Bettinardi launches customizable UPatch headcovers, Inovai 5.0 putters
Customized putters started as a PGA Tour phenomenon. Then they trickled down to amateur golfers who wanted their putters to be customized like the pros with their name, initials, favorite paint colors and stampings. One of the leaders of the trend was Bettinardi Golf, which is aiming to start a new putter trend: customizable putter headcovers.
A UPatch headcover we photographed at the Quicken Loans National.
Bettinardi’s new UPatch headcovers have a velcro exterior that allows golfers to customize their putter headcover with patches that can be arranged (and rearranged) to their liking. They’re available in three colors (black, gray or white) for $75, a price that includes three patches.
In all, 41 patches are available to help golfers create a headcover that’s uniquely theirs. Click through to Bettinardi.com see the patch options, which includes a cigar, a hot dog, and a wizard.
Bettinardi has also announced the launch of its new Inovai 5.0 putters. A company representative called the new model an evolution of its Inovai 3.0 putter, as it uses the same bi-metal contruction (aluminum and steel) that increases its forgiveness. Its slated for release later in 2017.
We spotted several prototype versions of the putters at the Quicken Loans National, where they were being tested by PGA Tour players.

Ping PLD putters have been a very common site on profesional tours. Pros seem to gravitate toward the PLD line’s custom options and precision milling. We have seen the PLD line expanded over the years, but we haven’t seen too many, if any, large mallets.
This week we spotted a PLD putter in Nate Lashley’s bag that has a similar look to the old Ping Wolverine head shape. This putter is a large mallet with the famous “claws” on the outside and oval center that housed the alignment aid.
Nick’s putter has the PLD logo on the back but also looks like it might have an insert installed on the face. It is hard to tell but at the address picture, it looks like the face is a lighter material than the rest of the putters. The putter is center-shafted and should be face-balanced with a high MOI for stability and forgiveness on mishits. The sole is completely milled and has no markings of name or technologies that might be present in the head. A single white site line is on the top of the putter for alignment.
Nick’s putter is finished off with a chrome steel shaft and a Super Stroke Zenergy Flatso 2.0 grip in black and white.

A more serious take: the Bettinardi guys see how much money the Cameron guys are making on headcovers (which is truly astounding and nonsensical) and are spitballing ideas to compete and grab a share of that market.
But this is a fail.
People aren’t buying all those “limited edition” headcovers because they look cool or are a way to express oneself. They’re golf’s equivalent of Beanie Babies. It’s a craze with a false sense of scarcity. So long as people will keep buying them they will keep making more.
But you can’t blame the Bettinardi guys for trying. Putter covers cost about $5 to produce. If you can sell a $5 product for $75, you can make a lot of money…. And this idea would lend itself to “limited edition” velcro patches. If they could pull that off the margins would be insane. But people won’t buy this.

Why don’t they infuse these into putter grips ? Say charge a cool $150.00 per grip. You heard it here first . Then you could charge $650.00 for the hunk of what ever you use for the putter head. SOLD
