Apparently, golf instruction manga is a really big thing in Japan

Published

on

Is manga, the Japanese-style comics, the future of golf instruction? Probably not. But we were interested to see that golf instructional comics are apparently a big thing in Japan.

CNN’s Living Golf show featured a few of the more popular titles, such as “Kaze NoDaichi” and “King Golf.”

The show spoke with Takanobu Tamura, an illustrator for “Golf Lesson Comic.”

“It’s not about fun — that’s not really allowed in golf lesson manga,” Tamura said. “It’s a lesson, so obviously, you have to draw it in a way the reader can understand. You have to write it so that the method the lesson professional is describing is properly communicated to the reader, so entertainment takes a backseat.”

And, of course, there’s a high degree of attention paid to the technical aspects of the swing and its positions.

“And then you have to draw a proper hook shot to represent a hook, a slice to represent a slice shot — having to draw the slice form is what I take most care over.”

And the comic takes a keen interest in the mental side of the game. Shinji Matsuyama, the magazine’s editor, explained: “You often spend more time thinking than you do playing, and I think that such psychological depiction is suited to manga.”

Matsuyama (no relation to Hideki) also indicated manga brings something special to the golf instruction table

“If you explain things in pictures it’s clearer, easier for people to understand. So that’s where the idea of using manga for golf lessons has come from…you can create pictures that you couldn’t normally capture with a still camera or on video, with manga.”

Reportedly, 100,000 people per month purchase “Golf Lesson Comic.”

So, maybe GolfWRX featured instructors Dennis Clark and Tom Stickney ought to look into hiring an illustrator?

I only know of Yawara Inokuma showing any interest in golf, but only recreational. She is, of course, destined for Judo!

King Golf is actually a pretty fun read, it’s about a delinquent who starts playing golf. If you do a Google search for it, you can find scanlated chapters up to around 100-110 on most manga sites. Not sure about paperback copies though; I believe the scanlation is pretty far behind where the manga’s actually at.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
