Your chance to test the new Callaway Steelhead XR Fairway Wood
Given WRXers respect for the history of golf equipment, we know you were eminently excited to see Callaway’s updated version of the Steelhead fairway wood hit the market.
Even more exciting news: Callaway is offering GolfWRX members the chance for exclusive testing of the new Steelhead XR 3+ and 4+ fairway woods.
We’re looking for 6 GolfWRX members to test the new Steelhead XR fairway woods. Each member will exclusively test either a Steelhead XR 3+ or Steelhead XR 4+ fairway wood. Shaft will be the Mitsubishi Chemical Tensei CK Series shaft.
Rather than replying to the associated forum post as you usually do for giveaways/testing, you’ll need to fill out the short application survey here. The application period will end July 24, 2017. Testers will be notified via the GolfWRX PM system shortly thereafter.
Here’s the message the good folks in Carlsbad wanted us to pass along to the readership in conjunction with this awesome opportunity.
“If you’ve been around golf for a while and familiar with our brand, you probably remember the old iconic Steelhead Fairway Woods and particularly the that are still widely considered to be one of the best fairway woods of all time. Well… they’re back and more powerful than ever.
“The reason the original Steelhead gained so much popularity was its beautiful shape and innovative Hawkeye Sole which promoted solid contact from almost any lie. With the new Steelhead XR Fairway Wood, we have improved on that iconic shape to make the head even more forgiving and easy to launch as well as incorporated modern power-producing technologies to super charge the face and give you killer distance and maximum forgiveness from the tee as well as the turf.
“Basically, this club is a beautiful beast, but before we unleash it on the public, we NEED your feedback. As always, we’re looking for some eager community members to put this baby through the ringer and provide us with honest feedback before it hits the market. I know you’re interested… so hit the link below to register.”

What’s the perfect mini-driver/shaft combo? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing Mini-Drivers and accompanying shafts. WRXer ‘JamesFisher1990’ is about to purchase a BRNR Mini and is torn on what shaft weight to use, and our members have been sharing their thoughts and set ups in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- PARETO: “New BRNR at 13.5. Took it over to TXG (Club Champ but TXG will always rule) in Calgary for a fit. Took the head down to 12, stuck in a Graphite Design AD at 3 wood length and 60g. Presto- numbers that rivaled my G430Max but with waaaaay tighter dispersion. Win.”
- driveandputtmachine: “Still playing a MIni 300. The head was only 208, so I ordered a heavier weight and play it at 3 wood length. I am playing a Ventus Red 70. I play 70 grams in my fairways. I use it mainly to hit draws off the tee. When I combine me, a driver, and trying to hit a draw it does not work out well most of the time. So the MIni is for that. As an aside, I have not hit the newest BRNR, but the previous model wasn’t great off the deck. The 300 Mini is very good off the deck.”
- JAM01: “Ok, just put the BRNR in the bag along side a QI10 max and a QI10 3 wood. A load of top end redundancy. But, I have several holes at my two home courses where the flight and accuracy of the mini driver helps immensely. Mine is stock Proforce 65 at 13.5, I could see a heavier shaft, but to normal flex, as a nice alternative.”

I’ll wait for 2 years when FT-i XR comes out. I need more launch and speed with less spin and twisting.

Used to have the 3+ back in the day and saw one of the new ones in the proshop over the weekend. The club looks great! Wonder if it would sound the same. . . Little bit of nostalgia.

You don’t even get to keep the club. For all the promotion Callaway & WRX is receiving from this promotion you’d think they could afford to part with 6 clubs. If they want them back because they’re prototypes then the 6 six golfers should at least get an official release version of the club for their trouble. That is, assuming they want one after testing. Just a thought…

It took approximately 90 seconds to fill out. I’m someone that plays steelhead plus 5-7-9, so I’m excited for the opportunity.
Mind you, mine all have modern shafts, but the heads are still great.
