Was this really Tiger Woods’ most clutch shot ever?

Published

on

Tiger Woods is scheduled to make his long-awaited return to competition at the Hero World Challenge December 1. And ahead of that return (and with the PGA Tour on hiatus until January) golf’s scribes are mining the archives for tasty Tiger morsels.

Fifteen years ago at the World Cup of Golf, Woods holed a supremely brilliant chip shot for eagle that Golfweek’s Kevin Casey called the “most clutch moment” of the 14-time major champion’s career.

Casey sets the scene.

“In 2001, the World Cup of Golf, an unofficial event that is being contested this week at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Australia, came to Taiheiyo Club’s Gotemba Course in Japan.

“The American duo of Woods and David Duval was the defending champion but found itself in massive trouble on the 72nd hole this time around.

“With Denmark and South Africa already in the clubhouse at 24 under, the U.S. needed eagle at the final hole to have any chance of making a potential playoff.

“Good news: They were playing a par-5. Bad news: They frankly didn’t play it too well, as Woods would need to make a chip from well off the green to give the Americans the eagle they needed”

In the wake of Casey’s bold claim, we had to go to the video.

Ultimately, given the context, it’s tough to place that pitch ahead of, say…

But as Casey rightly identified in the opening to his piece, “clutch” is a highly subjective term.

What do you think?

Why was Tiger wearing a t-shirt playing at the Masters?

      It was authorized until 2006.

Mock neck shirts are considered suitable golf attire at my club.

This video is the *what* tournament? Obviously not his most clutch, nobody will remember this.

The correct answer is the US Open putt in ’08.

    Let’s see:

The 6 iron from the bunker on the 72nd hole to win the Canadian Open.

The approach iron, from the rough, on the 72nd hole, to 12 feet. Then he made the putt. To tie Rocco Mediate. In the US freaking Open.

I feel like Tiger made 3 or 4 winning putts on the 18th at Bay Hill.

Any number of shots Tiger made at the 2000 PGA against Bob May.

That ridiculous chip in at the 2012 Memorial on 16 in the final round. He won that tournament by 2 shots.

Tiger has won so much it’s hard to pick.

I looked up these stats… the guy is 16-1 in playoffs, he’s 43 for 45 when holding the outright lead after 54 holes and 28 for 33 when holding the outright lead after 36 holes.

His most clutch shot was when he put his clubs in the trunk after one of his WD’s. The clubs did not hit the side of the trunk at all. Bag went in nice and smooth no adjustments necessary. Lid slammed shut no obstruction from bag, or head covers. Nicely done.

That shot looked tougher than the Master’s chip, but certainly not as meaningful. More clutch? Maybe.

The worst is the automatic ad that plays in the background over your phone that shuts your music off every 10 seconds.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
