Spotted: Two new Toulon prototypes, PDX and Memphis

Published

on

On Monday at the 2017 Wyndham Championship, we spotted a new Toulon “PDX Proto” putter on the putting green at Sedgefield CC. Then, on Tuesday, the company unveiled a Memphis prototype that displayed a flow neck, which differs from the hosel design featured in the stock model.

Will these putters make it to the market, or are they Tour-only prototypes? Here’s what Toulon has to say:

“Toulon Design has been a popular choice on Tour this year, and we’re constantly testing prototype models with Tour Pros to get their feedback,” said the company in a statement. “These are prototype putters, and working with them will help give us insight from a player’s perspective.”

GolfWRX Forum Thread of the Day: Bettinardi Ryder Cup Celebrity putters

Published

on

Our GolfWRX Forum Thread of the Day was started by member devey07 who posted photos of red-white-and-blue Bettinardi Ryder Cup putters with the Paris skyline on the back cavity. On the hosels, you’d think there would be names of the 12 players on the USA team… but that’s not the case.

Jackson? Rice? Who? At the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, there’s a celebrity match being played with players such as Samuel L. Jackson, Condoleezza Rice , Michael Phelps and more. See the full list of names here.

And some head covers…

Dustin Johnson decided to putt cross-handed mid-tournament at East Lake

Published

on

Dustin Johnson made a weekend charge at the Tour Championship, and it was almost good enough for him to capture the FedEx Cup title (and with it the $10 million jackpot). Although he fell short, the revival gave him a third-place finish at the season finale, after he fired back to back rounds of 67 at East Lake. The most interesting part about his weekend performance? Well, during the sixth hole on Saturday, Johnson decided to putt for the rest of the event cross-handed.

Speaking to the media after the event, Johnson elaborated a little more on the decision (transcript from ASAP Sports)

So how did Johnson perform with the cross-handed technique? Well, the American gained strokes over the field on the greens on both days over the weekend. For the two days of action, Johnson gained 0.63 strokes over the field with the flatstick, which incidentally was more than he managed over the opening two days in Atlanta. However, a missed birdie chance from inside six feet on the 18th hole on Sunday evening doomed his chances of taking home the FedEx Cup.

Johnson is no stranger to making impulsive changes on the golf course. Recently at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Johnson switched his TaylorMade Spider Tour mid-tournament in favor of the Spider-Mini, despite winning the RBC Canadian Open the week previously with the Spider Tour. While earlier in the year, Johnson decided to implement the AimPoint putting technique. A change which didn’t last long, after instructor Butch Harmon told him to stop as he had no idea what he was doing.

With just four days until the Ryder Cup begins, how comfortable do U.S. fans feel about Johnson deciding to putt cross-handed for the biennial event?

It’s officially Ryder Cup week, so let the custom gear and apparel begin!

For the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris at Le Golf National, Under Armour has made a patriotic pair of shoes for Team USA’s Jordan Spieth. Not only are they for him, however, but Under Armour has released a limited number of “similar” shoes to the public, according to a press release from the company. The Spieth 2 USA shoes are available now on Under Armour’s website for $200.

Like the original Spieth 2 colorways, the Spieth 2 USA shoes have a Gore-Tex construction for 100 percent waterproof protection, according to the company. Also, the shoes have TPU (thermoplastic urethane) fibers in the upper made for durability and an overall lighter weight.
