10 highlights from the S.I. Anonymous Tour Player Poll

Published

on

Ah, the often controversial, always entertaining Sports Illustrated/Golf.com anonymous player poll is here again. Last year’s edition famously saw Rickie Fowler named the most overrated player on Tour and spurred him on to a steely Players Championship victory.

This year, Sports Illustrated talked to more than 150 players across the PGA, LPGA, and Champions tours to get their perspectives on a bevy of topics of interest. You can read the full poll here, but we’re going to pull our 10 favorite survey questions below.

Will Tiger Woods win another PGA Tour event?

PGA TOUR pros:

Yes 42%
No 27%
Don’t know 31%

Surprised so many of Woods’ peers are keeping the faith? It would have been interesting to see what they said regarding another major victory.

Have you gone on a date with a woman you met at a tournament?

PGA TOUR pros:

No 71%
Yes 29%

Does this refute the idea of PGA Tour groupies or confirm it?

If you were to be in a bar fight, who would you want to have your back?

PGA TOUR pros:

Ernie Els 15%
Keegan Bradley 9%
Angel Cabrera 7%
Pat Perez 5%
Brooks Koepka 4%
No one out here 18%
Others 42%

Looks like the pros value fierce loyalty — ala Keegan Bradley sticking up for his caddie to Miguel Angel Jimenez — more than raw fighting chops, which is probably why Vijay Singh (once an actual bouncer) isn’t on the list…

Do you use social media?

PGA TOUR pros:

Yes 84%
No 16%

This number seems surprisingly high. Would have been interesting to separate the “active” users from the corporate accounts.

If Hillary Clinton could guarantee to cut your taxes in half and the Republican candidate would keep them the same, would you vote for her?

PGA TOUR pros:

No 56%
Yes 33%
Don’t care 11%

The tax issue is big for pros, so it’s clear they really, really don’t like Hillary.

Would you rather win the PGA Championship or an Olympic gold medal?

PGA pros:

PGA 71%
Gold 29%

The Texas Open or a gold medal?

Gold Medal 76%
Texas 24%

Not surprisingly, the pros aren’t obsessed with winning gold, although they do overwhelmingly value it more highly than a win at a regular PGA Tour event.

Would you rather drive it like Dustin Johnson or putt it like Jordan Spieth?

PGA Tour pros:

Putt like Spieth 75%
Drive like Johnson 25%

While they surely have all the data emphasizing the importance of driving and tee-to-green play over putting, it seems Spieth’s clutch putting is a prized commodity.

Are you O.K. with your grandkids (or any kids) seeing so many Viagra and Cialis ads during golf telecasts?

Champions Tour pros:

Yes 53%
No 42%
No comment 5%

Interesting one here, since these guys are the indirect beneficiaries of the ad dollars. (And, of course, a more crude writer might say they are the beneficiaries of more than just ad dollars from the drugs in question).

Suzann Pettersen’s apology was ____?

LPGA pros:

P.R. 53%
Sincere 38%
Both 9%

Interesting to see the prevailing opinion on “Gimmegate.”

Does the caddie deserve 10% of a winner’s check?

PGA TOUR pros:

Yes 67%
No 33%

This is an intriguing one, as fans always stereotypically discredit the role of the caddie and players tend to emphasize it. For the “no” replies, it’d be interesting to hear what they think a more appropriate percentage would be.

I’ll bet most of the “no”s on the caddy question give MORE than 10 percent.

I certainly hope so. They probably should have clarified that in the question.

What GolfWRXers are saying about Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing Kevin Kisner’s new Callaway X Forged CB irons which he has in the bag at this week’s CJ Cup. WRXers have been commenting on the switch and the clubs themselves in our forums.

For lots more photos, check out the full thread here.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • btyh: “Holy offset.”
  • Glf_LU: “These are interesting. Not going to make a rush to judgement until I see them in person. It does look like a little more offset than I would expect to see in this model.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Kisner is not one to make a lot of equipment changes (see the GBB driver he’s still using), so if these do have staying power in his bag that will be interesting to see. I have to wonder if there’s something different about his set, because like others have mentioned there appears to be more offset on his than I recall seeing in the samples I’ve had in hand.”

WATCH: PGA Tour players play hole blindfolded and it’s hilarious/amazing

Published

on

As part of a Srixon campaign, four PGA Tour players recently participated in a three-hole challenge, with each hole being a different game; hole No. 1 was blindfolded, hole No. 2 was costumes and distractions, and hole No. 3 was alternate shot with a baseball bat. The teams were Smylie Kaufman and Sam Ryder against Shane Lowry and Grayson Murray.

Watch the full video below, since it is quite entertaining (albeit not the type of golf that Old Tom Morris surely had in mind), but in particular, make sure to check out the first hole where Lowry and Ryder play a full hole completely blind folded. It’s amazing to watch how badly Ryder struggles, and how Lowry nearly makes par.

Cleveland-Srixon’s marketing department has been hard at work crafting these viral-esque ad campaigns; if you remember, former long-drive champion Jamie Sadlowski recently dressed as 80-year-old Grandpa Jamie to fool range-goers. That video has since gathered over 1.2 million views on YouTube.
