Wait, what? A Twitter vote is deciding an LPGA Tour exemption
In a play to use social media as a way to boost interest in the event, the LPGA Tour’s ShopRite Classic has put its final sponsor exemption up to a vote on Twitter.
We’ve partnered with @MVPindex to award the final spot in our field! Vote now for @MissNicollet @BLAIRONEAL @mumita_b or @CarlyBooth92
— ShopRiteLPGAClassic (@ShopRiteLPGA) May 1, 2017
Susana Benavides (6,959 Twitter followers), Carly Booth (35.2K followers), Sharmila Nicollet (357K followers) and Blair O’Neal (77.2K followers) are the golfers who are to be voted on for the spot in the event that’s held the first week of June.
“We’ve always been proud of the exemptions we’ve given in the past,” said Tim Erensen, the executive director for the tournament, which takes place in the first week in June. “In the past, we’ve given exemptions to Brooke Henderson, Lexi Thompson and Paula Creamer at the beginning of their careers. We think this idea adds to the excitement of what we do.”
Also of note, MVP Index — the company who’s tracking the poll — was co-founded by Shawn Spieth, who’s Jordan Spieth’s father.
Now, sponsors typically fill their exemptions based not just on merit, but on star power as well. That’s why golfers such as John Daly often get the nod over possibly more talented, but less-popular golfers. But something about voting on Twitter to fill a sponsors exemption seems wrong, doesn’t it? Let’s put it to a vote.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.
For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- btyh: “Holy offset.”
- Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
- bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing
As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.
Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.
What happens when 4 #PGATOUR pros take a day off?
Luckily, the cameras were rolling.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.

Seems silly to give an exemption to the prettiest girl if she cant make the cut and play on the weekend. Whats next a wet t shirt contest on Monday every week

I see Blair O’Neal is sporting a new chest, as it were, that in and of itself should garner a few votes from the mouthbreather crowd. Apparently the other LPGA players think this Skin Game is fine otherwise why wouldn’t they protest the blatant sexism displayed by the LPGA?
As for the Neanderthal’s calling the LPGA a “Clown Car”, perhaps they feel threatened that most of the players on the LPGA have a better game than they do.

You have to be pretty dumb to be upset by this.
The purpose is to increase the income of the LPGA by increasing the number of viewers.
These people will do this more than that one person on the cutoff line.
Not exactly rocket science.

Really? How about awarding a sponsor’s exemption to a player who has the most talent/ability? Has this become a popularity/sexuality contest instead of a golf tournament?

LPGA has to think of something to offset the boatload of Koreans on the leaderboard.

only way you push the koreans off the leaderboard is to get more non-Korean talent, not beauty — not that the two are mutually exclusive.

Newsflash – The leaderboard doesn’t matter to the LPGA and their sponsors as much as the attendance/viewer count. “Stunts” like this help in that department.

It’s very difficult to imagine John Daly leaving more talented golfers out of tournaments. Currently better players? Yes, definitely but not many have the (wasted) talent of Mr. Daly.
As for the LPGA stunt, that’s just ridiculous. Do they want their tour taken as a serious sport or not? It surely looks like they don’t.
