Tuesday’s Photos from the 2017 Open Championship

GolfWRX is onsite this week at the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale for the 146th playing of golf’s oldest championship.

Dustin Johnson enters as the betting favorite this week, followed by John Rahm, who won the Irish Open just more than a week ago. The 22-year-old Spaniard will be a popular pick to win this week; he’s arguably the hottest and most consistent golfer in the world at the moment. The coldest among big name players might be Rory McIlroy, who Open Championship prep included missed cuts at the Irish and Scottish opens the last two weeks.

Royal Birkdale last hosted an Open Championship in 2008, where Padraig Harrington pulled away from final round leader Greg Norman and Ian Poulter to win by four shots. Returning the Claret Jug this week is Henrik Stenson, who topped Phil Mickelson by three shots in an epic Sunday showdown last year at Royal Troon. Enjoy our photos!

Still can’t see parts 4 or 5. This happens all the time now. What’s the deal?

What?! For the most part, this is a golf equipment website. Also, we play a game where we have to spend thousands of dollars on equipment, and play with said equipment for hours and hours per round. Why would you not be interested to see what the pros play? Each pro sets up their bag to conform to their unique strengths and weaknesses, and it’s fascinating to see how each and every pro chooses their equipment based on how they think they can best score. It’s cool to see someone with short drivers and 5 wedges, or someone with tons of hybrids and a really long putter. There are so many ways to score in this game and play well. The pros are the best of the best, and it’s awesome to see what they use individually. It’s like each of their clubs tells some story of their game.

That would be like asking why a motorhead is so obsessed with car engines and other peoples’ vehicles. It’s because it’s a passion that the person is interested in. Why would you question why someone is interested in something? That’s ignorant of you if you ask me.

Is it possible for golfWRX to change the design here a little so that “Reply” is in big blue letters, and “Report comment” is a flag, or a tiny grey link, or at least spawns a pop-up, “are you sure?” window when we “report comment”.

I inadvertently “report comment” almost every time I want to reply.

    it’s astounding.

Guy goes over to one of the best courses in England and the “handpicked” photos are close-ups of headcovers and wedges.

Ok, now it works back. Just had a message regarding certificate to use, from or so called. Just refused, but pictures are now there and lag has gone.

Is is normal that since 2 weeks I cannot see the pictures anymore? Huge lag on the pages and nothing on display, for all the pages with ton of pictures.

Wednesday’s photos from the 2019 Terra Cotta Invitational

GolfWRX is live from the 2019 Terra Cotta Invitational at Naples National Golf Club, which will be contested April 26-28. Past winners of the amateur event include Justin Thomas and Emiliano Grillo.

Denny Glass, chairman of the Terra Cotta Invitational, was kind enough to give us a little more information about the tournament.

For GolfWRX members who aren’t familiar, tell me a little bit about the tournament and its history

Glass: The Terra Cotta Invitational began in 1996 and was originally a combination stroke play/match play event. 20 players were invited and they played 36 holes of stroke play then the top four finishers went on to match play with the others playing an 18 hole consolation match.

I changed it to a 54-hole stroke play event with 50 players in 2006 when I took over as Tournament Chair. This was done to be eligible for Titleist/Golfweek Amateur Ranking Points. The field increased over the years and now has 75-81 players. The tournament is now ranked as a “B” level event in the WAGR (World Amateur Golf Rankings) run by the USGA and R&A. This ranking is one level below the top-ranked events in the world. The WAGR rankings are based on the strength of the field so we are proud to be ranked so highly.

As it’s an invitational tournament, can you tell me a bit about who gets invited in general and who’s in the field this year, specifically? Tournament format?

Glass: It is an invitational so we invite as many of the top-ranked amateur players as are available. The field consists of many juniors (up to age 18), mid-amateurs (19-25) and some seniors (50+), along with collegiate players. While it is an invitational, we still receive more than 150 applications to play.

Can you talk about the host course and the relationship with Naples National?

The tournament is played at Naples National Golf Club. The tournament was started by the membership back in 1996. The club opened in 1993. The club hosted the World Championship of Golf, which was an LPGA event in its second year.

I know the charitable impact is important. Can you tell us about that?

The net proceeds are donated to Naples based children’s focused charities. The tournament has donated over $517,000 since it began.
