Tiger Woods has registered for the U.S. Open

Published

on

Tiger Woods has registered for the June 16-19 U.S. Open at Oakmont, per Alex Miceli of GolfweekMiceli wrote:

“To participate in the 116th edition June 16-19 at Oakmont Country Club, [Woods] needed to register by 5 p.m. Wednesday. Woods registered at 4:33 p.m. April 4,” the U.S. Golf Association said.

Speculation as to Woods’ return date has been carried on in earnest following his appearance at a junior clinic last week in which he was seen comfortably hitting drivers in excess of 300 yards, as well as hitting a variety of shot shapes with the rest of the clubs in his bag with ease.

One would have to imagine that if Woods is going to compete in the season’s second major, he’d like to have at least one start under his belt before that time. With that in mind, it seems likely that Woods will at least play the June 2-5 Memorial Tournament, however, Team Tiger remains mum on any timeline for the star’s return.

Woods hasn’t appeared in a PGA Tour event since last year’s Wyndham Championship, where he finished tied for 10th. The last time Woods pegged it in a U.S. Open at Oakmont, 2007, Woods finished tied for second behind Angel Cabrera.

He’s not going to play, although I wish he would

He needs to shut it down until 2017 or maybe 2018 to make sure his back heals. What is he rank now? 1200th in the world? I liked the guy but his new swing is not good. He needs to go back to Hank. Oakmont is not a good place for a journeyman to make his re-debut.

      Johnny Miller still owns Oakmont.

I would like to see Tiger become successful in tournament golf again. He has three surgeries of recency, and it be a good end of career legacy to retire on. Ben Hogan won almost all of his majors after the car wreck, people still buy his book, Callaway has not done justice to the Hogan or Apex brand. Callaway, find the old forging stamps for the Apex II, rejigger the lofts to match todays specs and find a segment of golfers who have had to go to Mizuno, Miura, Honma.

Ben Hogan could barely walk and he did not complain. He manned up. What he did after that nightmarish accident, no golfer has ever done that.

Hogan was amazing and a gentleman too. If any of his clubs were bad, he destroyed them instead of shipping them.

    Ok odds.
3 to 1 he lets go of a club in his forswing.
1 to 2 he grimaces after every shot that is not perfect.
    7 to 4 he quits
8 to 5 makes the cut
1 to 10000000 he will dominate the TV and the news.

I’ll take it, easiest dollar I’ll ever make.

I am by no means a fan but I hope he can at least make it back and play competitively. I have also heard he may play at the Wells Fargo the first full weekend of May.

His swing still has issues. maybe Butch or Hank can help. Ledbetter could help, he has done wonders for Wie.
Tiger’s body is not healthy enough to play the modern game anymore. The young guys like Spieth, DeChambeau and others are too good.

Good on ya Tiger. I’m not rooting for him to break Jack’s record or to dominate the game of golf again—I’m rooting for him to defy the odds and have one last bite at the apple. I’m rooting for him to fall in love with the game of golf again.

ICYWW: Although Woods registered more than 20 days ago, that information only just became available to the media, hence Miceli’s report.

Actually, on the USGA website you can lookup “entrant”. Someone did a couple of weeks ago and posted a pic on Twitter.

GolfWRX is on site this week at the Valero Texas Open.

The event has been around since 1922, making it one of the oldest on the PGA Tour calendar. Over the years, it’s been held at a variety of courses across the Lone Star State, but it’s found its home at TPC San Antonio in recent years. Some of the biggest names in golf have taken home the title here, including Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Ben Crenshaw.

GolfWRX has its usual assortment of general galleries, WITBs and special pull-out albums. As always, we’ll continue to update the links below as more photos come in from TPC San Antonio.
