Butch Harmon to Rickie Fowler: Be a golf pro, not a Kardashian
Rickie Fowler was a sensation on the PGA Tour long before he had a win to his name. And while it would take and expert in branding and marketing to describe exactly why this was the case, we can all agree there was (and is) a Fowler mystique. In fact, if you didn’t know, “steek” was Fowler’s nickname early in his career.
In the long arc of the Rickie Fowler story, his 2014 Players Championship win will be seen as a pivot point, certainly. However, it’s not like he immediately started winning thereafter. In fact, his 2014 campaign was better than his efforts in 2015 and 2016 (which was without a PGA Tour win).
So, in the event Fowler goes on to win this U.S. Open, we might be able to add this interaction with his coach, Butch Harmon as another pivot point.
Here’s what Harmon told Tim Rosaforte about a conversation he had with his pupil at the end of 2016.
“I said, ‘You gotta decide, are you going to be a Kardashian or are you going to be a golf pro? You’re the king of social media, you’re all over these Snapchats and all these things.’”
First of all, “all over these Snapchats!” Oh, Dad! But Harmon had a point. And as he said, his remarks gave Fowler “a little kick in the butt to work harder.”
Harmon continued:
“I just wanted to draw a parallel to someone who has gotten a lot of fame without doing much. Rickie is a good golfer, but he had to get back to being a golfer. He didn’t like it when I said that. If I was him, I wouldn’t like it either, but it has motivated him to work harder and show me, which is the whole idea of telling him that.”
Well played, Butch. And an illustration of why he’s one of the top coaches in the world: Harmon is able to help top players improve, and not just just by reconfiguring takeaways or angles of attack.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.
For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- btyh: “Holy offset.”
- Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
- bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing
As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
What happens when 4 #PGATOUR pros take a day off?
Luckily, the cameras were rolling.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

Butch is(was) right on. With all the social media we have an entire generation of budding narcissists and it may get worse with future generations or….maybe they will rebel against it and return to sanity.

Would agree with Butch, way to much time paid to Rick Fowler when it comes to all golf coverage…there are at least 25 guys in the world playing better golf with more wins then Rick and if they are not at the top during any given tournament the media has nothing to do with them..but let Rick just show up and the media is all over him….another example of what Butch was taking about…like all news the golfing world loves “Fake’ news…..

Why is Fowlers (aka “Kim”) cap in the photo Photoshopped? That is not how he wears his hat nor the style he wears. You can see that it is Photoshopped.
