Charles Howell III on why he finds the GolfWRX forums “very beneficial”

Published

on

While we’ve seen a few Tour pros in the GolfWRX forums, rumor has persisted for years that Charles Howell III, one of the biggest gearheads in the professional ranks, frequents our fair forums.

Naturally, Johnny Wunder led off his Gear Dive podcast with CH III by asking the golfer if he visits the site.

Here’s what he had to say.

“I first heard about GolfWRX…quite a while ago…I would kind of go on there not only for…looking around, but for research and information.”

“Playing golf on the PGA Tour, we’re fortunate that we have access to a lot of different manufacturers…but if I want to know what’s the best shaft for, let’s say, higher launch and low spin, it’s hard to find an unbiased view…but yet on GolfWRX, you have a lot of users and people that have tested them and done reviews, etc. And I’ve found that very beneficial.”

“We all have the common bond that we love golf, and we just want to play better golf, I just happen to be fortunate enough that this is what I do for a living, so I’m highly motivated to find any edge I can get…through GolfWRX, I was able to read and study a lot [particularly in] the shafts area…I found that very beneficial.”

Asked whether he posts at all, Howell said,

“No. I would end up laying in bed at night either arguing or putting my two cents where they don’t belong…there’s people out there that are a lot smarter on these topics than I am, so I’m better off just trying to learn something.”

How cool is that, GolfWRX members? And the humility! I imagine CH III’s kung-fu is pretty darn good. But yeah, Charles Howell III: he’s just like us (minus the whole being a PGA Tour pro thing).

You’ll want to give Johnny’s full talk with Howell a listen. He candidly discusses the equipment he’s played throughout his year and offers an honest assessment of his career and the move to PXG that you have to hear.

    Another “Journey Man” who is a millionaire by being mediocre. He should be kissing Tiger Woods rear end for that.

    If he would stop paying attention to us nitwits on WRX but instead practice and play harder, he might win more.

14 players disqualified from mini-tour event for playing from the wrong tees

Published

@acaseofthegolf1

Despite the Coronavirus pandemic, there is still golf being played in some regions of the US in mini-tour events, and Tuesday during an event on the Outlaw Tour saw a significant rules controversy.

Per Ryan French (Twitter’s Monday Q Info), 14 players during round one of the Outlaw Tour’s Verrado Founders Championship were DQ’d from the event after playing from the wrong set of tees on one hole.

Despite the 14-men playing from a distance longer than they should have, there is no dispensation from the rule despite it being clear there was no intent to gain an advantage on their competitors.

Following the opening round, tournament director Jesse Burghart released a statement on Facebook where he defiantly stuck by his decision to disqualify the 14 players.

“I stand by my decision to uphold the integrity of the game and the Rules of Golf…Penalty for breach of rules is disqualification. It’s very black and white and one of the most important rules to follow.

I’ve heard all the name calling and peanut gallery remarks. At the end of the day we are supposed to be professional golfers. Ultimately it’s your decision to be one or not.

Sheriff Out”

@acaseofthegolf1

One of the players DQ’d because of the error was James Feutz who backed the Tour’s decision on his social media, but explained how he feels some compensation should be given “considering how many people made the same mistake and the current world situation.”

Bayonne was built on an old sanitary landfill covered with 7 million cubic yards of fill, much of it dredged from the harbor to efforts to make the harbor deep enough for supertankers. The deposits were piled up to 10 stories high, which developer-designer Eric Bergstol then shaped into towering faux sand dunes. The course is an ode to Irish links, with no trees, cart paths or level lies. Fairways flow down narrow valleys, edged by steep slopes laden with tall, wavy fescues. Bunkers are deep and often fearsome. A few greens sit right above the harbor and all putting surfaces have confounding humps, bumps and rolls. Tucked away down a bumpy, unpaved road past a strip mall in blue-collar Bayonne, N.J. is this private, walking-only enclave.

Phil Mickelson teases “The Match” Part 2

Published

on

With sports around the world currently at a standstill because of COVID-19, sports fans have been clamoring for any type of live-action. According to Phil Mickelson and a recent tweet he replied to, we could be seeing some live golf sooner than you might think.

We can take it for what it is right now—pure speculation, but Phil is known as a showman, and more often than not willing to back up some of his most interesting claims.

He even replied to a followup with “I don’t tease, I’m kinda a sure thing.” We will forgive the obvious grammatical errors since it was on Twitter and cross our fingers that if anyone could figure out a way to produce some live mic’d up golf its Phil.

My only hope is that after staff and production expenses are taken care of, there is a large charitable element to what could potentially be the Match Part II.
