The downswing is one of the most misunderstood parts to the golf swing — especially the transition from the top of the backswing into the start of the downswing. Disaster is likely to strike if you make these moves in the wrong order using the wrong parts of the body.

This video will clear up some of the questions you may have about how you should be starting down and then continuing through impact and to the finish.

I did a quick, unscientific sampling of top golfers’ swings on YouTube slo-mo videos. Tiger Woods (from 2000), Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy. Of them, only DJ moves his head forward in transition, and not as much as Ged Walters’ demonstration. All move their hips forward in transition, but 3 of these 4 keep their heads back. (Some lower their heads, along with the whole body, in a “power squat”.) So if this is good advice, some of the best players in the world are not taking it.

I was taught to keep my head in one position with little movement, I see that yours moves quite a bit. Your thoughts?

This video was a really big help for me .. just to remember to transition the lower part .. I have been losing a ton of power and at the top of my back swing it would cause me to bring my hands more over the top which is no good.. video helped a lot ..

WATCH: The best way to start your swing

Published

on

When people think of how to start the swing, they often focus on the direction or shape. This can lead to a disjointed action. In this video, Martin Ayers of Northbound Golf shows and explains that instead, the best way to start your swing is to begin in sequence. This beginning sequence maintains the cohesion needed for a more powerful and precise swing motion.

WATCH: How a ball on a string can help you get more speed with your driver

Published

on

Ernest Jones had the best analogy at the time and it still holds true today: the pen knife and the handkerchief…which we translated to ball on a string. You take any object and tie it to a string and twirl it, you will experience a nice G-force pulling on the object that is tied and you will feel how your arm reacts to that pull to keep the object going. This is the feel you want to have at the end of that driver head, and the center point is the spot between your clavicles called the sternal notch. So use the ball on the string to clip the tip of the tee on the way up and into the direction you want to start the flight of the ball like I show you here and enjoy smoking that driver like you knew you could!
