Published

If you caught our photos from the FedEx St. Jude Classic earlier this week, you probably marveled at Lee McCoy’s custom Callaway wedges.

And after the drooling subsided, you probably came to the conclusion that McCoy, former University of Georgia standout appearing in his first tournament as a pro, had signed with Callaway.

Indeed he has. As have three other top-ranked amateurs–Thomas Detry, Matt NeSmith, and Will Starke–the company announced today.

McCoy was a First Team All-American in 2016 for the University of Georgia, and a three-time All-American selection overall. When he turned pro, he was the No. 3 amateur in the world. He tied for fourth at the Valspar Championship earlier this year.

Callaway also inked a 2016 Big Ten Champion from the University of Illinois: Thomas Detry. Detry is the seventh-ranked amateur in the world and was the 2015 Big Ten Golfer of the Year.

Matt NeSmith, 1st Team All-American in 2016 for the University of South Carolina, also joins Team Callaway. NeSmith is the No. 8 amateur in the world

Finally, Will Starke, All-American selection for the University of South Carolina and winner of the Mackenzie Tour’s Q-School in April will be sporting the chevron.

All 4 staffers will play Callaway equipment and an Odyssey Putter. Callaway’s young Tour Staff is large and growing. It includes major winners Danny Willett and Lydia Ko, Branden Grace, Patrick Reed, Danny Lee, Harris English, Ryo Ishikawa, Emiliano Grillo, Thomas Pieters, Ollie Schniederjans, and Wesley Bryan.

I saw Lee McCoy at the Walker Cup. He seemed very calm and was hitting some great/ strange shots on the practice ground before he went out, just fooling around. I think that that mindset will be very useful in his future. Good enough to be on the PGA tour in my opinion. Bryson Dechambeau was the standout player on both teams however and a class act.

Most, except for the DAWGS !!! Georgia boys doing pretty well out on tour. Chris Hack is doing something different. Don’t know what, but it seems to be working. McCoy will do just fine. Don’t know about the rest.

They will all wind up mid pack grinders on the Web.com

Do you not consider Aaron Wise to be a top ranked amateur signed by Callaway?

Exactly. The NCAA individual win earned him a spot as the 5th ranked amateur in the world golf amateur rankings.

Does not matter. They will all wind up on the Web.com and never be heard from again like all the others every year. And most wint even be able to hack it on the Web.com. These college stars rarely pan out in the big leagues. Maybe 1 in 50 of the good ones might get a card.

I wasn’t projecting a presumption regarding anyone of the golfers stated in article above.
You would maybe find a different thread for that.

All good investments except for Ryo, he’s yesterday’s news. Matsuyama is the main man from Japan now.

Wow.. That wedge looks an awful lot like a custom
Scratch wedge with the punisher logo i engraved on it 6 months ago as a refinish job. Also happens to be my “avatar” on the site.

I guess my creative skills are better than I thought?

Bad move investing in kids that are not half as good as they think. Thes Georgia kids could not even dominate in the NCAA ranks.
