Tin Cup Challenge: Bryson DeChambeau plays an entire round with just a 7-iron

Published

on

“But then there’s the 7 iron. I never miss with the 7 iron.”

In the cult-classic, 1998-movie Tin Cup, Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy and his caddie have a collective meltdown during a U.S.-Open local qualifying round where they break each of the clubs in his bag over their knees… every club except his 7 iron. Of course, McAvoy proceeds to qualify for the U.S. Open “regionals” after playing the remaining holes successfully with the lone 7 iron.

Playing golf with just a 7 iron requires tremendous shotmaking and feel. When you think of shotmaking, surely one of the last players that comes to mind is golf’s resident scientist, Bryson DeChambeau, who uses irons and wedges that all measure the same length and lie angle. He’s notoriously calculated in his approach to the game of golf, and could be the antithesis to the movie character that is Tin Cup.

On Tuesday, following DeChambeau’s first ever PGA Tour victory at the John Deere Classic, Red Bull released a video of the one-length swinger playing 18 holes with just a 7 iron — the “Tin Cup Challenge.”

It’s clear from the video that DeChambeau struggled a bit more than Tin Cup did, but it’s still impressive that DeChambeau abandoned his style of play to participate in the challenge.

The real winner of the “Tin Cup” 7-iron challenge remains David Simms, who won a long-distance bet against McAvoy in the movie. A lesson learned, but also still a great shot under pressure from Simms to hit it down the narrow road of Cotton Wood Country Club.

While we probably won’t be seeing DeChambeau attempt to qualify for the U.S. Open with just a 7 iron anytime soon, he will be in the field at the 2017 Open Championship after qualifying through his recent win at the John Deere Classic.

Tin Cup is not a cult classic. It was a much anticipated movie by golf fans, that dudded, due to horrible acting by Kevin Costner and “golf scenes” that were totally unrealistic (you cant back up a three wood on a US Open green and Costner’s swing was horrible). The only reason it’s on TV all the time is because it’s so cheap for networks to re-run.

Tin Cup is not about golf. It is chock full of hogwash (network TV version) and inner demons!

John Daly would be the guy I think would rock the 7 iron challenge.

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
