Late birdies propel Blixt to first PGA Tour victory

Published

on

Jonas Blixt was tied for the lead last week entering the final round of the Justin Timberlake Shriners for Children Hospital Open in Las Vegas. But the PGA Tour rookie failed to go low in Sunday; he shot a final-round 70 to finish in third place, four shots behind tournament winner Ryan Moore.

“I got a little too cute with some shots and wasn’t aggressive enough,” Blixt said.

Blixt learned from his mistakes this week at the Frys.com Open, shooting a 3-under 68 in the final round to finish at 16-under and win for the first time on the Tour.

The 28-year-old Swede finished one shot ahead of Tim Petrovic and Jason Kokrak, who shot rounds of 64 and 68 respectively to put themselves in contention. Playing in the final group, Blixt finished with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 and buried a clutch 4-foot par putt on No. 18 to seal the deal.

Blixt was one of four players in the field with all four rounds in the 60s at CordeValle Golf Club. The 2011 graduate of the Web.com Tour also went all four rounds without a 3-putt, extending his streak of holes without a 3-putt to 243.

Blixt became the eighth Swedish player to win on the PGA Tour, joining Jesper Parnevik, Carl Pettersson, Gabriel Hjerstedt, Daniel Chopra, Henrik Stenson, Mathias Gronberg and Richard S. Johnson. With the victory, he moved to No. 35 on the Tour’s money list, and is fully exempt through the end of the 2014 PGA Tour season. Blixt, who has never played in a major, also earns a trip to the 2013 PGA Championship.

Equipment Notes

Blixt wears custom “Tomato red” Puma Cell Fusion Ice golf shoes. Like fellow Cobra-Puma staffer Rickie Fowler, his shoes are a tribute to his alma mater. Blixt attended Florida State University where he was a two-time All American for the red and gold.

Wonder what the face angle is? Their web site does not say. This one looks kind of closed to me.
