Non-competing marker Jeff Knox’s WITB: The 2018 Masters
Wait, who is Jeff Knox? He’s the amateur course record holder at Augusta National GC (11-under 61 with a bogey on No. 17, apparently), and he gets the call to play in the Masters as a marker when there’s an odd number of players in the field on the weekend.
He’s performed this solemn duty since 2003. Most famously, he outplayed Rory McIlroy by a stroke in 2014, with McIlroy calling him “the best I’ve ever seen on Augusta’s greens.”

As a member of Augusta National and thrice the Georgia Mid-Amateur champion, Knox is anything but an “average guy.” Indeed, son of a banking magnate, Knox manages the nonprofit Knox Foundation, which oversees more than $70 million in assets. Even so, seeing him paired with a professional during the Masters telecast and playing well is somehow the fulfillment of every average golfer’s fantasy.
We weren’t surprised so many GolfWRX members were interested in Paul Casey’s high praise for Knox after their Saturday pairing. We can also report Knox unofficially shot 76 Sunday, paired with Vijay Singh. Naturally, we were curious about Mr. Knox’s WITB, and through the persistence of our own Director of Original Content Johnny Wunder, we’re happy to present the WITB for legendary Masters marker.
Here are Knox’s specs, straight from the horse’s mouth…

Doesn’t look like he smashed it. Obviously a great striker though. Just goes to show there’s more than one way to get the job done.

“Non-competing marker”?
I had always thought a marker, by definition, was a player who was not competing and who had the responsibility of marking a competitor’s card.
This headline suggests there is such a role as a ‘competing marker’. Is there?

A “Marker” is a player that is used to play in a paring where but one professional is in a group/pairing. It is for the purpose of pace.
Usually the Marker is a club pro or member which has a high level of playing ability.

He doesn’t “read” the greens …. he “lives” the greens …. and putting is 42% of the game.

18 putts a round on the average of 54 makes it only 33.333333333333333% of the game

Guys, this doesn’t make any sense. Bob Parsons told me that the only reason people don’t have top-to-bottom PXG bags is because they can’t afford them. I would have thought that Knox, as a ANGC member, would have the cash…I just can’t make sense of this.

Funny! He does have the C16 driver. $1125 MSRP. Yikes. Although I bet Titelist supplies him for free.

Will if parsons says it must be true. I make a killing beating guys with PXG irons. I can afford them but choose to play TM RSI tour irons because the work just fine.

I play KE4 Tour + irons, M series wedges, and PTM puter from Golfworks and carry a 3 hndcp. They work great. And I too can afford PXGs, and Scotty’s, just chose to spend my $ elsewhere

He’s rich, he’s a really good golfer, and one of the very few amateurs that gets to play Augusta in tournament days with the best players in the world almost every year. I would kill to be in his shoes…

I’m assuming since he has a 22 degree hybrid and a 51 degree wedge these TMBs are probably bent 2 weak for gapping do it’s a 25 4 iron and a 43 9 iron. This would also decrease offset which makes sense for a stud like JK

Mean this in the nicest way possible but maybe he doesn’t care? Clearly he’s good with what he has and doesn’t need to mess about with equipment like some of us do.
Tom
Apr 11, 2018 at 5:49 pm
43 9 iron to 51 wedge a big gap guess he’s like Hogan knowing he didn’t need a 7 iron round Carnoustie
Josh
Apr 9, 2018 at 8:17 pm
51 degree vokey. Maybe he has his t-mb’s bent weak? there’s 14 clubs there.
