Monday’s Photos from the 2017 Open Championship

Published

on

GolfWRX is onsite this week at the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale for the 146th playing of golf’s oldest championship.

Dustin Johnson (12/1) enters as the betting favorite this week, followed by John Rahm (14/1), who won the Irish Open just more than a week ago. The 22-year-old Spaniard will be a popular pick to win this week; he’s arguably the hottest and most consistent golfer in the world at the moment. The coldest among big name players might be Rory McIlroy (16/1), who Open Championship prep included missed cuts at the Irish and Scottish opens the last two weeks.

Royal Birkdale last hosted an Open Championship in 2008, where Padraig Harrington (66/1) pulled away from final round leader Greg Norman and Ian Poulter (50/1) to win by four shots. Returning the Claret Jug this week is Henrik Stenson (25/1), who topped Phil Mickelson (33/1) by three shots in an epic Sunday showdown last year at Royal Troon.

They usually make the U.K. Open courses tougher than that . I was there at Royal St. Georges in 2003 when an unknown American 5th reserve called Ben Curtis won it . His total for 4 rounds ?
    Level par .

Phil Mickelson, who has two top-5 finishes at Shinnecock Hills, will seek to fill out his career Grand Slam with a win this week. Also, it’s Tiger Woods’ 10-year anniversary of winning the legendary 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines — that was his most recent major championship victory.

Also in the field are headliners Dustin Johnson (now ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings), Justin Thomas (No. 2), Justin Rose (No. 3), Jon Rahm (No. 4) and Jordan Spieth (No. 5).

Brooks Koepka (No. 9) is the defending champion; he won last year by four shots for his first and only major so far in his career.
