Gap wedge as the name implies was to fill the gap between W and SW. In the early 90’s club makers wanted to say their clubs were the longest so they started bending them stronger and a “gap” developed between the wedges so they had to fill it in. Most blades didn’t get into that so much so they never needed it or the pros bent them to even out their iron distances.
