Dustin Johnson wins PGA Tour’s Player of the Year award

Published

on

Already the winner of the PGA of America’s Player of the Year award and the Vardon Trophy, Dustin Johnson made it a hat trick, as his contemporaries awarded him PGA Tour’s Player of the Year honors today.

The 32-year-old nabbed the first major of his career at the U.S. Open. He also won two other strong-field events: the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the BMW Championship. Johnson teed it up 22 times on the PGA Tour during the 2015-2016 season and missed the cut just once (at the PGA Championship). He finished inside the top-25 an impressive 19 times with 15 top-10 finishes.

A final-round 73 saw him slide to second in the final FedEx Cup standings behind Rory McIlroy, but he still won more (non-FedEx Cup) money than anyone on Tour with more than $9.3 million in earnings.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour, my congratulations to Dustin Johnson for his outstanding play on big stages during the 2015-16 season,” Commissioner Tim Finchem said. “His hard work on the golf course and in the gym paid off with the finest season of his career, and the member vote reflects the respect his peers have for him.”

Statistically, Johnson was second on Tour in strokes gained: off-the-tee (1.117), 36th in strokes gained: putting (.328), third in strokes gained: tee-to-green (1.664), and second in strokes gained: total (1.993). Predictably, he was also second in driving distance at an average of 313.6 yards per drive.

Johnson won the Vardon race with an adjusted scoring average of 69.172 based upon 87 complete rounds.

Johnson, who will receive the Jack Nicklaus Trophy for winning PGA Tour POY, was selected for the honor over Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Henrik Stenson.

The event has been around since 1922, making it one of the oldest on the PGA Tour calendar. Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
