Rickie Fowler answers critics: “Getting angry doesn’t work for me”
If you recall, in this very space, we discussed some of Rickie Fowler’s post-U.S. Open remarks and the young star’s demeanor in defeat.
In response to the chatter about his final-round 76 and optimistic take on failing to win the U.S. Open, Fowler had some interesting things to say ahead of this week’s Quicken Loans National.
“It was kind of unfortunate to see some of the stuff written that was saying I wasn’t angry enough about coming up short.”
“I’ve always been someone who has controlled my emotions. On and off the golf course. Part of the reason that I may have not looked upset at Erin Hills was because I’m not going to show it. Of course I was disappointed that I didn’t get the job done.”
Again, as a competitive golfer, we didn’t doubt he was disappointed. However, his immediate post-round tone and the fact that, well, social media showed him enjoying his life per usual shortly thereafter raised a few eyebrows.
“I put myself in good position and gave myself a chance. I was pleased about that. But at the same time, we did have a good chance going into Sunday and I was upset I didn’t get the job done. But getting angry? Start showing that I’m mad? That doesn’t work for me.”
So there you have it. He was upset, but he wasn’t going to, say, pull a Jon Rahm on the course. The question remains, do we want him to? Do we accept a range of displays of competitiveness while understanding that, of course, everyone wants to win?
Who can say. However, if/when Rickie Fowler wins a major, there will be much less focus on his demeanor or nitpicking of his words. Which is to say, in the interest of sports journalism, please win a major, Rickie Fowler.

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

Although they are essentially all walking in Tiger’s footsteps (and, yeah, Arnie’s and Jack’s)… it’s very nice to see that so many of today’s young players *don’t* follow Tiger’s example of slamming, swearing and spazzing at every bad shot or break. Tiger did NOT set a good example – at all – in that regard. To equate such behavior with “passion” and “drive” and “caring” is borderline idiotic. Likewise, to equate the lack of that type of rabid display with lack of caring, passion and drive is borderline idiotic. Then again, the majority of modern media behave borderline idiotic most of the time. When a player throws a fit, the temper tantrums are “news”. When a player doesn’t, the “lack of caring” is news. The REAL news in all of this is that far too few writers and commentators today are capable of telling a story without absolutist sensationalism at every turn. Look at every Golfwrx headline, and although most are not meant as comedy, you’ll find – as the reader – the joke is most definitely on you.

When Retief Goosen was at the top of his game ( U.S. Open + ) you couldn’t tell from his demeanor as he strolled along whether he was 10 over or 10 under . Horses for courses .

You don’t get to Rickies level in the game by not being competitive or caring if you win. Certain players, DJ included, have super stable dimeanors. It’s hard to tell where they are on the leader board. Some players get pumped up or pissed off but seem to be streakier. No right or wrong just different personality types.

The Pro’s today are paid so much whether they win or lose. How upset can you or should you get knowing you have your very own little jet waiting for you when you get ready to go. Maybe he says and does things off camera. The one that gets me is how a guy can be the number 1 golfer in the world and only play in the tournaments that only bring the higher marks. DJ blew me away last year at the Fed – Ex year end tournament. He never even looked like he cared whether he hit a fairway or a green let alone missing putts while Rory took Atlanta like Grant took Richmond. They are way over paid and that is what Tiger brought to the game. How can you have non golf companies endorsing players with watch’s and shoe’s and shirts and cars. The players look like walking bill boards. Is it golf or advertising.

All of that had already been set in motion by Arnold Palmer. The Eldrick effect is overrated. That sort of thing exploded in everything in the 90’s, so it wasn’t just golf in thanks to Eldrick. Lets not fluff his ego any further shall we?

At the end of the day Rickie is an uber-successful golfer, making tons of money, and has a great life. I think what people should be writing about is how Rickie is great at keeping perspective on life, not about how he doesn’t throw tantrums in defeat…

I was just about to say pretty much the same thing. Lol. Probably most of the people making a deal about Rickie are the same ones who always griped about Tiger or who currently gripe about Jordan Spieth (who does little more than show that he is upset with himself when he hits a bad shot).
