Odyssey’s new limited-edition Highway 101 putters
Surely you’ve heard of Highway I-20, which is the road that takes you from the Atlanta airport to Augusta National Golf Club. But there’s an argument to be had that there’s another highway that’s even more important to the game of golf, or at least golf equipment. And that’s Highway 101.
Highway 101 runs through Carlsbad, California, where Odyssey calls home; and it’s far from the only golf equipment manufacturer in the area.
“Within a couple mile radius, you have…75 percent of the putter market in the United States,” says Chris Koske, Odyssey Global Product Strategy Director.
As such, Odyssey’s new limited-edition Highway 101 putters are an ode to the Carlsbad area, which Koske calls “the mecca for golf club design.”
Also in the surrounding area are beaches, surfer hangouts, Cypress trees and the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course(s). With its designs, the Highway 101 putters manage to incorporate all of the elements that make Carlsbad unique.
And the limited putters aren’t just for show, or for your putter collection — they’re designed to perform.
The putters are made from 1020 carbon steel, and have a 17-4 stainless steel insert with the familiar Odyssey Metal-X pattern. But for a new sound and feel, they have what Odyssey calls a “sound chamber” behind the face, designed to allow sound to resonate and provide greater feedback, according to the company.
Therefore, with the sound chamber, the sound off the face will be slightly louder than it would be with just the insert. And that’s on purpose.
As Odyssey/Callaway Tour player and resident golf club design consultant Phil Mickelson said, according to Koske, “I want a 5-foot putt to sound and feel like a 5-foot putt. It should entertain all the senses.” With modern golf balls, it’s said that the sound and feel off the face are too soft. The Highway 101 putters are designed to quell those concerns.
Odyssey is releasing 1,000 of the putters in three of the company’s most popular models, with slight alterations compared to the original models:
- #7 (400 putters available): Odyssey describes this version of the #7 as a “progressive mallet” with “weighted alignment wings,” and a single bend, slant-joint hosel.
- #2 (400 putters): This version of the #2 has a “slightly larger heel-toe blade” and has a crank-neck hosel.
- #5 (200 putters): This #5 is described as a “half-moon mallet” with a single-bend, single-joint hosel.
They will be available on May 27 for $399.99 and come equipped with a Genuine Cabretta leather Red Midszie Master grip with a Black Baseball stitch. More specs below:
- Loft: 3 degrees
- Lie angle: 70 degrees
- Length: 35 inches
- Dexterity: RH Only
- Head weight: 350 grams

From the Forums: I need more forgiveness in my irons – Looking for recommendations
In our forums, our members have been discussing the most forgiving irons currently on the market. WRXer ‘TheShark1’ is on the hunt for a new set of irons, saying:
“Currently gaming the Mizuno Pro 225’s but think I need more forgiveness in my irons. My well struck shots are real nice, but my mishits are not performing as good as I had hoped anymore. I really like hollow body irons so if I could find something more forgiving in a hollow body iron that would be great.
Open to any and all recommendations other than Ping. Can’t hit Ping irons at all.”
And our members have been sharing their best suggestions in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- AvidSwampThing66: “Another vote for the super forgiving and fast Paradym irons. They look really good for being a GI iron.”
- bobfoster: “I just went from MP20 MMCs to the new 245s in my scoring irons (just played my first round with them today). If you have a chance to try them, you might find them worth a serious look.”
- vman: “Shoot me down, but spend the money on lessons.”
- J_Tizzle: “i525s are great off the heel in my opinion.”

This is the first in Odyssey’s “On the Road” series – next year’s putter theme will be NJ highway Route 46 and sound chamber feedback will feature cars honking during rush hour.

Talks up a special “sound chamber” behind the face then doesn’t show us what it looks like. Nice job.

I still have a checkmate SW that sometimes rotates in the bag. I used to get their heads in components and wish I had stockpiled some.

Beautiful looking putters, that have a real Scotty Cameron look about them and probably for half the price.

They are not half the price, but rather $399.

Junk. Just like the rest of their lineup…
Where are all the Scotty Cameron haters now?? Odyssey puts out a limited edition putter, and all of a sudden everyone is cool with it? It is over priced, ugly, and unoriginal… No thanks.

Your response only proves my point even further… If this were an article about Cameron putters, the haters would be lining up to write a comment about it. I just find it hilarious that since it is an Odyssey putter, everyone is automatically OK with it costing 400 bones… even though it brings nothing special to the table other than the limited quantity available to be purchased.
When was the last time someone trashed a Cameron article, only to be rebutted with “Relax… they’re only putters…”
Yea, that’s what I thought.

Why, Why a insert? You couldn’t go 100% milled carbon steel. For that reason I am out
