Mitsubishi Diamana WB: Club Junkie takes a technology deep dive
Earlier this week, Mitsubishi announced the return of its iconic Whiteboard profile with the new Diamana WB shaft.
In our launch story, we offered a rundown of the key technology in the new WB — 80-ton Dialead pitch fiber, Aerospace-grade MR70 carbon fiber, Consistent Feel Design, and the Xlink Tech Resin System. To go deeper, however, we enlisted our Resident Club Junkie and bona fide shaft nut, Brian Knudson, to track down someone from Mitsubishi at the PGA Show. Fortunately, Mitsubishi’s Director of Global Aftermarket Sales, Jonathan Alongi, was on hand to answer all of BK’s questions.
Check out their discussion about the new WB, as well as the 20th anniversary of the original design, in the video above — time stamps of key points below, including a definitive answer as to how the surfboard graphic ended up on the original Whiteboard in 2004!
- :40 – Mitsubishi Japan expands to the U.S. in 2004
- :50 – “The shaft that set the standard”
- 1:12 – “The ‘board is back”
- 1:45 – WB or Whiteboard? Or both?
- 1:55 – The first iteration of the sixth generation of Diamana
- 2:10 – Incorporating key technology from a 20-year journey
- 3:10 – Modifying the tip section for more ball speed
- 3:50 – Delivering ball speed in a low-launch, low-spin shaft
- 4:20 – Drilling down on the shaft profile compared to the original Whiteboard
- 5:00 – The most impressive element of the new WB
- 5:30 – Butt, mid, tip specifications
- 6:00 – WB’s iconic graphics and the Diamana legacy — flowers, surfboard, numbering system
- 8:15 – An abundance of available weights and flexes
- 8:55 – More players going lightweight

I am intrigued by the Edel putters and the fitting process. I think that their current models are fairly tested but I may wait 1-2 years and maybe they will bring out new series. I found a fitter close to me but in Europe you are close to 500 bugs for their putters – something I will need to get my head around first. However it is a fair investment if you play a custom fitted putter for next 10 years and compare it to a price and life cycle of a driver. Till then I will game the Odyssey Tank #7 with its counter balanced grip and heavy head – contrary to what Edel proposes.

He should tell the players what he did before seeing the result, so he wouldn’t manipulate players brain. All the connections parts won’t make the end products the same. Who calibrate the laser? No set up check? No grip check? No eye dominant check? There are more to it in putting…

Really enjoyed that…..interested to know how Dave Edel would fit someone like me, with a more “arc-y” stroke, i.e., not as “linear” as shown in the video. His concepts about going to lighter heads was really interesting and in the opposite direction of modern trends. Have to admit, it made sense, however. can’t say I am putting better with a heavier head despite being fitted for it.

What is he using to show allignement, is that just a laser and mirror on the putter face? Any links if it’s something packaged to buy?

I’m wondering the same thing! I want

That was my guess. Maybe he has say 10 putters, but only 5 models, and 5 have a mirror and the other 5 are same heads but without the mirror maybe?
Also his thoughts on lower weighted heads or counterbalancing (but still not adding extra weight to the head to change overall head weight) makes a lot of sense for “me” especially on shorter putts with a heavier head and having be kind of a choppy stroke due to my putter head being maybe to heavy.
I just put a Super Stroke GT 1.0 on my Odyssey #7s two days ago cuz I like the shape of the grip BUT also cuz without the counter weight it’s only a 50G grip and I figured that’d make the head feel heavier and that’s what I wanted. But now I’m psyched to try it with the 50G counterbalance weight in it now. I had zero intention of using the counter weight before this video.

Anyone know anything about the putter system he was talking about for like $300-400?

I have the Super Stroke GT 1.0 grip on my Anser and it makes sense to have the weight in. Try both and you will be surprised. I now play the Odyssey Tank with counter balanced grip and the heavy head and grip play nicely together
