Jim Furyk’s Ryder Cup Captain’s Picks are in…

Published

on

In what was a foregone conclusion at this point, Jim Furyk has announced Tiger Woods, Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson as 3-of-his-4 Captain’s Picks for the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris.

Here’s Phil’s feelings — ahem, *pheelings* — on being picked…

Also, Furyk announced additional Vice Captains, probably to fill-in for the coaching duties of Tiger since he’ll be playing in the event himself. Furyk added David Duval, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar as Vice Captains, joining DLIII and Steve Stricker on the squad.

Now, onto the real question; who will be the fourth captain’s pick? It certainly seems that Tony Finau has made a great case for himself. He’s currently 4th in the FedExCup standings, finished 5th at the 2018 U.S. Open, T9 at the Open Championship, and has finished second and T4 in the first two FedExCup Playoff events, respectively.

Another popular name being thrown around is Patrick Cantlay. He won the Shriners Open all the way back in November of the 2017-2018 season, has 7 top-10s and 14 top-25s, and currently ranks 12th on the FedExCup points list.

Who would you take as the fourth pick?

    Finau’s gotta get it!

    Finau.

Winning is over-rated. So many guys can win every given week. Winning is almost a fluke. (Unless you’re Tiger or Phil.) Finau has shown talent and consistency. These bode well for a good Ryder Cup performance.

Everyone talks about Jack’s 18 professional majors, but they almost never bring up the 20 second place finishes in majors. That guy was ALWAYS around the top of the leaderboard when it mattered. Finau has been consistently at the top, despite not having won.

They’re all just going to Paris on holiday. Their WAGS and families love it. They know they can’t beat the Euros there.

These are well respected players who will give these new guys a boost of confidence they will need!

DeChambeau was a no brainer. He’s young, big, strong, long, nearly unshakable and red hot!

Phil is always dangerous in match play and stirs a crowd. I was originally against putting him on the team but he WANTS it and that counts for a lot! He enjoys the crowds and the atmosphere as much as anyone on earth.

Tiger is fast becoming one of the best players in the world again. Truthfully, I might take him over all but about 3 players today.

Those 3 were the best possible picks he could make.

Finau is also a no brainer. Just make the pick! He is one of the longest, most consistent young players in the game. He would be an extremely exciting match play player and will likely make the team for years to come. BTW, remember the twisted ankle at the Masters? He tough too.

Great! Another Ryder Cup team featuring Woods, Mickelson & Furyk. Have these 3 ever won a Ryder Cup together? There’s too much young talent to keep doing this. Thankfully Furyk won’t be hitting any shots.

The US is doomed. Eldrick won’t be able to resist hitting the brothels in Paris. Just as funny is the word for woman if FILLE in French. Well the US has already got its own Phil 🙂

Maybe Phil and Tiger can cash in and launch their circus act early in Paris. How do you say pay-per-view in French?

    Finau’s gotta be the easy 4th pick…

Which Air Jordan model should Nike release as a golf shoe next?

Published

on

According to GolfMagic, Nike’s Air Jordan III golf shoe took off from the foul line and soared right out of stock.

Per the site: “Nike launched this new model back in February… but you’ll do very well to get your hands on either them right now as they have sold out on Nike’s website. However, a Nike spokesperson has since commented saying “more is on the way.”

Grammar aside, this is interesting.

Now, it wasn’t long ago that all golf shoes looked like this.

And with all due respect to the Etonic Dri-Lite of yore, and giving wide berth to the traditionalists in the golf footwear space, the transition to sneaker-style golf shoes is cool, isn’t it? I mean, even if you’re monumentally swagger impaired like myself and could never pull the “Js on the fairways” look off, it’s intriguing, no?

With that in mind, and recognizing the demand for the 3s, I thought it’d be interesting to consider what the next Jordan golf shoe ought to be.

Here are my finalists for the next wide release (yes, I know Nike made Ray Allen custom 11s and MJ has had a few customs). Many of these are new colorways of classic (OG) models. I’ve tried for a range of styles and picks from across the Jordan timeline. Images via the excellent catalogue on the Jordan website.

Looks like Tiger is exploring some innovative solutions to his putting woes…

Published

on

Tiger Woods was 39th in strokes gained: putting in 2018. Historically an excellent putter, Woods was hot-and-cold with the flatstick, even benching his soulmate Scotty Cameron Newport 2.

It looks like Woods may have an ace in the hole for the upcoming season, however, with respect to his green reading and putt sinking. Check out this video posted to his Instagram from the Tiger Woods Invitational on the Monterey Peninsula earlier this week.

Good thing the USGA is restricting the use of green-reading devices and technologies, because this kid looks close to cracking the eternal mystery of the perfect marriage of line and speed for every putt.

Cool stuff, though, isn’t it? It’s also cool to see Tiger so genuinely excited about his “mentee.”

We all know the story of how, after September 11, Woods re-evaluated his charitable endeavors and began to conceive of the Tiger Woods Learning Center. He’s spoken passionately about the students who have made their way through the various programs in the past, and there’s no doubt he cares deeply about the TGR Foundation’s efforts, but seeing a thin slice of that reality is awesome.
