Hot takes on Jason Day’s new putter

TaylorMadeSpiderLimited

We brought you the story of the world No. 1’s new flatstick on our front page.

“Day has used a TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy Spider prototype putter since 2015. He’s a huge fan of the color red, though, and made a special request for a matte red model, which become the “Spider Limited Red.” The particular shade of red employed is inspired by the venomous Redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti), which, like Day, is native to Australia. After the 2016 Masters, where he finished T10, Day put the new putter in play at the RBC Heritage.”

And while there are 11 comments on our front page story, we have more than three pages of chatter related to the putter in the forums. In other words, if you want to see what WRX readers are saying, you have to go beyond the front page.

TP Mills love

Sometimes overshadowed, TP Mills putters are excellent flatsticks with a cult following. It’s only fitting, then, that user UnderPar18 kicked off a thread asking to see the Mills in WRX readers’ arsenals.

The golf course most associated with your state

AugustaNationalMastersLogoFlowers

Fun thread here. AThompson_3 started the discussion with this question: “When people think of golf in your state, what course do they think of?”

He gives the example of Augusta National for Georgia, which most people would readily identify. For the other 49 states, however, there is a healthy debate in most cases.

Bifurcation chatter

USGA_

A topic of discussion since the anchoring ban began being discussed several years ago, really, bifurcation continues to crop up in the forums. ThominOH took kicked off a thread devoted to the idea of a different set of rules for pros and amateurs, before MtlJeff stepped in with this hot take:

“One of the most exaggerated problems IMO. Distance dominates because they set up courses so it can. They could easily tighten fairways and make harsher penalties for missing, but the players complain and they pander to the players so they don’t do it. They played a US open on a 7k course which isn’t crazy long.”

Agree with Jeff? Think we need separate sets of rules?

Forum Thread of the Day: “Your favorite blade irons?”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from moorebaseball, who asks fellow members what their favorite blade irons are. Our members discuss what blades they consider to be best for them, and why, while also contributing plenty of great photos of their prized possessions.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • greenpiece: “MP-14 is my all-time favorite. Great feel, turf interaction, and control.”
  • BMC: “The Callaway 2018 Apex MB feel incredible and are fairly easy to hit. I started playing blades in 1988 – Wilson Staff fluid feel. Those Apexes are sweet.”
  • bodhi555: “I’d say any of the models Nike brought out when they were in the game – the OGs, VR TW or VR Pros. Current favourites are the VR Pros, usual great Nike looks and crisp feel, but the grooves are savage and put unreal amounts of spin on the ball. No harder to hit than a player’s CB either. Only challenge is finding a decent set. It took me 18 months of scouring eBay and Golfbidder to find mine.”
  • bfp9: “My favorites: 2006 Hogan Apex. OG Nike Blades. Taylormade RAC TP MB. Mizuno MP-32. I’ve only hit older blades as you can see. I tried the PXG experiment, and that failed, so I’m sticking to what I know. To me old blades = new blades. Nothing has changed significantly enough to warrant new ones for me, except the grooves wearing thin on my Hogans.”
  • kiwi1982: “MP-69. Traditional, proper weighting, great feel.”

Forum Thread of the Day: “New irons from Mizuno”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day showcases new irons that are on the way from Mizuno. Reportedly two years away from being released, but that hasn’t stopped our members from discussing and speculating on the new irons from the Japanese manufacturers.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • halfsumo: “I told myself no new irons until the new MP line comes out. Chris Voshall on TXG’s youtube said something along the lines that the new irons are “not what you’d typically expect from Mizuno”….”
  • deep18: “The one on the left in the bottom pic kinda looks like a 919 Tour.”
  • BlackM00Nlight: “Bottom picture, iron on the right appears to have a beveled leading edge, CB design, and chrome finish.”

Forum Thread of the Day: “Masters fashion commentary”

Published

on

Today’s Forum Thread of the Day comes from manku who opened the forum for a discussion on the best and worst of fashion exhibited at the 2019 Masters. Our members discuss the good, the bad and the ugly on show at last week’s opening major of the year, with some items, such as Adam Scott’s pleated pants, dividing opinion.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • alecfeltman: ” Adams pants worry me. Go back to the tailored slim version. He was dressing like a king until the masters. Rory looks great. Good fit and style. I’m a fan. I don’t understand the new cotton shirts from Nike. Jason Day on Thursday was odd, Friday he did good. TW – I’m a fan this week. I still don’t get why Patrick Reed is sponsored by Nike? That guy needs to wear some brand like Loudmouth. Koepka loves those crazy hats – I dig it. What is the connection between Nike “Snake Pack” and Augusta? I don’t see it. Can someone explain?”
  • elpadidji: “Went here after I saw Adam Scott, thought he looked super good. Got some Arnold Palmer vibes from him.”
  • hardcalier: “Kind of a bad week for fashion in my opinion. Adam Scott’s pants were super baggy like 3 out of 4 days. Tiger looked like he dusted off his wardrobe from 15 years ago. Fortunately, his game from 15 years ago came with it. Adidas stuff is pretty plain, never looks great but never looks awful either. Jason Day looks a little heavy in plaid. Koepka’s print hats were terrible.”
  • Yanki01: “Adam Scott who usually keeps it simple and clean looked hideous. Same for Jason Day and the yellow pants. Not sure if it was the old school look he was going for, but the AM shoes didn’t flow well. Some classic shoes maybe would have helped with some trimmed pants. Justin Thomas was best dressed and usually always is.”
