GolfWRX Forum Thread of the Day: “How do you handle punched or aerated greens?”
With Fall right around the corner, courses around the country are beginning to aerate their greens. In today’s GolfWRX Forum Thread of the Day our members discuss how their game changes, and when/if to play.
Here are a few comments from the forum, but make sure to check the whole thing out in the link below.
- larrybud: “Never walked off, but you have to go in with the mentality that you will miss a bunch of putts, and that that’s not your fault. My cap always go up 2 shots or so this time of year.”
- bluefishercat: “It’s a good excuse for bad putting”
- golfgirlrobin: “I don’t really mind punched greens; it’s just part of the deal. Hit it a little harder and aim for the middle.”
Check out the full forum thread here for more discussion.

From the Forums: How are you liking TaylorMade’s Qi10 fairway woods?
In our forums, our members have been discussing TaylorMade’s new Qi10 fairway woods. WRXer ‘ace036’ plans on testing them in the next few weeks, saying: “from how they look from address and frame the ball is much more appealing to my eye versus my current Paradym fairway woods.” And our members have been sharing their positive feedback in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Edwardsr: “I got fit into the Qi10 core model with Ventus TR Black 8X and it’s absolutely amazing for me.During the fitting with my 12-15 swings with it, it was the most efficient combo I’ve ever tested, tons of 1.48 smash and 3 or 4 1.49 smash (which I don’t think I’ve ever gotten on 3 wood on a launch monitor).”
- MiloMalt: “No complaints and so far only high praise for my Qi10 Tour 3 and 5 wood. I’m getting great numbers and a nice penetrating ball flight with great height whereas with my old TSi2 4 wood it was spinny and ballooning and short because of that.”
- courcy75: “The Qi10 Tour 3 wood I just put in play has been outstanding for me. Finally found something I like as much as the 07 burner tp.”

From the Forums: Should I play a 3-wood or 5-wood?
In our forums, our members have been discussing 3-woods, 5-woods and bag setups. WRXer ‘Cole Fleming’ is currently unsure of his setup, and reached out to fellow members, saying:
“Thoughts on people playing 3 vs 5-wood? I have a high SS 118 with driver 280s + carry. I really never use my 3-wood now as my course doesn’t really have the need unless I move to the back tees. I usually carry it about 260+. I’m ultimately looking for something easier to hit and maybe start trying to use it off the tee some to keep me out of trouble.
I also play a 7-wood. Love it so don’t want them to be to0 close. Ive never even considered or looked at a 5-wood. I have a fitting today so I’m sure I could test them, but wanted somewhat of an idea going into it to tell the fitter so I’m not swinging so many clubs.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the matter, as well as mentioning what has worked best for their game.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- pu_golf88: “I’m dropping the 3 wood this year for a 5 wood. I hit my drivers a similar distance as you and find that my 3 wood isn’t a fairway finder, I really only use it if there’s a dogleg where a driver would go thru where I want to land the ball. I think a 5 wood goes far enough to use it as a fairway finder off the tee when I want more distance than hitting my 3 driving iron.”
- T626G: “I myself have decided to try a 5-wood. Never really had much luck or need with a 3-wood. Should be easier to hit. I’m going to cut it down a 1/2″ just to help control it and swing easier.”
- jedc: “Adjustable 5-wood turned down to 4-wood loft (and open looking face is nice). I had a fitting last month and really liked the PXG Black Ops 5-wood.”

Pretend you are back in the 1920s where “stymie” was still the game on the greens…. slightly loft your putts over the plugs. I have a Wilson 8802 blade that was bent up, loft increased to 10º and back of sole ground down. Works perfectly.

I go to another course or hit the driving range. Not paying good money to play freshly aerated greens.

i don’t play punched greens…why spend money for inferior play. More importantly punching greens should be a thing of the past…new technology should fix this age old issue.

I handle them by dying a little inside.
Nah, I just play them and know that sometimes the putts aren’t going to do what I think their going to do.

I don’t usually care it’s just something you gotta deal with twice a year or so only thing would be nice if they gave us a break on the green fees while the greens are subpar. Some places who know what they are doing have plenty of sand filling the holes where it’s not bad at all. Other places it’s like putting on the board like you hang your tools on.

Find something else to do until the greens are healed.

Based on the above photo I would not play – might wait a couple of days (or look to play somewhere else). From a greenskeeper’s perspective, should play be allowed on the greens in the above photo?

No they don’t that’s like saying 1 club length tee thru thru the green, same for everybody. That’s got to be the worst saying in golf. But I do agree shut up and play or stay home and do yard work.

Shut up and play, everyone has the same conditions.
