here; 14 majors and now 80 wins. Who could you even replace Woods with… Arnie? Ben Hogan? Both possibilities. But certainly Tiger has the better resume when it comes to victories.

What makes this video so great though is that there are so few athletes in all of sports who have the confidence (arrogance?) to put themselves on a list like this. Michael Jordan would definitely put himself on the Mount Rushmore of basketball, and surely Joe Namath would put himself on the Mount Rushmore of football. But in golf where respecting tradition is so important, it’s shocking to hear a statement like this… in the absolute best way possible for Team USA ahead of the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Never have the words “me” been so intimidating. Good luck, Europe, you’re gonna need it.

Seems there are a lot of WRXrs out there who’ve never made any mistakes. I’m no Tiger fan boy, but last i checked this was the Mt. Rushmore of GOLF… not being a husband, or avoiding addiction, or tipping.

If you had a time machine, and go pick up the top 20 golfers in history to play a tournament, who you picking over tiger woods if you have to bet your house on it? Jack Nicklaus, MAYBE. Anyone else? Good luck keeping your house.

    1) Jack Nicklaus
    2) Tiger Woods
    3) Arnold Palmer
    4) Annika Sorenstam

No Arnie huh? Well it’s his opinion which is pretty good of himself. However, I would leave Tiger off because his life’s personal antics far outweigh his sports accomplishments. Just my opinion

It’s the mount rushmore of golf… not being an alter boy.

Tiger would clearly belong on any Mount Rushmore if golf. No debate. But all these shots at his lack of humility are silly without any context. If it wasn’t a situation where one could gracefully take the obvious “that’s not for me to decide,” chuckle, and move on approach, what else was he supposed to say?

Looks like he has a big impression of himself. He was great at Golf, but as a person he stinks. Maybe he could also have a Mt. Rushmore of womanizing and family ruining also.

Based on majors, top 4 Americans are Nicklaus (18), Woods (14), Hagen (11), and Hogan (9).

There is nothing worse than false humility. I would rather hear a player boast about his accomplishments than give that fake gosh golly I am just playing and have no opinion on my greatness when that greatness has been well established. Of course Tiger should be on Mt Rushmore and you could easily make the argument he should be the first one up there and worst case scenario second.

How long are your arms Tiger ? Careful you might bruise your back patting yourself . What a ignorant statement to make ya you won after five years of nonsense, good for you but really man talk about stuck on yourself. You even got the wonder boy Brandel on your side now that’s worth another spot on the hill. It’s a shame that it’s always about you good or bad .

I hoped that society had progressed, these comments prove me wrong. I especially enjoy the comments regarding “humility” and trying to fault a man for simply being honest. Just check the record books, if he’s not #1, he’s #2 & the last I checked there were 4 on Mount Rushmore. No matter what you want to say, he belongs on it, period.

Yeah, I’ve got no problem with Tiger putting himself on the list. I do have a problem with him leaving Arnie off. I made my list before I read the article, and it’s the same as yours. Snead or Hogan are close to a toss up, but Arnie has to be on it.

I totally agree with the 2nd best of all-time. I’d take Snead over Hogan for the same reason I’d take Federer over Nadal, but that one is super close. How does one argue with Bobby Jones? He won the Grand Slam, brought serious golf to the US, and created the Masters.

Jack, Tiger and Bobby Jones are a given IMO. The fourth one is harder but I’d have to give the nod to Bantam Ben Hogan. It would be just as easy to make a case for Arnie, Snead, Player or Trevino, maybe even Phil.

They’ve discused chiseling more faces on Rushmore.

Certainly, you can have more golfers on a Golf Rushmore …

Tiger? By the record books, yes, and then the comeback, yes – the shear determination…

Put Hogan and Palmer on it, too.

  24. Greg V

    Sep 25, 2018 at 4:00 pm

That is a pretty good list, and I sure wouldn’t argue against it. One guy had an unbelievable streak of 8 years in national championships, winning 7. One guy played great his whole life, and compiled more wins than anyone but Tiger. And then you have the two guys who are in the argument for GOAT.

‘course, there was a guy who won 6 Open Championships and 1 US Open, and came back from tuberculosis to win the last couple. He might bet to differ.

  25. Gmatt

    Sep 25, 2018 at 4:00 pm

Shouldn’t character be a part of this? If by sheer numbers, sure no question he belongs but if you look at quality of character he wouldn’t even make the foothills.

Again to agree with the above commenter… his humility sure went from one side of the scale to the other in a few short months… I guess El Tigre is back to being the self righteous pompous person he was before his new found humility

    • Dave

      Sep 25, 2018 at 4:15 pm

      Glad you’re perfect!

    • really?

      Sep 25, 2018 at 5:10 pm

might want to pump the brakes and try to consider all of the charitable work he’s done before you weight and measure him. Seriously, google the Tiger Woods foundation and really see if cheating on his wife and developing an opiate addiction outweighs all the lives he’s had a positive impact on. I realize that may be asking too much of someone like yourself, but please give it good ole college try.

And if you are being realistic, the golfer with the 2nd most majors and 2nd most PGA Tour wins ever absolutely should be on there. What you are upset about is the fact that he said it instead of giving some fake answer

  26. Christian

    Sep 25, 2018 at 3:55 pm

It’s too bad this Mount Rushmore of golf doesn’t include humility as one of the criteria.

    • huh

      Sep 25, 2018 at 5:21 pm

Oh, so you wanted a fake answer instead of a correct answer.

    • Johnny Penso

      Sep 25, 2018 at 6:04 pm

In all fairness, if Tiger had put 3 other golfers up there ahead of him, it would be false humility and we’d all know it. The only discussion around Tiger is whether he’s number 1 or number 2, Tiger knows this and the world knows this. No one in their right mind ranks him any lower than that. Put it another way, if you asked Jack the same question, I have zero doubt that he would put himself on that Mount Rushmore of golf because he knows no one would believe he was sincere if he didn’t.

  27. Tom

    Sep 25, 2018 at 3:08 pm

Jack won 18 Majors, Tiger has won 14….that’s all ya need to know!

    • George

      Sep 25, 2018 at 3:32 pm

So the only thing that counts in professional golf are majors?

        Yes

        • ~j~

          Sep 26, 2018 at 9:34 am

Stupid. The argument that majors say it all is absurd. It’s a tournament like any other with a better than ‘average’ field. So what.

          • Paulie

            Sep 26, 2018 at 11:42 am

Majors are all that matters. You think Tiger wouldn’t trade 50 regular wins for 5 more Majors? Put the pipe down then.

      • hwt

        Sep 25, 2018 at 5:13 pm

2nd all time in wins and majors isn’t good enough for you George?

        • George

          Sep 25, 2018 at 5:29 pm

hwt, it is totally acceptable by me. IMO he is the GOAT he is the reason I golf today. I could not imagine my life without golf.

    • Ryan

      Sep 25, 2018 at 3:34 pm

Jack won 18 by the time he was 46. Tiger won his 14th major at 32. He’ll win more majors. Not sure if its 1 or 5 but he’ll win another, with an outside challenge at 18.

      • ht

        Sep 25, 2018 at 5:11 pm

He also is 3 wins away from the all time PGA tour wins record. What are people thinking?

  28. BMoney

    Sep 25, 2018 at 2:54 pm

I’m certainly not saying he doesn’t belong, but this just a bad move. Let everyone else praise you. “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.”

That being said, the video was pretty short and I felt like there was a lot more. I don’t want to take it out of context.

    • Jordan R. Anderson

      Sep 25, 2018 at 3:29 pm

When you’re one of the two best of all time, without question, it’s ok to put yourself on a mount Rushmore.

    • Steve

      Sep 26, 2018 at 11:35 am

No, it’s not a “bad move” at all. Everyone that knows ANYTHING about golf knows that he’s 1 of the top 2 players of all time. He’d sound like a complete moron if he left himself off the list. Humility is severely overrated in this case.

    • Jack Nash

      Sep 26, 2018 at 11:42 am

“Let everyone else praise you”. Have you been watching Golf Channel the last 10 years?

  29. Jordan R. Anderson

    Sep 25, 2018 at 2:49 pm

I would find a way to put Arnie on, but I wouldn’t take Tiger off to do it. To me Tiger and Jack are mortal locks, and the other two are arguable with others, aside from maybe arnie.

    • BombAndGouge

      Sep 25, 2018 at 4:13 pm

I would agree with this. Tiger and Jack are locks. The other two spots are debatable between 6-8 guys. Arnie probably also belongs in my opinion.

But those weren’t the only talking points over the last week in the golfing world. Here’s a look at some things you may have missed, and some of the quirkier moments from the world of golf dished out in the Twittersphere.

Exploring Ireland: Where to golf, drink and stay on the Emerald Isle. Pt. 2. Old Tom Morris Links, Donegal

Published

on

In these series of articles, I will be taking you around the Emerald Isle providing you with great golf courses to visit in some of the loveliest spots in Ireland. I’ll also be highlighting the best and most authentic Irish bars in these spots, as well as places to stay, eat and how to get there. Whether you’re taking a golfing holiday to Ireland in 2019 or are interested in doing so sometime in the future, I’ll make sure to let you in on the best places to spend your time.

In Part One of our Exploring Ireland series, we focused on County Wicklow and showcased Woodbrook Golf Club. Now it’s time for Part Two, and we’re taking a trip to the far northwest corner of the island, and into County Donegal.

While it may not be the most accessible destination, Donegal is an absolute must for anyone traveling to Ireland. Voted number one on The National Geographic Traveler’s ‘cool list’ for 2017, Donegal is like no place you’ve ever seen. Full of breathtaking beaches, incredible walking trails, cosy pubs and of course, excellent golf courses, you’re guaranteed to have a great time here.

Old Tom Morris Links, Donegal

@Rosapenna1893

My pick for the top golf course to visit in the county is the Old Tom Morris Links, situated within the Rosapenna Hotel and Golf Resort.

In 1891, while a guest of Lord Leitrim, Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews decided to visit Donegal, and in typical Tom Morris fashion, he believed that it was the ideal location to build a championship course. What Morris created was a course with wide rolling fairways and magnificent greens that have stood the test of time.

@Rosapenna1893

The course was renovated twice before a new Strand Nine opened in 2009 which now plays as the front nine of the Old Tom Morris Links. The addition gives the course a wonderful mix of a traditional and modern links feel.

The challenging course plays over 6,900 yards from the back tees, and only offers up the relief of three par-fives. The challenge can also become even more daunting should the wind blow, and being situated along “The Wild Atlantic Way,” you should expect nothing less.

@EIGTravel

While you will no doubt enjoy the stern test and the natural feel of the golf course, visitors will have even more to look forward to should they take the trip here. The course runs along Tramore beach overlooking Sheephaven Bay and offers up sensational views no matter what hole you are on during your round.

The rates to play 18 holes at the Old Tom Morris Links begin at $40 in winter, and $60 during the summer months.

Food & Drink – The Olde Glen Bar, Carrigart

@oldeglenbar

A 10-minute drive from the course will take you to The Olde Glen Bar a few minutes from Carrigart, which Ulster’s very own Hollywood star and golf fan Jamie Dornan (The Fall, 50 Shades of Grey) called the “best bar in the world.”

The bar first opened in 1768, making it one of the oldest bars in Donegal. The Olde Glen Bar has kept its very traditional feel, and when you get there, you will feel like you’ve been transported back in time. Wooden floors, big open-lit fires, low ceilings and door frames add to the charm of this little bar where there is always something going on.

@oldeglenbar

There is live traditional music playing in the bar every weekend, and along with the music, The Olde Glen Bar boasts an excellent craft beer, whiskey and gin selection. The bar prides itself on its Kinnegar beer, brewed just up the road, and it’s well worth a try if Guinness isn’t your thing.

The bar also features a highly acclaimed restaurant, offering up dishes such as seatrout, venison, supreme of chicken and plenty of other delights.

@oldeglenbar

Where To Stay

The obvious choice is the Rosapenna Hotel and Golf Resort itself. This luxury establishment will cater to all your needs and is the ideal place to stay when in the area if you have the money to splash out. A classic double room will set you back around $200 a night, or you can go for the stay and play option which provides you with two nights bed, and breakfast along with a round of golf at both the Old Tom Morris and the Sandy Hills Links for around $300 per person.

If you’re looking for somewhere less expensive or more traditional, then there are plenty of cottages in the area that will add even more character to your adventure. Here’s what you can expect should you wish to stay in an Irish cottage in the area, and it will give you a feel for true Irish life out on the Atlantic Ocean.

@ShivonSoap

Donegal has lots to offer should you manage to pull yourself away from the course or the bar. Fishing, walking trails, surfing and scuba diving are all favorite activities to do while visiting Donegal. One must visit, however, is Glenveagh National Park, which is a nature reserve with beautiful scenery of mountains, lakes and woodlands. The highlight of the park though has to be Glenveagh Castle, built in 1870.

How To Get There

The lack of quality public transport in the area makes it a little trickier than other spots to get to, but if you’re driving, then there’s no issue at all. The Old Tom Morris Links is a 3 hrs 30mins drive from Dublin City Centre, 4hrs 10mins from Galway City Centre, and 1hr 15mins from Derry City Centre. If you happen to be flying into Donegal Airport, then it will take you around an hour to get to the area.

Tweets of the Week: Best golf posts from Twitter over the last week

Published

Jon Rahm triumphed in the Bahamas, Cameron Smith got the job done down under, and Kurt Kitayama was victorious in Mauritius, but there were plenty more talking points in the golfing world over the past week. Here’s a look at some things you may have missed, and some of the quirkier moments from the world of golf dished out in the Twittersphere.

Rose and Stenson’s Wardrobe Mishap

They proved how well they could perform together when they excelled at Le Golf National in September, but the European pair may have been a little too in sync on the opening day of the Hero World Challenge…

Focus like Chikkarangappa

Chikkarangappa lost his cool on the 16th hole in Mauritius over the weekend, but the Indian showed that it would take more than a ridiculously loud phone going off on his downswing to put him off his stride.

Tiger Fever

It’s reassuring to know that it isn’t just us humans who are obsessed with the 14-time major champ.

Dustin’s Stats

Another decent season for DJ then…

Tommy Fleetwood’s Perfect Solution

Controversy surrounded the result of the mega boxing match between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder over the weekend. The consensus was that Fury had won the fight, but when the contest was declared a draw, golfs very own Tommy Fleetwood came up with the only reasonable solution to decide the winner.
